When Atlas awoke, he was greeted with unfamiliar scenery. Light chatter surrounded him as he sat up with a blanket draped over his shoulder. The crackling fire of a fire place proivded warmth amosgt his back. The walls were a dusty brown, the wood chipped and partially rotted. The floors were in no better condition, as they looked ages beyond their functionality; it seemed as if a single step would cause the entire house to fall. But Atlas felt strangely at ease. Elidi danced around, chatting about seemingly nothing with Soleil. He occasionally pushed her away, attempting to focus on the large pot he had on an open fire. However, she continued to pester him with nonsensical questions and immature jokes. It didn't take her long to notice the confused boy in the corner. "He's up!" She squeaked before running over; she hadn't realized that she had basically teleported in front of him. Atlas flinched at the sudden movement. He eyed Elidi, creating some distance between them. Although he was happy to see someone seemingly close to his age, her excitable nature deterred him from saying or doing much. Elidi tilted her head, eyeing the boy intently. He averted his eyes, intimidated by her gaze. Soleil turned from the stove. "I would say morning, but the sun set long ago." He laughed. "I can't imagine how exhausted you must've been to sleep for so long." His green hair was tied into a high ponytail tail and an apron rested on his body. "We should probably do something about that hair," He says, pointing a wooden spoon in his hand at Atlas'. Atlas twirls a strand of his hair between his fingers. He'd never given his hair much thought; he usually had more important things to concern himself with. His hair lay sprawled in all directions, flowing onto the ground with unkempt length. "Can I cut it?" Elidi chimed, reaching to touch Atlas' hair. He fliched, instinctively moving backwards. He shook his head, his hands beginning to tremble. Elidi quickly retracted her hand, confused by his reaction. "Oh, I..." She leaned back, averting her eyes. Soleil placed his finger on his chin, assessing how to deal with the situation. He turned and dished out three bowls of soup, laying them on a small round table in the corner. Elidi ran over immediately, digging into her meal as if forgetting about what just happened. "This is for you. Although it may be a bit hard to eat with all that hair in your face." Soleil points at the extra bowl on the table, then ponders for a bit. He walks into a different room, shuffles around a bit, then walks back out with a long piece of cloth. He moves over to Atlas and kneels down in front of him, ensuring to maintain some distance. "If it's ok, I'd like to tie this around your head so your hair won't be in the way when you eat." He speaks gently and smiles softly, hoping to appease the young one. Atlas looks at the cloth, then tugs at his hair. Now that he's had a moment to think about it, it is quite bothersome. He grabs the cloth and fiddles with it for a moment. It's clear he doesn't know what to do with it. Soleil stifles a chuckle and takes the cloth, tying it around the front of Atlas's head so his hair is pushed back. Soleil found his hand clutched into a fist as he stared at the boy's face.
Sunken cheeks and eyes, bruises and cuts scattered around his face and body, severely malnourished, it was impossible to tell his age at first glance. Soleil's heart pounded as he grit his teeth. How could someone abandon and treat a child like this? The mere thought disgusted him. His head throbbed violently for just a moment. I rubbed his temple before walking over to the dining table, Atlas quietly following behind. Elidi had already finished her bowl and was walking over to the pot for another serving. Atlas weakly picked up a spoon and shoveled the soup into his mouth. He was overjoyed by the flavor and the chance to have a proper meal. He ate quickly, occasionally choking on his large spoonfuls. Elidi returned to the table, matching his eating pace, unintentionally creating competition, albeit just with herself. Soleil rolled his eyes as he had tried to instruct Elidi to eat more slowly previously, but clearly to no avail.
"Where are you from?" Elidi asks, licking the last bit of soup from her lips. Atlas swallows a large spoonful, then stops for a moment before shaking his head.
"Don't... Know." He says quietly. His memories were fractured; he couldn't paint a clear picture of anything about his past.
"That's ok, I don't remember where I'm from either. I don't really know what happened, one day, I had parents, the next, I was out on the street on my own. But don't worry, Soleil is really nice! He will take care of you. He's also super strong, so we won't have to worry about being attacked or anything," Elidi smiles brightly. Soleil gently hits the back of Elidi's head. "You make it sound like I'm running an orphanage. Either way, it's his choice if he wants to stay or not," Soleil states, leaning back in his chair. Elidi tries to swat at Soleil, but he just holds her at arm's length.
Atlas stares at the two, baffled but mildly intrigued by their peculiar nature. As the two continue to play fight, Atlas begins to feel his own presence begins to feel quite out of place. "Thank you." He says, abruptly standing up from his seat. Elidi stares. "I cannot stay. I am a burden." His voice remains low. Elidi balls her hands as she stomps over to his side. Atlas steps back, assuming he was going to get hit. "You are not a burden! You can be a friend, our friend! We can play together and we could get more fruit!" She holds her hand out. Soleil sits with his arms crossed, curious about the youthful interaction. Atlas stares at her hand, genuinely contemplating whether he could stay, if he should stay. Everything is telling him that he should. There is no harm, this is safe, this is welcome. But he can't. He does not deserve a safe, welcome, or a home. "No," he shakes his head and gently pushes Elidi's hand down. "I must go." He states, his eyes are weak. "If you really cannot stay with us, then that's alright. But always know you can come back here." Soleil walks over to the front door with a gentle smile on his face. Elidi huffs angrily, preparing to give Atlas another spiel. Atlas walks towards the door, taking a look at his empty bowl of soup before pushing it open. With a creak, the door closes behind him.
"I can't believe you just let him leave like that!" Elidi throws her hands into the air, waving them angrily. "Do you ever pay attention? You always jump to conclusions when it comes to me. Have I ever done something without intention?" Soleil scoffs. "You suck!" Elidi says before pushing the door so hard that it falls off its hinges. Soleil stares at the broken door, cursing under his breath.
Elidi is confronted with a scene of Atlas staring at the vast fields of blue flowers trickling down the mountainside. Soleil's house is intentionally located in a hard-to-reach area. A mountain so steep that only he can successfully traverse up and down. However, the intricate and dangerous layout pays out in its beauty. Amongst the flora are beautiful blue flowers that seem to catch the moonlight in their petals, sprawled everywhere the eye can see. Clean water flows in rivers and occasional waterfalls. Truly a sight to behold and an overwhelming one at first glance.
Atlas stood in awe, tears welling in his eyes. Elidi playfully runs through the field of flowers, sending luminescent petals into the night sky. "I'd like to stay", Atlas states with a sob.
