Chapter 13: Testing Disinfectants and Cleaning Solutions

Chapter 13: Testing Disinfectants and Cleaning Solutions

Nov 05, 2024

I gathered my supplies carefully in the workshop, the scent of vinegar wafting through the air. In front of me, I had herbs spread out—lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Their earthy fragrance mingled with the vinegar’s sharpness, making my makeshift lab smell like an odd combination of kitchen and apothecary. I reminded myself why I was doing this: creating a disinfectant solution to tackle the castle’s dusty corners and lingering smells. I knew it wasn’t much by modern standards, but in this place and time, it was a breakthrough.

As I measured the vinegar and added boiling water, I thought about how vinegar, even in my past life, had always been the trusted go-to for cleaning. It wasn’t exactly revolutionary, but it was accessible and effective. I tossed in a handful of herbs for their antimicrobial properties, a trick I’d remembered from my studies. The lavender was mainly for scent, because if I was going to get the servants on board with using this solution, it had to at least smell halfway decent.

I was so focused that I almost didn’t notice Sara, standing by the door, watching me intently.

“Miss Liana… what are you doing?” she asked, eyes wide with curiosity and maybe a bit of apprehension.

I grinned. “Making a cleaning potion!” I said, stirring the solution with a bit of dramatic flair. “It’s a blend of vinegar and herbs that’ll help kill those pesky germs hiding in the castle’s nooks and crannies.”

The maid wrinkled her nose. “Germs? Like… little creatures?”

“Yes, exactly! Little creatures that spread sickness. They’re invisible to the eye, but they’re there.” I tried to keep it simple, seeing her eyes widen at the thought. I didn’t want to scare her off entirely. “And this potion can help keep those invisible troublemakers away. Plus,” I added, lifting the jar of vinegar-herb mix and taking a quick whiff, “it’ll leave a fresher scent.”

Sara nodded slowly, her curiosity overcoming her skepticism. “I never thought about it like that before, Miss Liana. But… it does smell… well, better than the usual smell.”

I laughed. “That’s the idea! Now, let’s see how this works.”

A little later, I headed down the drafty castle corridors, armed with a damp cloth and my vinegar solution. I picked a hidden, neglected corner in the storage area, figuring that if this experiment went wrong, it wouldn’t be too noticeable. The stone walls were coated in dust, with patches of mildew and grime clinging to the surfaces. I dipped the cloth into my solution and began scrubbing.

With each swipe, the dark stains started lifting, and the faint herbal smell began to replace the stale, damp odor. The vinegar was working its magic, cutting through layers of dirt, and I was feeling pretty pleased. In my old world, this was all so normal, but here it was almost like casting a spell. I chuckled to myself, thinking that in this medieval world, I might just pass as a cleaning sorceress.

“Miss Liana?” came a voice from behind. I turned to find one of the castle guards watching me, arms crossed, with an expression of bewilderment.

“Oh, just cleaning!” I said brightly, holding up the cloth. “It’s a special solution. Gets rid of dirt and smells.”

The guard sniffed the air, raising his brows. “It does smell… nicer than usual.”

“Yes! And it’s good for health too,” I said, continuing to wipe down the wall. “Less dirt means fewer chances of getting sick. Cleaner air and surfaces can make a big difference.”

He nodded, albeit slowly, like he was still figuring out how vinegar and health were connected. But he didn’t question me further, and I figured that was good enough for now. Little by little, I was planting seeds of change.

Over the next few days, I continued my small cleaning projects around the castle, targeting places like the kitchen and servants’ quarters. I quietly cleaned the main entryway too, rubbing down door handles and scrubbing floors where dirt tracked in from outside. I didn’t tell everyone what I was doing—some things just had to be shown, not explained.

Gradually, people began to notice. The kitchen staff started commenting that the cooking area seemed fresher, without the faint moldy smell that used to linger. In the servants’ quarters, a few maids remarked how the air didn’t feel as stuffy. When the head cook, Mistress Edna, approached me in the kitchen, I knew my work had finally caught the attention of the castle’s real decision-makers.

“Miss Liana,” she said, hands on her hips but a smile softening her usually stern face, “I hear you’ve been up to some unusual things around here.”

I returned her smile, keeping my tone casual. “Just trying to keep things a little cleaner. I thought it might help with the smells… and maybe prevent a bit of sickness too.”

She chuckled, shaking her head. “You’re certainly different, that’s for sure. But the kitchen does smell fresher, I’ll give you that.”

I took that as my cue to explain a bit more. “You see, when dirt and waste build up, they attract all sorts of invisible little germs. And those germs can spread illness.” I made sure to keep my tone light and unthreatening. “This cleaning solution is a mixture of vinegar and herbs—it’s strong enough to wipe away the dirt, and the herbs help freshen up the air.”

Edna nodded thoughtfully, clearly weighing my words. “Well, if it helps keep everyone healthier, I suppose it’s worth a try.”

That was about as close to an endorsement as I could hope for from Mistress Edna. Encouraged, I spent the next few days sharing my cleaning solution with the staff, showing them how to use it in their daily routines. I placed small bowls of the mixture in common areas, like the kitchens, the entryway, and even near the main staircase, so it would be easy for people to grab when they needed it.

As time went on, the subtle changes began to become more noticeable. The usual complaints about stomach aches and coughs seemed to decrease, and the castle simply felt brighter, more pleasant. Some of the servants started coming up to me, expressing their interest in the solution and asking if they could try it in their own areas.

“Miss Liana,” one of the housemaids said, “I tried your vinegar mix in the linen closet. It doesn’t smell musty anymore! It’s like… like fresh air, almost.”

I smiled. “That’s wonderful! Keep using it whenever you notice any odors, and feel free to add a few herbs for an even fresher smell.”

Others joined in, expressing their amazement at how much better the castle felt. I could see the difference in their faces too—there was less fatigue, fewer complaints of minor ailments, and more willingness to follow the routines I’d suggested. Even a few of the older staff who had been skeptical at first started to come around, drawn in by the positive results.

Eventually, word of my cleaning efforts reached the head of the household staff, who came to see for herself what all the fuss was about. She walked with me through the kitchen, pausing to take in the fresh scent and inspecting the areas I’d scrubbed down.

“Lady Liana,” she said, her tone serious but not unfriendly, “I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. But I can’t deny that things seem… better. Cleaner. And I’ve noticed fewer complaints from the staff about their health.”

I nodded, keeping my response humble. “I just wanted to help in any way I could. It’s a small change, but sometimes small things can make a big difference.”

She gave me a rare, approving smile. “Well, keep it up young lady . I think the castle is better off for it.”

As she walked away, I felt a surge of satisfaction. My efforts were beginning to pay off, not just in cleaner spaces but in healthier, happier people. And as I looked around at the fresh, gleaming surfaces and inhaled the light scent of herbs, I knew this was only the beginning. There was a whole castle—and perhaps even more—waiting to be transformed.
