The city bus came to a screeching stop.
“Ridgewood University!” The bus driver said over the speaker. I got up and began collecting my things, along with my suitcase.
I walked along the entrance pathway, taking note of the rose bushes on the sides.
I stopped and looked up at the large brick building in front of me. It honestly looked like an asylum building, but a lot friendlier.
They say that this is one of the best colleges in the country, so it’s a no-brainer that I'd end up here eventually. Like the other Corazons before me.
Of course, I majored in dance, with my main focus being on ballet. Of course, my parents had to control that too. Only this time, they had even less of an eye on me.

7:45 pm
My dorm was quiet, and very homey. I enjoyed the silence, I was used to it from so much of it back home.
I figured tonight I would stay in. Read. Study.
There was a knock on my door.
I opened it to see my friend, Lucinda.
“Hey Lucinda…” I said, greeting her. She seemed excited as she told me about her day.
“You will not believe who invited me to a party tonight!” She started, walking past me. “Elijah?” I asked, since she seemed smitten with the man earlier. “No, Tim did!” She said, a smirk growing on her face.
“Who?” I asked, confused.
“Sweatpants Tim!” She said, moving her hands apart in a suggestive manner. “Oh.” I quietly said, blushing. “Well, you have a wonderful time! I need to study tonight...” I said, going back to my book.
“Oh come on Mary! All you've been doing in this dorm is studying! There’s gonna be drinks, food and plenty of hunky guys there!” Lucinda said. “My mother always told me…tis’ better to be a smart girl than a drunk harlot.” I responded.
“Was this before or after she put an aspirin between your knees? You’re nineteen and in college. You can make your own decisions now.” Lucinda said.
That part got to me. She was right. It’s not like my parents are gonna care if I don't study for one night.
I took one more moment to think and….
“Let’s party!” I said.

9:45 pm
Me and Lucinda made ourselves up, put on some cute dresses and went to Tim’s frat house.
“Are you sure about this outfit?” I asked. “Yeah, you look great!” Lucinda said. The blue party dress did nothing to hide the short woman’s curves. Her short and soft dark toxic green locks were purposely curled out of her face, bringing more attention to her dark almond shaped eyes. The fall air nipped at our skin as we walked up to the porch. Lucinda knocked twice, and a frat member opened the door.
Walking into that party was like discovering another dimension….
There were two young men on the couch smoking mary jane, while another person next to them was high on lsd.
Walking past a slightly open bedroom door, I caught a glimpse of two shirtless lesbians kissing. I immediately turned away, blushing.
“Mary, what’s wrong?” Lucinda asked, nudging my shoulder.
“Nothing!” I said, slipping out a nervous laugh.
Lucinda smiled at me as she turned away, like she was looking for something.
“Girl, there he is!” Lucinda said, nodding over to her target. On the other side of the large living room, there was Tim. He had a drink in his hand, talking to a friend.
Lucinda was shifting away from me over to him, leaving me alone in the crowd.
“Wait! Lucinda!” I tried calling out to her, my cries drowned out by the loud music.
Suddenly, I felt as if all my senses had been raised. The music felt louder, the smell of the weed’s smoke was stronger. I felt the eyes in the room stabbing into me like daggers.
The sexual energy and drugs around me felt overwhelming.
I looked over at a metal bucket filled with ice and alcoholic drinks.
Alcohol.
Maybe alcohol will take my mind off of everything.
I've never really drank more than a glass of champagne on new years, so this was a new experience for me. I was also nineteen….this was technically illegal as well.
My first crime. I mean….no one was gonna know, right?
I grabbed a colorful looking can out of the ice bucket, opening it. It tasted like….strawberries. The sharp, swinging taste of the alcohol came after for a nice finish. I...liked it.
I drank more, trying to forget about the other people there.
Of course, over time, I started to feel confident. More sure of myself. The shit wasn't called “Liquid Courage” for nothing. I lost myself in the activities of the night, dancing to the music, even doing the limbo.
Everyone enjoyed my presence. Especially the guys there. The way they….stared at me. They looked at me like a lion looks at a zebra. Ready to pounce.
I moved away from them, finally finding Lucinda next to Tim.
Tim had his arm around her, talking to her.
I sat next to Tim, since there was nowhere else on the couch to sit.
“Well who’s this?” Tim asked, turning to me. “That’s my friend, Mary.” Lucinda said.
“Heyyyyy…..” I slurred out, brainwashed by the alcohol. “She sure is cute….” Tim said, shifting his arm off of Lucinda. She had a confused look on her face.
“Your….pretty cute too sir…” I said.
I don't think it was the alcohol speaking for me, I genuinely found him attractive. His dark red stubble framed his sharp jawline well. He had really alluring hazel eyes and long eyelashes. He seemed to be a jock, as his muscular body was towering over me.
“I’d love to take you to my bedroom and play with you but you're too drunk…” He said, stroking my cheek.
I glanced over to see Lucinda very upset. Almost….angry.
The alcohol made me not care.
“Aw c'mon…. You know you want to….” I said, shifting my body over his lap. He seemed to like that, moving my body into his lap, spreading his legs. “Nah...not tonight. You're cute though...I’ll definitely need your number…” Tim said.
“Mmm….okayyyyy…” I said, not exactly knowing what I was getting myself into.
Lucinda eventually moved off the couch, and angrily went into the bathroom.
Tim scoffed at her and looked back up at me.
I laid my head on his chest….
The music was silencing, the smoke was dissipating….
Everything started to blur and slow down…..
Sleep? Was this sleep?
Yes...I was falling asleep.
Little did i know, the end of that night started everything.
