Kin's P.O.V
I was on my way to see Angelus again. This was now the last day before I leave for his village. I had collected everything I needed over the last few days and I had gone to see him every night.
We hadn't done anything other than talk. We couldn't, not when he was sick and in the position he was in but I loved just talking to him and telling him about the Rebellion. Although there was a lot of long silences, Angelus had no energy, his sickness didn't seem to be recovering very quickly. However he was getting better slowly I could tell that much. A little more colour on his face, less coughing, little things seemed to be slowly fading away in the few days I spent with him.
I knew he would be 'healthy' by his birthday and that was a problem the healthier he was the rougher Yokai would be with him not like I was going to let that happen but it was always in the back of my mind. What would happen should I fail? Never have I wanted to succeed more than I do now.
I came in using the same way I had used before. He was sitting cross legged in the main room with a book in his hands but his head snapped up as soon as he heard the door creak open. This was the first time that he was here when I came in other than our first meeting, hopefully this meant he was feeling better. I shut the door behind me and walked towards him.
"Hey, are you feeling any better?" I asked softly.
He nodded in response. "A bit, my body still hurts and I still can't fly yet." He looked so miserable and I walked towards him and sat down next to him.
"You'll be out of here soon I have everything I need and I'll leave tomorrow night."
"Good," Angelus said as he closed his book and put it to the side. There was a long silence before he spoke again this time so quietly. "You'll be safe right?"
I gave a small laugh. "Of course I will, you don't need to worry about me just worry about yourself."
"But still! Don't do anything that'll put you at risk"
"It's nice to know you care but this whole thing is a risk, it doesn't bother me. It's fun. But I promise I will come back."
"You better."
"I will if I don't then who'll save you?" I smiled, then realised my boast wasn't much of a boast and probably make things feel more hopeless for Angelus. "I-I didn't mean it like that!" I protested upon seeing his face looking horrified. "I just meant that I'll come back and I'll be the one to save you and-"
He cut me off with a small laugh. "It's okay, Kin. You don't need to get so flustered."
I pouted. "Who's flustered?"
"You are. You've gone all red!" He laughed again, "and you're always telling me how I'm cute! Look at you Mr Fluster!"
I looked at him for a second he was really starting to open up a lot and decided to join in and tease him back. "I don't know if that's a complement or not but I'll take it as one. However you are way cuter."
"Am not!" he insisted.
"You are too!" I stuck my tongue out at him and he rolled his eyes at me and playfully hit me on the back of the head.
He laughed and then sighed. "You are so childish."
"Yeah people tell me that all the time but I don't think it's really a bad thing."
"Well... you are fun to be around I suppose but I worry you'll do something stupid."
"Don't. I may be childish but I do take things seriously."
"I know."
He lent into me resting his head on my shoulder and I sighed, carefully putting my arm around him.
"Do you have a plan?" He asked me.
"Not really..." I admitted, truthfully. There was no point in lying to him about this. If I told him I did he'd ask about it.
"That's not good you should have some sort for plan if you go in without thinking-"
"Yeah,yeah I know I could die," I interrupted. "I don't need a lecture, you sound like Edwin."
"Who's that?" he asked me. I had forgotten that he didn't know Edwin.
"Just a guy I know. He's my boss even though he's more like a big brother to me or well maybe father figure, he's kinda old. Anyway it's not like I'd tell him that. He likes to lecture me about everything."
"Maybe you should listen to him."
I laughed "He'd like you. Don't worry I can't plan much anyway, not without knowing the numbers of soldiers or positions or anything. I'll be fine I'm good at being sneaky."
Angelus just hummed seemingly giving up on constantly lecturing me. However all night he was admitting all his worries to me. I couldn't blame him for it and I listened to him. He was seeming to list every single thing that could possibly go wrong. I decided that it would be best to remember it all in case something he said could save my life in the event for one of these things happening. Angelus seemed to have a solution for everything, he certainly was smart. Not like that was surprising when he saw the future all the time, he was bound to pick up things like that.
I stayed with Angelus until he fell asleep. We didn't say goodbye or anything which I was glad about; I hated saying goodbye and I knew that if we did he'd probably cry. I left silently and looked back at the castle one last time before I ran off. I was worried about Angelus, I could only hope that while I was away Yokai didn't hurt him...
I awoke in the middle of the afternoon the next day. I dragged myself out of bed feeling well rested which was good since I was going to be travailing of the next couple of weeks. I stretched and yawned before pulling on my clothes and walked into the mess hall.
I looked around and saw my friends sitting in the back one of them saw me and waved. I waved back and walked over to sit with them.
"You slept in." One of them said. I only nodded in response.
"I heard Edwin's sending you to take out that dude. The hairy one!"
I laughed, "Yeah I'll be leaving tonight," I told them. I still couldn't believe my luck that I had gotten that mission it gave me the perfect cover. Though I was beginning to think maybe it might be best to have help with this...
Ha! Who am I kidding!? This is way too much fun, people would just ruin it.
I ate with my friends as we spoke about the recent gossip once I was done I ditched them and went to do one last check of my equipment. I'd hidden all of it under my bed in the locked case.
However once I got there Edwin was sitting on my bed, he was obviously waiting on me. No doubt it was for some dumb-ass pep talk and a speech on my safety. I rolled my eyes and sat next to him.
"What's up?" I spoke causally.
He looked at me and sighed. "I know that no matter what I tell you, Kin, you'll still just do as you please but I mean it when I say I want you back in a few days. Unharmed."
I felt a little bad, I knew I was going to be gone longer than a few days and that I was going to worry Edwin but he'll be fine. He should be used to it by now. "Yeah, yeah. I'll be fine. I always am."
"You can't really guaranty that. Who knows what'll happen in a fight."
"I know. It's me though, Edwin, I won't get hurt or die and if I do you guys can easily replace me. I'm just a thief, there are loads of thieves."
"That may be true but we don't want any loss we need all the people we can get. Plus I'm quite fond of you despite how dumb you are."
"I'm not that dumb!" I said, offended.
Edwin just laughed at me. "Seriously, Kin. You are important. I need you to come back," he fondly patted me on the back.
I sighed. Sometimes I do wonder why Edwin acts so protective of me. I know he acts brotherly to everyone because that's how he was raised with all the little siblings he had but still he seemed to protect me above the rest of his friends. Maybe I was just delusional.
"Anyway, that's not the only reason I came to talk to you." Edwin continued, "I have something for you."
Edwin bent down and took a box from under my bed. I'd never seen it before. It wasn't very fancy just a plain, brown, wooden box about the size of my forearm. Edwin handed it to me, I looked at him curiously before taking off the lid. Inside was a dagger; the silver blade looked new and was spotless, the handle was wrapped in brown leather and on top of the hilt was a shiny gold stone. The stone was like nothing I'd ever seen, it was glittery, and oddly shaped, it wasn't rough like I expected, it was smooth, like a gem. This certainly wasn't a normal dagger. I carefully took it out, holding it blade down and turned it in my hand, looking closely there looked like there was something engraved on the blade in small writing. However it was in a language I'd never seen before, I didn't even know the letters but it was definitely writing not a pattern.
"It's cool," I said quietly, still admiring it.
Edwin grinned at me. "I'm glad that you like it."
I nodded in response. "But where did you get it?" I asked. This wasn't something you could just buy, I'd never seen anything like it.
"I found it," he told me, "in the rubble of my old home. I think it must have been a gift my Mother received from some noble that she worked under."
My jaw dropped. "Should you really be giving this to me?" I asked. "If it was your Mother's shouldn't you keep it?"
"Nah, I'd rather it was used and I prefer to use axes. I'm not so good with things as precise as daggers plus I trust you." He said as he scratched the back of his head.
I was going to argue but then he was so stubborn I knew it was useless. "Thank you, Edwin. I'll be careful with it."
He nodded and stood, "Well that was all, I'll let you get ready now. But Kin you've been acting more mysterious as of late. I hope you're not doing anything dangerous. I want you to be careful." He walked away lifting his hand and waving without looking back at me.
I shook my head. I didn't really want to worry him but I had no choice. It was better to try not to think about it and get on with what I had to do, so I put my new dagger away and began to check over my things; two swords, ten throwing knifes, one short spear and a bow with a few arrows. Good I have all my weapons. I also had my leather armour I'd wear under my clothes and some blankets and dried foods. As well as a big bag of money. Stealing all this had taken a while since I had also gotten caught a few times and had to leave the loot in order to get away but everything was now ready. Angelus, I'm coming.
