Chapter 1: Lab Accident

Chapter 1: Lab Accident

Oct 26, 2024

The lab was perfect. Every morning, I walked in, inhaled the faint scent of lavender and lemon—the result of my very specific “no harsh chemical smells” rule—and felt the stress slide off my shoulders. If heaven had a scent, it had to be this blend of calm citrus and soothing lavender.

I glanced at the counter, where the rows of neatly labeled jars and vials waited like soldiers, ready for the day’s battle against filth and infection. I had organized everything myself, down to the last pipette. Some people thought I was obsessive. I preferred “dedicated.” After all, how could I create the world’s next revolutionary cleaning product if my workspace didn’t reflect that commitment? I’d bet my last penny that nobody else’s lab sparkled like mine.

“Okay, Angela,” I muttered, rolling up my sleeves. “Today is the day.”

I had a new compound to test—Compound 57. Not the snazziest name, but if this experiment worked, it would be the next big thing in sanitation. Better than any antiseptic, more powerful than any disinfectant. And the world needed it. People were getting sick from the lack of basic hygiene, and it drove me crazy to think that something so simple could cause so much suffering. So, I’d decided: if no one else was going to fix this problem, I would.

I picked up the vial containing Compound 57 and squinted at it. Clear, perfectly measured. Not that I’d expect anything less from myself, but it was satisfying all the same.

“Future of clean,” I whispered to the beaker with a smirk, as if it might understand. I poured the vial’s contents into the beaker and watched the liquid swirl, mesmerized for a moment. This was the moment all the late nights and bad coffee had been building toward.

I carefully reached for the next ingredient: a fine white powder. I’d weighed it down to the milligram, just in case. And yes, I knew that sounded excessive, but some compounds didn’t play well with “close enough.” Safety first, always. I tipped the powder into the beaker and watched it settle, holding my breath.

And that’s when it started—a faint shimmer, almost like the beaker was coming to life. Odd, but not entirely surprising. Chemistry had its little quirks. Still, I hadn’t written “shimmering” down in my notes.

“Interesting…” I mumbled, leaning closer. The liquid began changing colors, faintly at first, then an alarming, almost glowing blue. Now, I might be known for a stubborn streak, but even I knew this wasn’t exactly what I’d planned. My excitement took a back seat as my instincts told me, loud and clear, to step back.

“Okay, that’s…new,” I said to the glowing solution, hoping that, if I watched it closely enough, it would just calm down. The bubbling began then, small bubbles at first, like a soda fizzing up, but not nearly as friendly. A sharp, sulfurous odor started creeping into the air.

Stay cool, Angela, I told myself. This was just another one of those “learning moments,” right?

But the liquid had other plans. The bubbling intensified, and before I could even blink, the blue liquid turned a dangerous, murky gray. My heart started pounding, but I kept my hands steady. Just a few more adjustments, and I’d have it under control. Probably.

But my instincts were screaming now. Logic told me to step back, to let this experiment fizzle out, and try again later. But my pride—that stubborn streak that got me through engineering school and into my own lab—told me I could handle it.

And then—well, I got my answer.

With zero warning, the beaker exploded in a flash of light, a loud bang echoing through the lab as a cloud of harsh, burning chemicals hit me like a punch. My body flew backward, slamming against the counter, and I felt a sharp pain shoot through me before everything started spinning.

My vision blurred. The world tilted. I tried to focus, to make sense of the chaos around me, but all I could see was light, color, and smoke.

My mind scrambled to put together a coherent thought, but it was like trying to hold water in cupped hands. This can’t be it. I can’t have come this far just for it to end like… like this.

I could barely move. My fingers felt numb, my arms were heavy, and my mind drifted in and out. Even through the haze, I could feel the sting of regret. I’d been so close. So close to making a difference. If only I’d just taken a step back, listened to the part of me that had whispered stop.

My eyes fluttered, the lab swirling around me. And somewhere in that swirl, my thoughts broke through for a final, desperate reflection. All that work… all that effort… I hope it wasn’t all for nothing.

The darkness started pulling me under, like a warm blanket after a long, exhausting day. And oddly, despite the chaos, I felt a strange calm wash over me. If this is it, well… at least I went out doing what I loved, right?

In the last flickers of consciousness, I wondered what would happen to my research. Would someone take over? Would the world ever get that chance at a safer, cleaner future? I hoped so. I clung to that hope, wrapping it around myself like a lifeline as my vision faded and the last of my thoughts slipped into the darkness.

And then—nothing.
