Carrying her heavy luggage, Evelyn stepped down from the airplane to America. As heavy as her luggage was half her weight, Evelyn couldn't wait to get to her new apartment and set her things down. She was excited about living alone for the first time in her life and her mother had no qualms about it. Evelyn couldn't take it much longer, and got out of the airport with her remaining luggage, which are also quite heavy.
Evelyn's body was stiff and fatigued from the long flight. Several joints cracked in response whenever she made big movements, whispering "Ow!" every time it happened. She inhaled the scent of her birth-country, filling her lungs with the air she had breathed once. With a few last cracks of her bones, she called in a taxi and hit the road.
She looked at the environment of the new place. Everything was completely different from when she was still in China. Very different. In fact, she still brought some of her Chinese clothing with her even though this was the United States. But nevertheless, she would have the get used to the city and live in this country for at least a few years until she gets to college. She would glue her face to the window from time to time to take in her surroundings, which kinda annoyed the taxi driver a bit.
Having nothing left to do save for staring at the window, Evelyn decided to call her mother on the whereabouts of her new apartment.
"Hey, mom?" Evelyn's cracked voice made her notice that she was a little dehydrated.
"Oh sweetie, I was just about to call you when my phone rang! So how's your journey going?"said Cathy on her phone.
"Well, nothing much happened. Just an airplane flight then after working up my stiff body, and now I'm riding in a taxi."
"At least your trip is going smoothly. And about your apartment, you know the name, right?"
"Yeah."
"It's on the 27th floor. I know it might be a little high but you just have to deal with it, it's the only room I can find and its the only apartment closest to your new school."
"I can deal with that, but anyway are you fine with living by yourself though?"
"Of course I can! After all, I am an adult. But the question is, are youfine with living by yourself?"
"Whatever you say, mom. So my apartment is on the 17-- I mean 27th floor right?"
"Yep. Also don't forget to buy pads when you're having a period and drink more water~"
"I know, I know . . . I'm not a kid anymore mom."
"Oh but sweetie, I just always think you're a tad bit a little irresponsible. I mean, the last time I let you use the kitchen, you turned it into an entire mess when I came back home with the groceries!"
"Mom!"
"Alright, alright. But leaving that aside, make sure to take care of yourself when you meet your new roommate~ Mommy's gonna go and cook lunch for herself now, bye sweetie~" With that, Cathy puckered her lips to emulate a kissing sound, much to Evelyn's distaste.
But the one word she noticed made her wander into her thoughts even more. A roommate? Since when did her mother say that to her? This was the first time Evelyn had heard of it. But whatever the case, it better not be a boy because that would make her remember some traumatic memories in her past she doesn't want to think about. Brushing that aside, the taxi drive had finally reached to Evelyn's apartment.
"Twenty dollars," said the taxi driver curtly.
Evelyn rummaged through her bag for her wallet, and handed over a twenty dollar bill to the taxi driver before leaving the place and finding someone else to pick up and earn money. Evelyn looked at the tall building towering over her small figure, remembering what her mother had said, her room was on the 27th floor. She checked with the receptionist and confirmed her moving in to her new home.
The apartment was already renovated, so she doesn't have to worry much about the furniture. The furniture looked cheap and simple, but she knew that it was of good quality since it looked so new and clean. Evelyn knows that her new school was just a five minute walk from her apartment so it's quite convenient for her, though there's the new thing that many students from that school actually live in this very apartment for the same reason as Evelyn's: Shorten their trip to school. Evelyn set down her luggage onto the floor once she made it to the living room. An average sized TV set was at the center of the wall, a couch, a sofa,a carpet and a coffee table was in the living room so far. It just looks like how any other apartment rooms would look like.
Evelyn sat down on the sofa, still tired from traveling. She decided to look around for her room later and take a small nap. Today was Saturday so she could rest for today and another day before going to her new school. But as she was about to doze off . . .
Her mother had called her again. Evelyn picked up her phone, worried that her mother will keep pestering her with over ten missed calls like how she did last time all to silence her for a while.
"Mom?" Evelyn spoke on her phone.
"Oh hello sweetie! Have you reached your new apartment yet?"
"Yeah."
"So you have! Tell me sweetie, how was your new home?"
"I haven't checked the rooms yet . . ."
"Oh that's okay, but first things first, I have something to tell you sweetheart."
"What is it?"
"Actually . . . the thing is," Cathy paused for a second before continuing. "You won't be living alone after all."
"Wait . . . what?!"
"Well, I talked with your father about it and your sister will be coming over to stay with you."
"S-sister?!"
"Well, she technically is your sister I can say that, but anyways, her name is Skylar and she will be your roommate for the rest of your school years~"
"Eh? EHHH???!"
"Oh sweetie, are you mad? But please don't be because I'm sure she's a nice person-" Cathy cut herself off, then continued with a croaky voice. "But Skylar isn't . . . such a good girl."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, what I meant is that your little sister is that kind of girl if you can figure it out yourself once you've met her. Anyway, ta ta sweetie and good luck on your new school years~"
With that, Cathy hung up on her daughter. Evelyn . . . had a little sister. All along she had thoguht she was raised as a single child and her father either died young or had went somewhere else to live but it seems she had the wrong idea, however the latter was true though.
A few hours later, Evelyn went to the nearest grocery store and bought a few items before heading back to her apartment to cook something to eat. Evelyn knew some Chinese foods--probably most of them by now--and was going to cook one in dinner. Some wontons and white rice will fill my empty stomach for sure, she thought.
As Evelyn set down the groceries she bought on the kitchen counter and preparing to make her special wontons, she heard a series of knocks on the door. Evelyn rushed from the kitchen while shouting "Coming!" before unlocking the door. Maybe its the mailman?
But the kind of face she was expecting wasn't what she had in mind.
In front of her, a girl stood there with silky blonde hair that seemed to flow to her upper back. Her blue glassy eyes shot through everything she looks into. Her complexion was snow white, and her skin was rather smooth to the touch. She stood there confidently with her straight posture and stared back at the girl who stared at her face for who knows how long. After Evelyn snapped out of examining the girl's appearance, she was met with a gaze that seemed to pierce her heart.
"Are you Evelyn November Williams?" the girl asked, still standing there when Evelyn notices that she was carrying a rather big and heavy looking bag.
"Um, yes." Evelyn replied.
"Good, seems like this is the right place." With that, the girl casually walks in the apartment and stood there without turning around before asking a last question.
"Where's my room?" the girl asked, standing there with her posture unaffected by the heavy bag.
"Err, you're Skylar, right?" Evelyn attempts to confirm that she is her sister.
"Yes."
" . . ."
A long silence hits the room before it was broken by Skylar. She turned her face back at Evelyn, and scowled at the oblivious girl.
"Hey, are you going to answer my question or not?" Skylar scoffed, giving Evelyn an impression of how her sister acts just like how her mother had said: "But Skylar isn't . . . such a good girl."
Taking in Skylar's character as a brusque type of girl, Evelyn replied, "There's . . . this thing," Evelyn stopped mid-sentence, thinking of the right words to say after she looked through the entire apartment room this afternoon. "We're sharing rooms."
Skylar's expressions doesn't change. She stands there, waiting for another answer. But she waits impatiently enough until she answers back with yet again, another curt reply from her small-looking, but soft lips. "Then so be it. Where is it then?"
"Just on the right side of the living room, near the bathroom."
Skylar then left Evelyn to her own devices without saying a word. She's probably unpacking her things. Evelyn then thought back to her dinner recipe, and began cooking her wontons and white rice her stomach was aching for.
While cooking, Evelyn thinks of how Skylar looked. She was confident, appeared strong though she doesn't look like it on her outer appearance, and most of all, she emitted an aura that screamed: "I'm a matured person for my age." In short, Skylar was the type of girl who might attract many men's attention, not that Evelyn's appearance might as well make men drop their hopes for not being single anymore. Evelyn was quite beautiful herself. She inherited her mother's raven black hair and her dark eyes that looked like black holes sucking in everything anything she looked into, her skin was pale and smooth, she was the girl which many men would dream of having as a wife. But unfortunately, Evelyn doesn't plan on marrying any time soon.
Evelyn shook off her thoughts, and focused on the dish she was making. Once she was done, she turned off the heat from the electric stove and grabbed a bowl, filling the empty space with sticky white rice that was begging to be eaten. It seemed like Skylar had smelled the scent of the rice, and walked out of her--or rather their bedroom--to check on the smell.
"What's that?" Skylar asked inquisitively. She had never seen Asian food at all, so she was curious to see a new type of food appearing in front of her eyes.
"It's some wontons and white rice. Do you want some?" Evelyn offered, but Skylar shook her head.
"I just ate at the airport. I'm going to bed until then. Good night, Evelyn." said Skylar before striding to their bedroom and preparing to sleep. When Evelyn looked at her clothing, she looked like she had already bathed and changed into her nightwear--which was just a pair of navy blue pants and shirt.
Evelyn hoped for the best for their relationship as sisters to continue like this, only a bit more friendlier and casual. But both of their hidden feelings for each other doesn't make that future happen though.
Evelyn wondered, how does she want their relationship to be? As sisters? As friends? She wouldn't know unless time and destiny will enlighten her and show her the path.
