Jade's life is comfortable. Uncomplicated. He's found his place among Empire nobility, and as the owner of a trusted medical practice, he has a stable income, a well-lit apartment, access to restricted libraries hiding centuries of research.
If there's something missing, it's nothing he can't read about in a book.
There's no reason to risk losing any of it, no reason to follow the strange tug of longing in his heart towards something he can't even define. No reason at all to abandon everything he knows to follow the trail in the sky it seems only he can see.
And if the flicker of his own magic wanes with every passing day, it certainly can't be helped. Not even by the stranger who arrives on his doorstep and beckons with promises of dreams Jade had long since buried and forgotten.
