As Mr. and Mrs. Miller lay in bed watching Colbert together, Mr. Miller fell asleep.
Lisa wrote:
Turn on the light.
Looking through her binoculars to a second story window flickering with tv light, Lisa sees it become illuminated by a light bulb switched on.
Lisa counted out twenty seconds before writing:
I have put your husband in a coma.
If you want him returned, you will do exactly as I say.
Turn off the light.
Lisa watched the window through the binoculars and counted. The light went off at 82 seconds.
Lisa tried to imagine what took so long for Beth-ann's mother to do so. Had she been incredulous, thinking her husband was pulling a prank? Did she physically attempt to wake him? Maybe she used her medical knowledge to confirm he was comatose?
You will use your position at LabCorp to acquire blood samples.
To do this, you will write the name of a person on a piece of paper and place a drop of their blood beside their name.
I will expect a hundred samples each week.
Of highest priority are the blood of foreign origin and VIPs.
I will contact you, via your husband, next week at this time to tell you where to deliver the samples.
If you agree to these conditions, turn on the light.
The window lit up.
Lisa could see Mrs. Miller peering through her blinds. Searching.
Lisa switched off the reading light on the Coma Keeper and pulled Beth-ann and Mr. Miller's pages.
