"Fear has a large shadow, but he is small"
-Ruth Gendler
Ajax woke to one of the boys shaking him. "Come on, the Keeper is calling for you," He whispered into Ajax's ear. Ajax, barely awake looked over at him. Seeing the anxiety in his eyes, Ajax realized that he better get downstairs. Ajax solely nodded and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes while slipping on his daily wear. heading down the creaky stairs had always been nerve-racking for Ajax but he knew he had to do it. Not for himself but for the other kids, it's his responsibility to take care of them as the oldest after all. As he reached the last step, a sharp crack echoes through the room. Frozen in place, Ajax looks fearfully up at the keeper standing there in the middle of the room. The Keeper turned and if Ajax wasn't already frozen in place, now he was. The burning hatred roared in his eyes like a lion as he glared at Ajax. Fear washed over Ajax; the feeling of wanting to run filled every bone in his body wasn't a pleasant feeling. Oh, how Ajax wanted to run, but nevertheless, he was just a puppet on strings the Keeper pulled. It was in moments like these where Ajax felt like an obedient dog, obeying its master. Ajax knew, deep in his bones that if he ran, he would make it out, but others would suffer from his mistakes. So he stood still like a statue during a hurricane. The Keeper tsked, snapping Ajax out of his state of mind-numbing fear. "Stop acting like an idiot. Go run into town and fetch me the mail like the good doggy you are," The keeper hissed. "I expect you back within the hour" With that, the Keeper turned and stalked out of the room, his cape flowing behind him dramatically. The Orphanage had these grand doors, they used to be so cool but now... They make him feel like he's in prison. The only difference is... Prison is much better than this hell. Knowing he had limited time, he began his journey to the post office.
