“It’s alright, love.”
Edith stared at the man above her. He was all sharp jawbones and glowing green eyes sheltered by shadows across his face. He smirked when he saw her staring.
“Yeah, um, sorry.” Edith stepped back and hid her blushing cheeks by smoothing her dress.
“I said it's alright lovey. I knew I was being followed.”He spoke with a smooth Irish lilt that Edith immediately fell for. He looked behind her and she saw a flash of fear cross his eyes momentarily.
“No I wasn’t following you, I was looking for a little man.” Edith peered over his shoulder as she spoke. No little man in sight. She looked back at the mysterious man before her and he smiled.
“A little man?” His smile now in his voice.
“Yes, a little man. Now if you would kindly step out of my way.” She was not going to be teased by a random person she happened to run into on the street.
“I think I might have an idea as to where this ‘little man’ could’ve gone.” He quickly took her by the hand, as if he was in a hurry. Edith pulled away. You don't just follow a strange man down a dark alleyway no matter how attractive he may be.
“Ah, yes, you are going to have to trust me.” He offered his open hand but Edith still hesitated. You don't follow a mysterious man into the dark. On the other hand… if he could help her find Magician... Well, that was a risk she was willing to take. She was so close to finding him this time, she could feel the hope bubble up in her chest. She knew how to protect herself, anyway.
“I’ll just.. Follow you.” She said.
“Right.” The man turned and started down the alley.
You don't follow a strange man into the dark, her conscience told her.
As they dove deeper into the dark corridors, she wondered where he could possibly be going. There were no other doors down here. Just as she had reached the decision that she should turn around, he found an old world Furatus poster and looked it over.
“Now, let’s see.” He spoke quietly as he studied the poster, whispering things under his breath.
“Ah!” Once he found what he was looking for, he pressed his thumb into the middle of its fine lettering that seemed to be advertising coffee.
Not the weirdest thing I’ve seen today. Edith thought.
With a snap, the poster rolled up to reveal a window. No, not a window. It was expanding too the size of a doorway. Then the door appeared. Stained fractured glass with a gold doorknob, its glow illuminated the man's smiling face. Edith realized she was once again staring and looked away.
“So, is this where he is then?” Edith examined the newly formed door with caution. It looked as if a fireplace was roaring on the other side.
“After you.” He opened the door for her and she slowly stepped up to its frame.
What has he done to me, she thought, I would never follow a strange man to a magic door and I especially wouldn't step inside it.
Edith felt entranced as she stood in the doorway and stepped inside, but it was just dark. The warming glow she saw before was gone.
“Wait-” Edith turned around as the door was shut behind her.
Idiot, idiot! You knew better. This was bound to happen.
“Hello? Please let me out!” She banged on the door but found it had turned back into a concrete wall.
Fumbling around in the dark for a light she felt something akin to velvet. Upon further inspection, she found a hanging tassel. A.. curtain? She pulled down on the tassel and the curtain flung open, revealing that she was on a balcony overlooking a giant stage.
Can this get any weirder?
Then, the man that trapped her here walked on stage.
