The pair weave through the chaos and slip through one of the many holes in the walls made by the attack. Slipping through the night and running to safety, Six stops and looks back, “wait! What about Lea?”
Jack turns back and grabs his shirt by the shoulder and pushes him to continue. “They tortured her. She changed. There’s no going back now.” as they slip into the night, “we need to get to the bus. I believe I know what could’ve happened to us.”
__Back at the encampment__
Lea stands on an overturned crate and simply yells, “stop!”
Silence falls like snow on a winter night. Frozen in place, every zombie stalls.
A masked figure walks up to her as she hops down. “Was it really a good idea to let them go?” Lea questions.
“As you said, the one who is responsible for your change and for the power you gained, is very untrusting. As they say, better the carrot than the rod.” he walks in front of her and places a hand on her shoulder. “You did well and if you continue to do so, I will reward you greatly. So, do not fail me.”
__High up on Gulfcrest Cliff__
The sun begins to peak over the horizon as Jack and Six reach the overturned bus. “So are you gonna tell me who we came up here to contact? We walked for hours and you refused to say until ‘we get to the safety of the bus’.”
“I probably would have told you sooner but you acted like a child on a road trip and kept asking. Anyway, it’s that quack doctor we ran into. The one who swore she had all the answers. Promised that the cure to all that ails mankind is in the Zombies. Well, we ate her food and drank her drinks before we realized she was nuts but she might have served us more than what we thought.”
“So, what. You think she used us as lab rats?”
“It is the best I got. It’s worth trying anyway.” Jack says as he pulls the cb radio out and checks for power. A hissing electrical sound kicks on as life is restored to the device. “Thank you Quinn. Now, what channel was she on.”
He begins flipping through the channels he can remember until Six chimes in, “it’s a hundred and twelve.”
“Thank you.” he flips to the correct channel and finds a conversation between the doc and an Alaskan resident. “Doc Redden. This is Jack, you hosted a nice lunch for myself and my friends when we passed by your clinic on our way to Alaska.”
Static and flickers will the speakers until, “Jack! It is wonderful to hear from you but I am in the middle of discussing my housing deal for anchorage. Would it be alright with you if we continued this in roughly an hour or so?”
“Wait! You’re in Alaska?”
“Yes I am. You spoke so highly of it and I thought about visiting you all up here so I packed up my things and high tailed it north. Lets continue this in a bit, yes?”
“Yes ma’am, I can wait. Talk soon.” with a faint sizzle, the machine powers down as he flips the power switch. “You might as well get some rest, Six. I’ll fill you in when you get up.”
“Good idea Jack.” Six says as he stumbles to the back of the bus and pulls a cot out from a storage bin on its side.
“It’s a little weird that she’s already here, right? You might be right on your theory.” Six says as he unfolds the bed. “So, you aren’t gonna eat me the second I fall asleep, right?” he says with a half joking tone.
“Too skinny for me.” flipping him off and dismissing his comment as he focuses on what to ask the doc.
Situating it in the most comfortable way Six can and falling asleep in just moments as the world and all its incoming problems fade away.
