Maira:
We left the burger place only to spot Kaito. The devil in disguise.
He leaned on his fancy white sports car, that probably costs more than anything I could ever afford, in TWO lifetimes. He was wearing a long brown trench coat, a black turtleneck, black jeans with smaller rips in them, white and black sneakers that I knew costed a fortune, and designer black sunglasses. When he spotted me he waved me over, a stupid smile plastered over his fake face.
Wow, I hate this guy so much. “Is that Kaito?” Hana asked worry and awe in her voice.
“Yeah, unfortunately.” I sighed rubbing my temples. “I’ll be right back,” I said before heading toward him. His black hair was messy and went over his forehead. He took off his sunglasses and watched me as I slowly made my way to him. I hated to accept it but he didn’t look bad. I still hate him though.
“Hey Maira,” he said his voice giving me chills.
“I’ll take the deal. For my parents. And they won’t ever get to know about that part either. Or I’ll literally kill you,” I wanted this to end as soon as possible. He was drawing too much attention as it is. “Wow, not even a hello?” he said cocking his brow playfully. Why the fuck does he have to be good looking too the fuck god! “Whatever. I’ll sign whatever papers you need.” I stated before walking away. His hand grabbed my arm and pulled me back. His hand snaked around my waist. Now we’re face to face. “Do you really hate me that much?” he asked, his dark eyes filled with curiosity and a bit of something else she couldn’t quite pin.
“You entered my home without my permission, which is ILLEGAL, manhandled me into listening to your stupid deal that I somehow accepted, oh now I remember why! Because you brought my parents into this, and now I'm supposed to be this puppet for your own good image for a few months before you use me and throw me into the trash. So yes I hate you with every inch of my being.”
Kaito:
The venom in her words stung. Instead of feeling nothing like the usual, her words seemed to have some sort of impact. They cut deeper than I imagined they would’ve. It hurt. Her eyes glowed with anger and resentment. But I couldn’t bring myself to say anything, because she was right. I brought her parents into this, I manhandled her, I ruined her. Her beautiful face contorted into anger and resentment. Her dark hair blew in the light wind. The cold nipping at her nose. Her warm body, so close to mine.
“Call me tomorrow and I can meet whoever I need too, to get the paperwork signed,” she said quietly, her eyes lowering as she placed her hand on my chest and pushed away. At a loss for words, I nodded as she joined her friend. I sighed and went back into my car. I reversed out of the parking lot and dove back home. On the way, I just thought about Maira. She’s gonna drive me insane. I thought, rubbing my forehead. I blasted the radio hoping it would distract me. The traffic was going slower than usual. I was snapped out of my thoughts, to a call from Jesse. I answered it and put it on speaker phone.
“Hey baby,” she said slyly. Jesse was only someone I hooked up with when I was lonely. She threw herself at me all the time, but I always made it very clear, that she was only a hookup.
“Don’t call me that,” I said sharply. The roads were still jammed.
“Awe but that’s what you wanted me to call me last night.” she giggled. “Anyways where are you?” She asked.
“I’m in traffic,” I said bluntly. “Come over,” she responded. I need this.
“Yeah, I’ll be a bit late though,” I responded and hung up. All I need is something to distract me. No, what you need is Maira. I almost choked at the thought. Stupid Promised garbage. I pulled into the exit and continued down. The time passed by quicker, my mind blank. Somehow I made it safely to Jesse’s house, without breaking the law. At least I think I did… I grabbed my phone and headed to the door. Before I even managed to knock, the door swung open. Jesse was only dressed in a short robe, exposing her long tan legs, her bleach blonde hair in soft curls, her face heavy with makeup.
“Hey babe” she winked before pulling me into the house. I walked in, my eyes glued to the gaudy furniture. Jesse’s father was a senator, and her mother was a stay at home wife that clearly married for money. The house was quite large, and decorated in over the top gold furniture that hurt to look at. She led me around the house and pulled out two bottles of alcohol. “Would you like champagne or wine?” she asked seductively. “I’m fine with either,” I quickly responded. I was here for one thing only and I was going to get it. She popped open the champagne and grabbed two glasses. Before thinking I grabbed her hips and pulled her into me, kissing her hastily. “Let’s go to your room,” I growled into her ear and she giggled in response.
Maira:
I sat there, in the bathtub, watching the bath bomb fizzle in the water. The orange and white bled into the water. The scent of orange and vanilla surrounding me. I leaned my head against the small towel I folded and placed beforehand. Man, Hana was so right about these things. My hands picked up some of the water, playing with it. I played some relaxing R&B music in the back, that was truly healing. The artist's soft voice intertwined with the melody. I felt myself relax a bit more in the tub, the warm water reaching my chin. I closed my eyes slowly feeling everything drift away.
I saw blood on my hands. Except it wasn’t my blood. It was someone else's. I looked at the ground and saw the dead girl. Her body was covered in blood, the eyes wide, a pool of blood surrounding both of us. Her chest had a huge gaping hole, her heart on the ground. My head was pounding; I couldn’t hear anything. I looked behind me to find a huge dark spirit watching me. The grin on its face was enough to know that it killed her. And it would kill me too. A spirit vine punctured through my chest and felt it go through my back. Pain ripped through me, but I wasn’t able to scream. The taste of iron present in my mouth. I’m dying. I can’t die. I thought but the pain was so intense. The vine ripped out of me, another empty cry came out. I fell limp on the ground, the rain hitting my body. My eyes started to close. I’m sorry.
I woke up screaming, the pain flooded my senses and immediately grabbed my stomach. Everything was blurry, out of place. I was sobbing, crying.
“Hey, it’s okay, you’re safe with me,” said a calm voice their fingers in my hair. I buried my head into their chest crying, still feeling the aftermath of the pain. My senses slowly came back, and I looked around in panic, only to find myself on the bathroom floor, only a towel covering me.
This is not the alleyway I thought before looking behind me only to find something worse than a dark spirit. Kaito. My eyes went wide, and I pulled away from his grasp pulling the towel closer to my body.
“What on Earth are you doing here?” I asked confused and mortified. Then my eyes landed on the bathtub. Did he see me naked? Horrified I started screaming for help. He quickly covered my mouth with his hand, and violently started shushing me.
“Shut up you idiot, You’re gonna get me caught!” He hissed in my ear. I bit his hand and he yelped in pain, while I pushed myself further away from him. I was up against my door that led to my room. I almost began yelling for help when I heard my mom on the other side of the door.
“Hey, sweetie are you okay?” she asked stifling a yawn. I looked over at Kaito, his eyes wide. My mom would actually butcher me if she saw me like this.
“Uhm, yeah. Just saw a spider!” I said before nervously laughing.
“Okay, sweetie. If you need help just call me,” she said before walking away and closing my bedroom door. Kaito and I let out a small sigh of relief before staring him down.
“What the FUCK are you doing here?” I whisper-yelled at him, pointing my finger at him.
“Calm down, Jesus I almost saved your ass from drowning!” He whisper-yelled back pointing to the bathtub. “Why did you come here?” I asked annoyed.
“Because I had a vis- never mind. It doesn't matter." He said rubbing his temples. “How’d you get in?” I asked aggressively. “I climbed to your window which you conveniently left open.” He said before getting up. I sighed and slowly got up, wrapping the towel around my back.
“Fine, I’ll let you off this time,” I said warily. “Yeah, whatever.” He walked passed me to open the door. “Get cleaned up. We still have to talk.” he pointed out before closing the door. I shook my head in disbelief before draining the orange-colored water and hopping into the shower to rinse myself off. I grabbed a pair of comfy lounge clothes and brushed my wet hair. I did a quick clean up and entered my room.
Kaito sat on my bed whistling a melody, before looking over towards me. He wore a black hoodie and a pair of black sweats. He wasn’t all dressed up for once which was kind of nice. His hair was ruffled like he just got out of bed, and his dark circles were more prominent. Still, he looked like a god which was completely unfair.
“God, I hate you” I sighed before sitting on my computer chair. “Hey!” he said putting his hands up. “I just saved your life!” he exclaimed. “Now I wish you didn’t” I replied underneath my breath. He scoffed and shook his head.
“Now what kind of a dumbass falls asleep while in the bath?” he continued to shake his head in disbelief. “What kind of a dumbass breaks and enters into someone's home AGAIN and pulls them out of a bathtub?!” I fumed. “Hey I didn’t break in, it was my dad!” he retorted. “Blaming your father now aren’t we? What a great son!” I replied sarcasm oozed in my voice.
“Whatever.” he mocked my tone, looking at the wall. A cold breeze came from the window making me shiver as the rain pelted. The flashbacks of my dream came back to me making me shiver even more. I clutched my stomach feeling the pain all over again. I felt Kaito study me before standing up and closing the window. He sighed before he took my arm and sat me on the bed.
“What was the dream about?” he asked softly. “I was in an alleyway,” I shivered. He grabbed the throw blanket and covered me with it, as I felt his hand gently caress my back. “And all I saw was blood. Lot’s of it.” tears started falling down on my cheeks.
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want too.” his voice was almost a whisper. I shook my head. “There’s a dark spirit, that’s killing people.” I choked before he pulled me into his embrace. The pain and the fear went away for a bit. “I’m sorry.” he finally whispered.
“I need to stop it,” I whispered slowly before he pulled himself back. “No. You aren’t going to risk your safety,” he stated before looking into my eyes. “Is that clear?” he asked.
“I have to find it! It’s killing people in ways you can’t even imagine!” I protested. He got up from the bed and turned to face me. “Look princess” he drawled “you are not going near that thing, am I making myself clear?” glowered, setting himself at eye level with me.
“No,” I stated calmly. He scoffed. “Maira, I swear to god, how are you going to kill it? Huh?” He prodded. “Answer me Maira!” he barked making me jump. “I don’t know!” I finally cried tears falling down my face. “I don’t know.” I trembled, placing my head in my hands.
“Maira,” he pleaded as he took my hands, and cupped my face. His eyes were wide pleading me to not do anything. He brushed the tears away on my face with his thumb. “Please help me,” I begged. He sighed facing the wall.
“Look, even if you tell me not to go, I’ll still go. I need to see what happened.” I pleaded, looking over at him. He turned to face me and slowly nodded. “You’ll come?” I blurted. I couldn’t keep the happiness out of my voice. He smirked.
“Yes, but you owe me.” He warned. “And keep close to me. Where you’ll be safe,” he ordered. I frantically nodded before getting up to grab socks and a rain jacket. I shoved on a pair of water-resistant shoes and grabbed an umbrella. “Meet me by the side of the street.” He settled before opening the window and stealing hopping onto the roof. I watched him carefully move down the roof and eventually hop off. Okay then..? I kept my window slightly open just in case, before grabbing my bag and shoving my house keys, two flashlights, and an umbrella in before quietly making my way down the hall, to the stairs. Once I got downstairs I slowly made it to my door, before opening it just a crack and slowly closed it. Once the door was closed I ran to the side of the street where Kaito instructed me to go. The rain was falling harder than ever making it almost impossible to see. The dim street lights allowed me to find Kaito’s white car. I got in the passenger seat to find him texting. He put his phone away before looking up at me. “Describe the alleyway. I’ll probably be able to tell where it is.” he hypothesized.
“Uhm, it was really quiet except for the rain. The alley looked really old and I don’t think anyone actively lives around that area.” I thought back to the dream. “Hmm…” he trailed off. “What did it smell like?” he questioned. I closed my eyes and thought about the scent in the dream. That's when I got something. I opened my eyes “Fish! It smelt like fish!” I babbled.
“Off to the docks we go,” he stated before turning on the car and taking off.
