Sally Brown woke up feeling well rested that morning, she had been preparing for that day for a long while as it would be her first day on the job. It was her first real gig, of course she had landed some part time jobs before, but this was something that she appreciated doing. Three months had been passed since she had graduated from her nursery course and all the expectations had been crushed in a sea of rejections at interviews, often being blamed on her own inexperience, the vicious circle of unemployment.
However, her mother worked up a few connections to get her a nurse job at a friend’s clinic, where she would be working directly under the guidance of a plastic surgeon, it wasn’t her preferred area, as she never fancied beauty very much, but it would probably grant her the experience needed for a future position.
Her routine consisted first in checking for messages of her boyfriend, who often worked at odd hours as he was a private investigator. A dreamer, she thought, running after his dream of being a real life Poe character. He was very responsible, though, and his messages often kept her running in early mornings.
With a heart filled with anxiety and excitement she rode downtown, leaving the comfort of her home to meet the people shehoped to see every day for the next few years of her life. The clinic was located at a commercial building, which had been shaped in a T form, with two spacious parking lots.
She walked from the parking lot towards the inside of the building, it was still early and many of the workers hadn’t arrived yet. Sally took out a card from her pocket which read the room she’d been working in, 369. Should the ‘3’ mean the floor she’d been nursing in, that would a good sign, as she didn’t like heights very much. Apparently, the building had some bureaucracy, which prevented her from accessing the upper floors without putting her name in a system. After spending quite a while in a line to get her a visitor card, she made her way towards the room, the three floors seemed like 300 as her anxiety made time pass very slowly.
She knocked a few times on the door of the clinic, only to notice that there was a doorbell by her right side. Containing the awkwardness of her first moments at work, she reached for the doorbell as a woman opened the door for her.
This woman struck a chord in Sally immediately, her skin seemed to be extremely overstretched, while her lips pouted out, cherry red, yet she still used quite a lot of makeup. A blue card fixed on over her left side, maybe too close to her shoulder, revealed her to be called “Diane”.“Are you here to see Dr. Roseberry?” She asked, her voice seemed hoarse and tired, from what Sally gathered.
“I am the new nurse, is Dr. Roseberry a plastic surgeon?”
“By all means come in! We really need your help around here.” Diane flashed a smile that seemed as unnatural as her and opened the door for girl.
The inside of the clinic was filled with pictures of models that had probably undergone one or two operations there. Sally also noticed some oil paintings that could have been taken out of a regency period romance book. Like most hospitals, it smelled of alcohol and pain.
Sally found herself in a cold chair in front of a middle aged man. There wasn’t much special about him, the sides of his dark hair were starting to grey out, but probably he had been painting it black for a long time now. His face was rather square and he smiled easily as she had came into the room, unlike Diane he didn’t seem to be artificial and had a well mannered attitude about himself.
“So, Miss Brown, I’m your first?”
“I guess you could say so, doctor.” The girl smirked and crossed a leg, Dr. Roseberry’s room wasn’t filled with decoration either, it was rather plain and professional.
“And I see you have graduated recently, that’s good, and those textbooks must still be fresh in your mind. Has someone handed you our guides and procedures, yet?”
“Not yet, doctor, but considering our line of work, I have a general idea of what it’s expected of me.”
“Then I think we’ve struck gold in finding you, either way, I will ask Diane to hand you the procedures and by afternoon we will have a minor operation that I’d like you to assist me with, okay?”
“Sure, doctor.” Sally nodded quickly as she replied to the doctor, just being there at this room made she feel nervous.
“See you after lunch, young miss. Have fun studying.” Dr. Roseberry extended his hand and greeted her as she stood up, his hand felt cold, but she could notice he also seemed to be a bit nervous.
Diane quickly assembled the procedure routine forms for her, handing them, loose pages and a clip to hold them all together, and gave them to Sally. She was also offered a room that seemed like a small library, many books on anatomy, biology and even some medical models could be seen there. Sally was content with the ease of mind on her first day.
