Chapter 14: Desire
Silas washed Kalias's blood from his hands, arms, and face. Silas made the necessary preparations for tomorrow and headed toward his room.
Before Silas entered, he glanced at Marcus and Klive. "Oh, and one more thing, before I go. Marcus and Klive, on numerous occasions, you have proven your unwavering loyalty to me, which is why tomorrow, I am entrusting each of you with a very important task."
Shortly after Silas said those words, Marcus held his hand over his chest while kneeling before Silas and replied, "Yes, my lord, all you have to do is say the word, and I will do anything you ask of me without question."
Klive displayed the exact same gesture as Marcus, stating, "There's nothing I would rather do more than serve you, my lord."
Silas was quite pleased to hear and bear witness to such unshakeable commitment before him.
Silas turned toward Marcus first and said, "Calista is one of the most precious things in this world to me, which is why I want you to bring her back here safely."
"There's a war approaching, and I don't want her to be in the middle of it. I highly doubt she made it far from here anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle for someone of your caliber," Silas said.
"You can count on me, my lord; I will not fail you," Marcus said confidently.
Silas then glanced at Klive and said, "Klive, I want you to fight alongside me tomorrow. Your element of surprise and combat skills are exceptional, which is why you will be a valuable asset."
"It would be my pleasure," Klive replied calmly, nodding as he stared back at Silas with a mischievous grin.
Before walking away, Silas raised his hand to dismiss them for the night. "That will be all. Rest up; we've got a big day ahead of us tomorrow."
As soon as Silas approached his bedroom, he rested his head against the door while looking downward at the floor. He was preoccupied with his thoughts as the events from earlier replayed in his mind.
The moment when Kalias stared back at him, dead in the eye, while having the audacity to lie right to his face, still burned in Silas's mind.
"I know what I saw that day and that nothing that came out of your mouth was true," Silas muttered under his breath since he knew Kalias was being dishonest.
A sorcerer or sorceress couldn't shapeshift into a god or goddess since there wasn't a spell capable of disguising themselves as such. Furthermore, the divine beings that existed in the world could not take the form of one another.
The more the seconds passed, the angrier Silas grew. Negative thoughts continued to swarm around in his head, causing him to clench his fist.
Even until the very end, the damned bastard refused to admit the truth of what he had done. He didn't even have the decency to take the blame for anything to avoid tarnishing his supposed good name, Silas angrily thought to himself.
Damn you, Kalias! Silas screamed in his mind while gritting his teeth and slamming his fist onto the door of his bedroom.
You've managed to take everything from me. You assassinated our father and turned my little brother against me. Even worse, you caused the love of my life to flee and likely think the worst of me from having her mind filled with nothing but nonsense about me, Silas shouted in his head.
Silas let out a loud, frustrated sigh. It would never have come to this if it weren't for your existence, Kailas. After mentally acknowledging this fact, he turned the doorknob to his bedroom.
As soon as Silas walked inside, he could feel the presence of someone's eyes fixated on him. He made his way through the darkness and sat on the edge of his lavish bed.
"Desiree, what are you doing here? I know you're there; I can feel the intensity of your gaze. What brings you here so late? What is it that you want?" Silas coldly replied before sighing in annoyance.
As soon as he reached over to turn on the lamp on the nightstand next to his bed, a seductive female voice came from the corner of his room.
Silas crossed his arms before turning to look at the attractive goddess who stood before him with wavy raven hair cascading down her back. Her alluring amber eyes gazed back into his own, looking like she was the predator and he was the prey she wanted to devour.
"Oh, come on, don't be like that. Is that really how you're going to treat me when I've been waiting all this time for you? You should know by now better than anyone that I tend to get restless when I'm kept waiting," she said in a voice as soft as velvet.
Desiree gracefully walked toward Silas while swaying her hips sexily. Her slender form was accentuated by a tight, long, black dress with thin spaghetti straps. The dress had a slit at the bottom right, revealing much of her toned leg. She also was wearing black heels to complement the look.
"Why do you look so disappointed? Surely, you must have known something like this was going to happen," Desiree mentioned before crawling onto the bed toward him. She extended her hand to gently caress his cheek while he leaned his face into her hand.
"Because my brother poisoned Calista's mind with who knows what," Silas mumbled before his blue eyes looked up at her.
"It's sad to watch you suffer so much when you care so much about her," Desiree said before she cupped his face and leaned in close. The strong, intoxicating scent of her floral perfume filled his nostrils.
"You know I could take your mind off of her~" Desiree whispered closely near his ear, causing his skin to tingle from the warmth of her breath while she smiled. She then traced her index finger against his chest before slipping down one of the straps of her dress.
Uninterested, Silas turned his head away from her. He replied emotionlessly, "As I've told you countless times, we'll be nothing more than accomplices. I do not have any romantic feelings toward you."
Hearing Silas's cold response caused Desiree's lips to form into a large frown. Her eyes narrowed, and she crossed her arms. "Psh, I can't believe this. You still refuse me even after all this time and everything we've been through."
"I even helped you get the revenge you so desperately longed for, and this is how you repay me? I don't see what's so special about her anyway and why you continue obsessing over her. She's not even aware of how you really feel," Desiree hissed.
Desiree took a small pause before smiling sarcastically. "Why would you want her when you can have me right now~. Why do you continue fighting it?"
"Whether you'd like to admit it or not, you and I are the same. The sad part about it is that your love for her is one-sided. She'll never feel the same way you feel toward her. You'll always be nothing more than a good friend to her," Desiree said.
Silas sarcastically laughed when she said those words while his eyes and face were turned away from her. He replied, "You're acting like you know her better than I do. Are you done talking yet? I think we're done here; you can show yourself out."
Desiree brushed off everything he said in response while a mischievous smirk crossed her lips. "Fine, if that's how you want to be, you can continue telling yourself that she loves you romantically, but don't say I didn't warn you."
"Prepare to be disappointed, Silas. You'll learn the hard way. And when you do, you'll come crawling to me, and then you'll have to show me just how sorry you are. But for now, I'll show myself out," Desiree replied.
Before getting up from his bed to leave, Desiree glanced over her shoulder at him one more time. "Oh, and I left another vial of my blood for you. Make sure you drink up because, trust me, you're going to need every last drop to prepare you for the adversaries that are going to be coming your way."
"Besides, you'll feel so much better after drinking it. It'll help you see things much more clearly. Goodnight, Silas, until next time we meet~," she said before snapping her fingers and disappearing into the shadows before his very eyes.
Silas glanced down at the vial Desiree had placed next to him on the bed filled to the brim with a black, sludgelike substance. Without giving it a second thought, Silas popped open the vial and began guzzling it down in a single shot. Afterward, he wiped his mouth clean with the back of his hand.
Desiree was right that drinking her blood always made him feel stronger and helped drown out his sorrows. Plus, he needed to prepare himself for the inevitable fact that the gods and goddesses would be coming after him and all of humanity.
Silas then laid down on his bed before reaching his arm over to turn off his lamp's light. He then slowly closed his eyelids, letting the sleepiness consume him as he began reminiscing about simpler times in his past.
