Victoria sat. Pondered every thought that entered her mind, while Mr. C droned on and on about Long Division this, Photosynthesis that. She looked over at the boys side, they were passing notes about how they excluded every other possible human being but the ones on the "A-list" as they call it. Basically, if you weren't on the "list", you had no reason to exist within a 50 km radius of the boys. Victoria was so zoned out she didn't hear the bell. But the sight of everyone else leaving was enough to make her leave.
Talking to her chatty friend Monica always helps Vic. Today the discussed the "secret things" the boys were always whispering about. "But Generic Narrator Name," you're saying, "If tHeY wEre WhIsPeRInG, thEn hOw dO tHeY KnoW aBouT iT?" Well, you see, I said Monica was chatty, as a result, news spreads like wildfires caused by hotcakes. Under the name of "Project: Incognito" they knew it was to do with the mazes in the back of the school. But what? That was the million dollar question.
Vic arrived home and checked the mail. Seeing therapy ads, catalogs and the occasional bill, one letter caught her eye. An ad for Johns Disguise Shop. Immediately an idea started forming inside her noggin one that would set off Monica's "Danger, Danger, Danger, Jail, Jail, Jail" alert. She would scream like police sirens if someone pitched her an idea like this. Here's the plan:
Vic would go to Johns Disguise shop, buy a boy costume, and dress up as the new kid at school until she could figure out the plan, and perhaps even take part in scheduling and getting away with the plan.
Vic's bike wheels clicked and clacked along the bitumen road. It was the dead of night, 1:34 AM, so the road was safe as no one except really early workers and drunk idiots. She drifted to a stop, and broke out the lock pick. No one was around, so there was no witnesses at 1:36 AM. She got in and started looking around, before realising that the owner, who's, ironically, name was John, was asleep in the back storage. She tiptoed around before elbowing a tin can onto the floor. A bellowing voice asked who it was, to no answer to Vic. She had awoken the Johnster. (Get it? Is it funny? No? Okay) She finally found the costume and tiptoed out the shop. She was safe.
Vic shoved the costume in the cupboard, and slid into bed.
The next morning, she switched on the family laptop. She went onto an online chat room called MeetMe, that all the kids at her school were on. Her normal account (that she used once) was named DoctorsHateHer123 and had been inactive for 13 months. She logged out and created a new one. "CoolAndNew1776" screamed "I'm new and need help" to Vic, and she couldn't wait to test out... Oh, he had no name. Dylan. Done. She couldn't wait to test out Dylan the next day.
Vic was ecstatic come Monday Morning. Dylan was ready, she was ready, it was all coming together. She chose to stun her mom, by requesting a walk to school. On the way, she chucked on the costume when no one was around and off she went to school. During this time, she was constantly checking Dylan's MeetMe inbox, and by now, it was full to the brim. 1,307 unread messages overnight. I guess that's what it deserved because she joined the public "Local Primary School network. She did that with DoctorsHateHer123 and there is still 23,870 messages still unread.
Upon arrival, everyone had heard of Dylan, how he was new, and his MeetMe page. He was welcomed warmly, which made Victoria wonder why this wasn't her welcome when she was new.
Recess could not come faster for Vic/Dylan. She wondered over to the boys and heard them talking about Incognito. They said "Mazes" "We need to be careful" and something about Principal Davis not doing the job properly. She was fine. All of this pretty much confirmed what Vic thought, but she had to be sure. "What are you guys planning?" "Dylan" asked. They spilled everything. First they welcomed "him" them told him everything. It was coming November 8. That day was Nov 7, which meant it was the next day. Vic went to sleep that day knowing everything.
Nov. 8 was the big day. The day of Incognito had arrived, so why was she not excited? It must be delayed excitement.
As soon as he arrived, Dylan was swept away to a secret compartment of the school he had never seen. They told him everything. When recess came, Dylan wandered into the mazes for prep, when he found every exit guarded. Every. Single. One. Teachers everywhere. "Davis." One kid muttered, "They have turned." They? I asked him what he meant and he told me that Principal Davis was actually three boys in a suit. They must not have liked that they missed out on Incognito, so they made sure no one did. And suddenly a giant shadow appears behind me.
"Brody, Colin, Connor," that same kid said, "it's just not funny anymore. Everyone knows, even Dylan. Stop. Please." And now Brody, Colin and Connor come running out to join us. "The... teachers... They outnumber every one of us, 10 to 1. We can't, man, we just can't. Let's just call the mission off, and no one gets hurt." Said Brody. Had he hurt his head or something? He is known literally as "the alpha of the boys".
And they did. They did call it off, they surrendered, but when the teachers weren't looking, Monica snuck in.
What was she doing?
