The history teacher kept going on about how ‘our great nation’ came about, but all I could keep my attention on was how Eli had been looking worse and worse by the minute. He was now sweaty, hand pressed against his temple as he lowered his head, eyes closed. I hadn’t realised anything was wrong with him until I saw him sway in his seat momentarily, as if he was on the verge of fainting. I tried to get his attention but it took a few minutes before he looked up from his desk and glanced to the side where I was sitting at the desk next to his. I mimed ‘are you ok?’ which he simply waved off, a general sign of ‘I’m fine’ which promptly made him grab for his head once again. Wincing in pain as he closed his eyes and leaned down towards the desk once more. I decided, ‘screw it’, and raised my hand in the air.
- Yes Mr. Nightfall?
- I think Eli isn’t feeling well, can I just help him to the nurses office?
- Oh! Of course.
I quickly helped him up from his seat, the classroom silent around us as I let one of my arms wrap around his waist, his own around my neck, before walking us both outside and across to the other campus building where the nurses office was located. He grumbled as we walked but couldn’t manage to actually speak. He seemed exhausted and barely able to stand on his own. The moment we walked in, a nurse quickly helped Eli to sit down, gave him a glass of water and some painkillers. He took them without protesting whilst I sat back against a chair by the bed he’d been put on, observing everything quietly. I didn’t want to impose on his private life or issues, and decided to just make sure he was feeling better before leaving. Once the nurse walked off, I cleared my throat to get Eli’s attention.
- You ok?
- Yeah. I’m feeling better already so you don’t have to stay.
- Ok. You want me to call one of your friends or like Simon?
- Oh, uh yeah no I’ll manage that myself but thanks for helping me.
- Oh. That’s uh... Ok? As long as you’re feeling better.
He simply nodded as a response, before laying back on the bed, closing his eyes to rest some more. I decided to head out and call Simon to let them all know about what happened.
- Hi sup?
- Uh. Hi, I just wanted to let you and Eli’s friends know that Eli wasn’t feeling well during history and I took him to the nurses office. He’s resting there now but I thought I might as well tell you guys?
- Oh, is he ok? Yeah, I’ll talk to the others when I get back.
- You’re not with them?
- No I... I’m with Caspar.
- Oh. You guys ok?
- Yeah. We’ve talked things out, we’re doing... better now.
- Good. Good. I’ve missed you around Simon. Even if it’s been barely two days.
- I know. Me too. Missed both of you.
- Well I’ll let you two be, but let’s all hang out soon?
- Yeah! Of course, see ya baby alpha.
- See you.
I couldn’t help but get a bit worried. Simon had seemed slightly off when answering, making me wonder what had really happened with this ‘talk’ between Caspar and him. I should probably check up on Caspar as soon as possible. With that in mind I began walking back to class, trying not to think too hard about what could possibly be wrong with Eli.
