Getting back into the church, I hid the weapons I'd stolen in case someone asked me why I had them, this mission was better to do alone the more people, the more the risk, especially since Angelus had trust issues, I worked better alone anyway; it was more fun that way. I also hid the weapons so that others wouldn't steal them, sure we were on the same team but most of us were criminals in the first place. I placed the weapons in a box under my bed and lock it with a pad lock and key as well as a combination lock.
I then went to talk to one of the higher ups about the conversation I'd overheard. I went up to the top floor of the church and got to a large door. Taking a deep breath I knocked on it.
"Come in," I heard the deep voice call from inside.
Good, he's in, I though and I opened the door revealing a man in his mid to late thirties with longish jet black hair and several scars on his face and arms and an eye-patch over his left eye. He sat looking over papers with a frown making him look rather scary, of course I knew he was really a big softy but it was still intimidating. His huge muscular body was clothed simply.
I smiled at him and walked toward him, "You, know, Edwin, if you frown like that all the time you'll get winkles!" I teased.
"Like I'm really worried about that, sit down, you cheeky little shit," he said gesturing to the chair in front of the desk. I did as I was told and sat with a thud on the leather seat and stretched out my arms, then I put my hands behind my head and leaning back as I kicked out my legs. "What can I do for you, Kin?" Edwin asked looking up at me, his brown eye started intensely. I'd known him for a while, I met him when I was twelve, he was the first person to catch me stealing important stuff. We kind of had an odd friendship after that despite me having broken into his house to steal money. Back then he had been a handsome man who was devoted to taking care of his sick mother and little siblings but during the attack his family was killed, he was badly hurt and just managed to escape and was now desperate for vengeance. He was now one of the rebel's top generals.
"I was at the soldier's HQ," I told him, he frowned disapprovingly at me, he didn't like me going into dangerous places without orders and a team but he was used to it by now. Still I was aware that I'd be punished for this, I'd probably have to clean the whole church. However, he said nothing and let me continue, "I overheard a very interesting conversation."
"Oh?" Edwin raised his eyebrows showing his interest.
"Yeah, Some purple haired chick called Cynthia. She was speaking to some old dude about getting more soldiers."
"Yes, Kin this isn't that interesting we know that they're growing their army so it's not all that surprising." Edwin said with a sigh.
"Hey, let me finish!" I whined before continuing, "Cynthia had a dragon so she must be the famous dragon rider we've heard so much about but that's not all!"
"Well? Kin, stop with the suspense and tell me!"
"God, so impatient!"
"KIN! I am very busy, hurry up!"
"Okay, okay!" I laughed; it was fun to tease Edwin. "It seems as though some noble boy got away and it seems he could be a important player that could mean victory for whoever finds him first."
Edwin's eyes widened, "really? This is huge! What's the name of this boy?" he asked with excitement.
"I don't know all they said was 'Lady Ara's son' I don't know who that is but maybe you do? You're mother used to be a maid in the castle right? Did she ever mention a Lady Ara?"
At this Edwin slumped down as if in disappointment. I titled my head to the side in question. "Forget you heard that, Kin," he told me.
I was shocked; why would I need to forget that? This was important right? We couldn't afford to ignore it. "Why!?" I asked.
Edwin looked at me and hesitated. "It's dangerous for a number of reasons... Lady Ara was... wild. Her child... well it's complicated. You shouldn't tell anyone about what you heard, you could get yourself and anyone you've told killed..."
I was confused and I wanted to know more. Edwin had always been honest with me and he was clearly hiding something from me and I wanted to know what. "I don't get it, Edwin! Do you know him? Why aren't you telling me anything?"
Edwin was silent again, he sighted a spoke slowly, carefully "he's... dangerous... Kin please just forget it! It has to do with politics and you don't really understand that. I'll deal with this matter you just keep away." I was about to complain but Edwin changed the subject "Kin, I would like to ask something of you."
"What?" I huffed I was not really happy that Edwin was treating me like a child who knew nothing.
"There's a general going to be coming here from the east to give a report, I would like you to go and assassinate him, you'll leave in about a week."
This changed my mood fast, this was perfect! I was heading east in a week anyway and this would give me the perfect excuse to do so. "I'll do it!" I said happily "but only if it's a solo mission."
Edwin looked ready to argue but gave up. "Fine, if you must, just be careful! No, and I mean no, unnecessary risks. Got it?"
"Yeah, yeah give me the file!" I stretched out my right arm, my hand facing upwards and made a grabby motion with my fingers. Edwin sighed and placed the files into my hand and I stood with a jump and happily skipped out.
