The Substitute Teacher

Fella

Fella

Aug 03, 2019

"I'm tired," I whined as we approached the school's entrance.

Since the class was still going on there were any people around except for the few who just hung out in the hallway cause they were too bored to deal with the class or the people who've never walked out of school trying to be secretive about it.

Lucas rolled his eyes, "Come on, we need to talk to your mom."

"You sure?" I asked, "How do we know that she won't pull me out of school for a week so can teach me about spells and curses."

"That was...oddly specific, " Collin noted with a tilt of his head.

"She wouldn't do that," Lucas said with a dismissive wave as we left, the 'sneaky' people gawking in envy.

"I'm pulling you out of school for a week so I can teach you about spells and curses. "

"Wow, that's exactly what you guessed," Lucas admitted while biting into a chocolate chip cookie.

I rolled my eyes, "Mom, you'll have to tell the school that we're on a vacation and you hate talking to Principal Hawk."

Mom groaned, "Tay, I don't hate talking the man, I hate him in general!"

I sighed, "Mom, that's not any better!"

Collin tilted his head, "Why do you hate him so much?"

Mom copied my sigh leaning against the kitchen counter, "Hawk is a wizard. We went to the same magical boarding school when we were kids. Some days, in the middle of the night we would seek off into the forest and battle each other. Wizard versus Enchantress.  Each time, he would beat me bloody.  He was merciless and cruel. "

"Is that why? Because he won the battles," Lucas questioned but Mom shook her.

She looked out the window,  "No, he would boast about the battles to other wizard friends which made them believe that I was weak so they would seek me out in search of quick battles."

"In Fella, our school, battles were encouraged. They gave you points which went to your team. Each team was made up of 12 people. The team with the most points would earn privileges to use their magic responsibly outside of school. So each day I was getting ganged upon. My team actually had to start making a schedule to where someone would always be with me." I listened to my mother in shock.

"I've hated that man since then, " She finished and we applauded.

"Wait, why didn't I go to Fella?" I inquired and Collin nodded in agreement.

"Hawk's son goes to Fella and I wasn't sure about whether or not his son was just as mean as Hawk. I didn't want you sharing my fate." She explained and I tapped my cheek in thought.

"Well, what's their school system like?"

"There are three grades, Unus, Duo, and Tribbus. You spend two years in each grade but there is a year between where you spend learning from your family. For example, you start when you're ten so you're in Unus. You don't go to school the next year but then come back when you're twelve." She said making a chart (pic) to show us.

"Odd yet efficient, " Lucas noted and Collin hummed in agreement.

I suddenly snapped my fingers, "Is this why you didn't want me to be a writer because you wanted me to follow in your footsteps?"

She nodded, "You don't all of the magical jobs yet. I don't want you to become a writer without knowing your other options. "

        "Like what?" I asked.

She smiled, "Well, your father and I used to be Potions Masters. We owned a small shop called, Pretty Potions. It's still in our name if I'm correct."

I hummed, "Is there any chance that Lucas and Collin could have magic in them."

Mom laughed, "Sweetheart, everyone had magic in them. The only thing separating us from others is that we have more magic. People with little magic are called Oblivion"

"Do we?" Collin asked with a hopeful smile.

"Let's find out," She smiled sweetly, closing her eyes. I felt a soothing breeze pass through the room. Most likely, Mom's magic spreading out into the room.

Her magic felt warm, welcoming. Like a comfy blanket wrapped around you like someone, you love hugged you close.

"Well, I can't be exactly sure but they might be wizards. On Saturday,  I'll take you guys to see the magical world. You might even be able to see Fella. " She grinned happily and we all cheered.
