A bustling street during the nighttime. The flea market we have often seen in the past returned in this new society. People still adapt to the old business strategy, growing their funds and supporting their living by setting up temporary stalls and selling variety from charm and talismans to snacks and food.
The biggest city that existed since the domination, many of the remaining humans migrated and took shelter in this glorified developed city. After all, it was the first city established secretly by the ancient deity who had promised the Creator of Life that the world governed by the neo-human would be utterly different from the past.
Although neo-human fulfilled the vow, as no war pledged to ignite, somehow, the darkness lurks within the dark of reality, waiting for the opportunity to arouse calamity among the settled peace.
There are a few neo-humans who tried to coup the society and secretly work for the remnants of the survivor in the demon realm. They are a bondsman to no one, as they believed when they formed a pact with the devil. But in the eyes of the evil, neo-human was no different from the past human, a parasite that exists just for greed and other related negative feelings.
One of the men aged around 40'. Spotted secluded himself in the night light while rushing his speech sentences to report the current situation to his superior.
"Lord Yagami, look like the daughter of the savior managed to escape from Markcheal territory one week ago. She spotted wandering around the flea market with one of the boys from her school," the man spoke in a hurry in delivering the report to his superior, who called Yagami.
"I've already predicted the fall of Markcheal since the sudden burst of dark power. Since our prey already blends in the crowd, I guess the ancient deities can't do anything if we tried to bring her away this time," said the man called Yagami. His identity remains a mystery to us when he still hides in the complete dark of this typical back alley.
"Should we dispatch our men in the market to initiate the operation?" the man asked.
"No. Let it be; keep observing for now. We will strike once there is an opening for us. Plus the boy who keeps her company, I don't think he was nobody since the hypocrite girl always wandering around by herself."
After giving the command, Yagami makes his exit silently, leaving the man alone in the dark, who still bows his head and kneels in fear of the inferiority displayed by Yagami.
Since the demon is already making their move, we can guess the deities won't sit idly and let another problem come after Cynthia. Most probably, the 'elder' ancient gods, already prepare beforehand, picking Walker as their scapegoat, luring the devil to the infinite hell hole.
"Watch your step, Ms. Cynthia. I don't want to have so much trouble finding you in the crowd," Walker said. He carefully held on to Cynthia's collar, preventing her from escaping the punishment she got from the elder last week.
"Why would I attempt to run away again, Walker. I've tried so many times but come to no avail. Don't worry, my little guardian. I just come here to gobble some food for the rest of the night," said Cynthia. She tied her long hair into a ponytail hairstyle as her hand grabbed onto the stick filled with fried beef, flourishing with spice flour.
"Food?" Walker asked, confused to make clear if Cynthia's word had any hidden meaning.
Cynthia paused her ravenous biting on the meat while her head tilted to the side, watching Walker's expression filled with nothingness except the feeling of fear and worry. She resumed her appetite after a while and chuckled over Walker's seriousness, laughing at Walker over react emotion when she said the word 'food.'
"You overreact, Walker. She's been gone since you accompanied me for this whole week."
Gone?! Who's gone? Walker can't stop questioning why his presence has to do with the silent treatment given by Nanami. Did the word 'she' that Cynthia refers to Nanami? Is it Cynthia takes Walker as a mere neo-human? A feeble human being who didn't realize the presence of the darkness still residual inside her body? Or is it just Cynthia denying the fact of Nanami's existence?
"Ms. Cynthia, I—"
"Stop with the word of Ms. I kinda grow queasy over it. We are both the same age. Shouldn't we drop the honorifics if you treat me like a friend?" Cynthia passed out another stick right in front of Walker. A speech that silent Walker thousand thoughts of question. Gentle feelings he caught in Cynthia's gesture cause him to drop his fool act in front of the woman who he loved in the past.
"Come, grab it while hot. I heard from aunt Xiah that beef meat should munch in our mouths while it hot. If not, the greasiness will spoil the tenderness of the meat itself," Cynthia explained while carrying a broad smile. She held the stick higher, reaching it to Walker's lips. Her sudden reaction makes Walker get caught in surprise and trip his ankle.
Cynthia reacts swiftly after knowing her sudden move, surprising Walker, who seems timid and introverted. She can't sacrifice the meat stick on both hands, but the short moment won't allow her to think twice, resulting in her foot going jumbled and tripping too at the exact moment.
Walker twisted her abdomen in that instance and swiftly moved his feet to stand on a steady stance. Naturally, both his hands hold on Cynthia's waist and back shoulder, realizing they have once again stayed in an awkwardly lovey-dovey pose, just like they met the first time in TatSuet citadel.
Gulping her fear away, Cynthia tried to stay calm by not speaking an inch of a word. But both of her meat sticks fall off her hand, betraying her true feelings about the moment she had together with Walker. Cynthia had it confused, conflicted herself in this sweet dilemma. During a week she spent with Walker, she couldn't bring herself to be inferior to Walker. Her heart was shrouded with weird tingling pain as if she had crossed paths with him in a tragic past.
Cynthia meant sincerely to her word when she detested the honorific. Apart from Rin, Walker was the second person in this world that Cynthia acknowledged as a friend.
"Stay with me, Cynthia."
Cynthia was puzzled as she heard Walker's sentences. Out of nowhere, how could he say something so embarrassing and yet under this kind of situation?! Does it mean he already tried to make his first move against Cynthia?
No matter how much we tried to connect
the relevance of the short sentences spoken in that situation, there is no
better explanation than the only thing we've imagined in our minds. How would
Cynthia react? Will she refuse? Or she didn't dare to reject or reply to the phrase
told by Walker.
