At the crack of dawn, Darren opened one of his eyes as the bright morning sunshine brimmed through the window shades. This prompted him to get up from the bed, rubbed his eyes, and take off the bedsheet which was covering him. Darren stood up, moved to where the window was, and swung the window open, letting in more sunlight. The view looked beautiful at the Haven Complex; Darren watched a small group of people outside, ready to start their day. Even within the gated community, he glimpsed Roseland nearby. The autumn sun shined on the yellow cornfields and those mostly big, white, suburban houses on the horizon. Birds flew into the air as Darren saw Magic Users flying on their broomsticks in the sky. It was a beautiful scene to wake up to, comparing his usual wake ups in Clare Point View where he mostly saw people jogging.
Stopping to admire the scene, Darren realized he needed to start his day. Darren took a shower, then put on his clothes and shoes. Room service had come as a lady in a maid outfit walked in with a breakfast tray when Darren opened the door, fully dressed. The maid placed the breakfast on top of one dresser. Before the maid left the room, he thanked the lady then gave her a tip. Bringing his breakfast tray to one of the small tables by the window; Darren sat himself in one chair and placed the tray on the table.
Just when Darren was about to eat his breakfast, he heard another knock on the door. Sighing, he got up to look in the peephole to see who was there. There is his brother, Mark. Darren opened the door to allow him in the room. Mark was still wearing his usual, casual outfit, just a plain t-shirt, ripped jeans, and regular sneakers.
“Good Morning, bro!” Mark greeted as the two of them headed to the small table where Darren’s breakfast is at. They seated themselves, which made Darren slightly uncomfortable being around his older brother.
“I thought you left for California…?” Darren opened his mouth and munched on some French toast.
“How could I since I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to my dear brother? I have been so busy that I didn’t have time for my favorite sibling, who is going to save the Kestrel family!” Mark cheered.
Darren took a drink of his cup of orange juice, then put it down, “Favorite?” This praise was new coming from Mark.
His older brother usually called him “Spawn of Satan” for most of his life. This is something new for both of them to be civil for once.
“Yes, you are my favorite. Look we didn’t get along, but you were always my favorite.” Mark took a piece of his bacon off Darren’s plate, then ate it. “I’m also here because Uncle Raishin, my father, told me to get the amulet.”
“Oh yes, it’s in my backpack. Wait here.” Darren said, getting up from the chair and heading to the other side of the room, where his suitcase is. He did not pack much, other than some clothes and necessities. Darren kneeled down to the floor and grabbed his blue backpack. He unzipped a small part of his backpack to get the amulet. Smiling, Darren then grabbed it in his hand and stood back up to give it to Mark. “Here you go.” Darren puts it in Mark’s hands.
However, Mark couldn’t hold it because, as soon as it touched his hand, he immediately dropped it! In a quick save, Darren caught the falling amulet before it hit the ground. Darren looked at Mark with his eyebrow raised, then stared at the amulet. He watched Mark rubbing his hand, and his brother cried, “Goddamnit, what the fucking hell? It burned me!”
“It never burned me. What the Merlin…?” Darren exclaimed, holding the amulet and checking his hand to see if there were any burns on him too.
“A spell… Aunt Michelle used a protection spell!” Mark pointed out as he finished rubbing his hand, numbing the pain. “Aunt Michelle is a clever little witch. You know what? I'll just use a spell to put it in my bag until my father and I can figure out this situation. Maybe Olive knows how to get around it.” Mark said as Darren watched his older brother waving his hands over the amulet.
The amulet floated into Mark’s bag and he zipped up his bag, keeping the amulet safe.
“I’m sorry. I wish my magic was skilled enough to get rid of that spell.” Darren felt his confidence deflate again about his lack of magic ability..
“Not to worry, bro. I will handle everything. Your work here is done here.” Mark put his hand on Darren’s shoulder to comfort him.
Darren nodded until he heard another knock on his door. Darren looked in the peephole to see a long, dark brunette, young woman. The woman dressed in a flashy, blue dress and dark, red, high heel boots. Soon, Mark’s cell phone rings and he hears him pick up the phone. He muttered some words then sighed.
Mark waved his hand to Darren, directing him to open it. Darren thought he must have known this person was at the door. When he opened the door, the woman walked into the room and stood in front of him. However, there is something about this woman that was familiar.
“I came all the way from the Sector of Etareni. And this is how you greet me, Mark?” The woman called in her loud, booming voice.
Darren knew she wasn’t from around this area; Supernatural Sector of Etareni is in the west part of the country. He remembered there were four government Supernatural sectors: Crocecia, Veilian, Wiccomond, and Etareni. These sectors were just another way to classify Supernatural towns and residents, based on the location and region they lived. The woman walked up to Mark, then bopped his nose to tease him.
Mark’s eyes showed a bit of irritation as his face went from a smile to a frown.
“Knock it off, Roxy! Not in front of my brother!” Mark complained, pushing her hand away from his face.
Darren took another glance at the woman again and gasped. Now he recognized her from the magazines.
“You’re Roxy?! The famous, indie, pop star, right?” He asked the woman, who sat on the bed.
“That’s me! The one and only, fabulous Roxy!” Roxy opened her arms up as she showed off her looks and smiles. She then added, “and you must be Mark’s cutie, little brother that he talks about a lot. It’s nice to see you in person.”
“Rox, why are you here?” Mark spoke sternly then shot his gaze at her.
“I’m here for business and to meet the potential new club members.” Roxy pulled herself off the bed and walked up to Mark.
“What potential club members?” Darren asked.
“Oh, we will learn about it later. You’re a part of the NorthEasters, right? I heard about your band when coming here. I’ll give you a fun fact: I know your leader and drummer; I worked with them in the past.” Roxy conversed when she put her hand to push Mark to keep him from interrupting her.
“Linda and Trenton? Now to think about it, they only have talked about you once…” Darren got lost in his thoughts for a bit, now thinking back to his band.
Darren remembered that Linda and Trenton had experience, in their early career days, with Roxy. However, the two of them never wanted to talk about it. In fact, Darren often observed Linda cringe whenever she saw magazines of Roxy. Maybe an unpleasant experience Linda had with her? Roxy seemed like an okay person and normal when she patted his back and played with his hair. Darren just stared into her sea-blue eyes, blushing in embarrassment and thinking he had something on his face. He heard Mark clear his throat, then pulled Roxy aside.
“Roxy, shouldn’t you be doing something? I’m having an important conversation with my brother right now.” Mark interrupted the moment.
“Well, if you must know, I am here for Mikel. Have you forgotten your job as guidance for Supernatural musicians?” Roxy commented as Darren’s eyes opened wide in interest.
“You have another job? Guidance?” Darren asked.
“You don’t have to know about that right now. Let’s get back to what we are going to do to stop your father from-” Mark was talking until Roxy stepped in the middle between the two.
“You can deal with that later!” Roxy snapped at the boy and interrupted his sentence. “Right now Mikel needs us here. Come along, Marky!” Roxy pulled Mark’s arm, leading him out of the door.
Mark still had his bag the amulet was in, waving goodbye to Darren on the way out. Darren just watched the door slammed shut when the two left the room. He was confused of what just happened right now. So many weird things had happened since they left Clare Point View. He was glad that soon, Chantel and Darren would leave this complex as soon as possible.
