The morning sun cast a warm glow through the windows of "Bean There, Done That," and Chris felt a sense of determination as he set up the shop for the day. The usual comforting aromas of coffee and pastries filled the air, but today there was an undercurrent of urgency in Chris's movements. He couldn't stop thinking about Alphonso and the fear he had seen in his eyes.
The bells above the door chimed, and Chris looked up, his heart leaping as Alphonso walked in. He looked more composed today, but Chris could still see the shadow of anxiety in his eyes.
"Morning, Alphonso," Chris greeted with a warm smile. "The usual?"
"Yes, please," Alphonso replied, his smile more genuine this time.
As Chris prepared the vanilla cinnamon latte, he noticed Alphonso choosing a seat at the counter instead of his usual spot by the window. Chris felt a flicker of hope. Maybe this was a sign that Alphonso was starting to feel more comfortable, more willing to open up.
Chris placed the latte in front of Alphonso and leaned against the counter. "How are you today?"
Alphonso took a sip of his latte, savoring the flavor before replying. "I'm okay, Chris. Thanks for asking."
Chris nodded, deciding to take a different approach. "You know, running this café has taught me a lot about people. Everyone has a story, something they're dealing with. It's part of what makes this place special, I think. It's a place where people can just be themselves."
Alphonso looked up, his eyes meeting Chris's. "That's a nice way to see it," he said softly.
Chris smiled. "And you? What's your story, Alphonso? I mean, if you don't mind sharing."
Alphonso hesitated, his fingers tracing the rim of his coffee cup. "I guess... I've always been the kind of person who tries to make everyone else happy, even if it means putting my own needs aside."
Chris listened intently, nodding. "That sounds tough. It's important to take care of yourself too."
Alphonso sighed. "Yeah, I know. But it's hard when you care about someone so much that you'd do anything to keep them happy."
Chris's heart ached at the unspoken words. He could see the conflict in Alphonso's eyes, the struggle between wanting to please Derek and the need to protect himself. "You deserve to be happy too, Alphonso. Don't forget that."
Alphonso smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes this time. "Thanks, Chris. You always know what to say."
As the morning progressed, Chris noticed Alphonso gradually relaxing, the tension in his shoulders easing. They chatted about lighter topics—books, movies, favorite coffee blends—and Chris felt a connection growing between them, a sense of trust beginning to form.
Just as the café started to fill up with the mid-morning rush, the door chimed again, and Chris's stomach dropped. Derek walked in, his eyes immediately zeroing in on Alphonso at the counter. Alphonso's demeanor changed instantly, the tension returning in a heartbeat.
"Hey, Alphonso," Derek said, his voice deceptively casual. "There you are. I've been looking for you."
Alphonso forced a smile. "Hey, Derek. Just grabbing a coffee."
Derek's gaze shifted to Chris, a hint of suspicion in his eyes. "And who might this be?"
Chris stepped forward, extending a hand. "I'm Chris, the owner of this café."
Derek ignored the hand, his eyes cold. "Right. Well, Alphonso, we should get going."
Alphonso glanced at Chris, a silent plea in his eyes. Chris nodded subtly, offering silent support. "Of course," Alphonso said, standing up. "Thanks for the coffee, Chris. It was great, as always."
"Anytime, Alphonso," Chris replied, his voice steady. "Take care."
As Alphonso and Derek left, Chris felt a mix of frustration and helplessness. But he also felt a spark of determination. Alphonso had opened up a little today, and Chris knew that was a step forward. He just had to be patient, to be there for Alphonso when he needed it most.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, but Chris's mind kept drifting back to Alphonso. He knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but he was ready to offer his support, one cup of coffee at a time. And maybe, just maybe, together they could brew a little hope amidst the darkness.
the repetition of 'the usual' 'yes please' absolutely melts my heart and kind of reminds me of Nick and Charlie from heartstopper with the 'hi'. (iykyk)
