“Living alone isn't that hard.” said Darren, hitting his pen across the biology textbook he was using. “I mean, It’s hard but like, not hard, you know? I can do it. totally…” he sighed and proceeded to brush his hands across his light brown curls in frustration.
Who was he kidding?
He was a mess.
Not only was he talking to himself in his literal shack of an apartment but he was convincing himself of a pure lie.
He stood up from his chair deciding he needed a cup of water. Walking towards the sink of his studio apartment. Then realizing that it was only a mistake to go to the kitchen.
“and there's a mountain of dishes..” he gave off a deep sigh that could be felt lightyears away. There were no cups so now what he did was hold his mouth underneath the sink and just drink from there. That was going smoothly until water shot straight up his nose and made him profusely spit out onto his ceiling.
He just stood there for a couple minutes while small droplets of water dripped off his curls. Taking in the pure stupidity of his actions. The truth of it all was that he couldn't manage it all. School, work, home life, or social life (or little of what he had of it). Everything seemed to be collapsing apart in his brain without warning. The best and only thing he could do was go out onto the balcony and wear his headphones.
Looking up at the sky seemed like the best part of every single day. Everything could be changing in his life, moving into a new place, transferring schools, and changing jobs.
The sky?
The sky stays just as beautiful as the day before it. The sky doesn't collapse on him.
He kept wondering if maybe the universe could offer him something better than being on planet Earth.
“If there was just a way to get there.” Darren looked up at the full moon. The refreshing summer night made everything feel a little lighter. It was something about the moon that also made everything so much lighter.
He looked up for as long as he could, staring at all of the stars he could see. Then suddenly a quick glowing stripe flew across the night sky.
“A meteor?”
This was his first time seeing one in 20 years of living. He quickly took off his headphones and closed his eyes tight.
“I wish to not be alone” he said without hesitation and felt extremely childish afterwards. He put his headphones back on and shook his head. There was no music playing on his headphones but the warmth of having them on made him feel so much better. Ever since he was a kid he always loved having his ears covered for the sake of comfort.
“You're still a kid” he said sadly while he kept his head down.
“No!” He shot his head up and took a deep breath. “I am not a kid!” he yelled out onto the balcony. “I am an adult now! I am alone! I cannn doooo thisss!”
“Shut up!” yelled out a grumpy old man from the house next to his. It made him jump and take off his headphones to yell back a quick “Sorry!”
He quickly escaped back into the house in embarrassment and decided to never breathe again.
* * * *
He woke up in a cold sweat in the morning. There’s a dream he always has that involves him still living happily with his family. Where it's him always walking into the kitchen with the aroma of his mom's fresh sopa de res. Her pinching his cheeks and telling him she loves him as the man he looks like now and not as the little girl she raised. Thing is, he normally wouldn't mind a dream like that, but when it's been happening since he moved out last week.. It starts to get annoying.
Annoying because his mom doesn't really, truly, deeply, love him. Not with the way she reacted to him being a trans man. Not with the way she reacted to his happiness.
“If someone loves you, they’ll be happy at everything you do.” he said out loud and fought back tears. That's what his bestfriend told him. she always knew how to keep him in check. He sleepily stood up from his bed without paying attention to the ground and quickly went to brush his teeth until he tripped and fell right onto his face.
It was a metallic sleeping bag shaped machine right in the middle of his apartment. Very easy to see. He groaned and rubbed his bleeding nose.
“What. the. Hell.” he said, not fully taking in the fact that there was some sort of alien looking cryopod in the middle of his room of all places.
Then he kicked it.
The only thing he could see was a blue glowing light dimming in and out. The turquoise colored light was mesmerizing and very easy to get lost in.
Then he kicked it again.
The light stopped dimming out and it stayed pitch black. Something was moving inside of it. He backed away quickly and went back onto his bed to hold his only stuffed animal which was a white rabbit named Yuki.
“Holy shit.” he whispered. “Holy shit.” he kept going
Then somehow, in some sort of magical way, there was a lot of fog around the room. A man with long white locks that looked like they were made of silk and bright blue eyes like the color of the cryopod sat up.
“Holy shit!” he shrieked out in disbelief. Wondering how the hell it was possible that he of all people had to witness this.
“Oh thank Vizolda I wasn't teleported into any body water. You guys have so much water, you know that? And according to my research it seems to keep on expanding..”
“Holy shit!” Darren shrieked out in a stumped shock as he saw the broad shouldered and NAKED man make his way out of the cryopod.
“Holy shit?” The blue eyes looked at Darren very carefully. Observing every movement and breath he took with his alien eyes. “Is that a new human way of greeting?!” the silvery haired man spoke with a throaty laughter “Holy shit back to you young one!” the unknown being stretched his pale hand out with glee for a hand shake.
Or maybe he expected his hand to be kissed?
