The Dawn Code

CHAPTER 5: THE DEAL

CHAPTER 5: THE DEAL

Sep 09, 2025

"Get out of the car, buddy! Why are you so slow?"
The Big-faced Cat saw Linden wasn't following. He quickly ran back, opened the car door, and urged Linden out. "It's almost midnight, brother! Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Sigh...
Linden sighed. His only goal tonight was to sketch Keke Cat; he had no intention of robbing a bank again. But this Big-faced Cat had been persistent, dragging and pulling him along.
"Oh well, since I'm here."
Linden jumped out of the car and caught up with the Big-faced Cat.
Rustle, rustle, rustle...
They arrived at the bank entrance.
"Is it done?" the Big-faced Cat asked.
His subordinate nodded.
Bang!!
Blood splattered all over the wall!
The Big-faced Cat wiped his gun. "Now there's one less person to split the money with, we both get more!"
"Mm-hmm."
Linden nodded. "You absolutely can't keep someone with such dirty hands."
"What the heck?"
The Big-faced Cat was stunned, his eyes wide as he looked at Linden. "How did you know that?"
"Look at his face! 'Disloyal' might as well be written all over it!"
"Seriously, buddy?"
The Big-faced Cat scratched his head, looking at Linden doubtfully. "Never mind, let's go!"
Rustle, rustle, rustle...
The two arrived at a fork in the corridor.
Click.
The masked subordinate cut the wires. "It's done, the alarm system is disarmed!"
Bang!!
The electrical box was full of blood!
"Serves him right."
Linden, the pure-love warrior, scoffed. "A scumbag who tries to seduce his boss's wife? Death is too good for him."
"What the hell?!"
The Big-faced Cat jumped up in shock. "You actually know about that messed-up situation?!" He spat, his face turning green with anger. "Who the hell leaked the information! If even you know, doesn't the whole world know that I, Big-faced Cat, was cuckolded by my subordinate?"
"Well... not the whole world."
Linden tried to comfort the Big-faced Cat. "I just read it on his face. Look at his expression; 'seducing boss's wife' might as well be written all over it."
"Buddy, are you messing with me? Writing essays on people's faces? Besides—"
The Big-faced Cat kicked the corpse over. "He was facing away from you, masked, in the dark—how could you possibly read his face?"
"I'm giving you an out, just take it. Do you want me to say the whole world knows?"
"Ahem... let's go, let's go, we're in a hurry."
Ahead.
A fat man ran up from the underground passage. "Boss—"
Bang!
The Big-faced Cat turned to look at Linden. Linden looked back at him, saying nothing.
"Do you know why I killed him?"
"This one, I genuinely don't know," Linden shook his head.
"This guy was the worst! He was planning to kill all of us and take all the money for himself, he even had the escape routes planned! Tell me, shouldn't I kill him?"
"You two are just pot calling the kettle black..."
The two continued onward, arriving at the bank vault. The familiar black wall. The familiar silver password door.
"Alright, buddy, your turn!"
The Big-faced Cat pointed at the password door. "You need to crack the code quickly! Once the main power is restored, the security system here will automatically trigger an alarm!"
"Don't worry, I only need 10 seconds."
"That amazing?!" The Big-faced Cat exclaimed, his voice cracking!
Linden reached for the Big-faced Cat's lower back—
"Ow, what are you doing?"
"Borrowing some C4."
Linden pressed the switch and slapped the C4 explosive onto the silver password door!
"Run!"
"Shift—"
Boom!!!
Boom!!!
Boom!!!
Earth-shattering explosions deafened them. Countless bricks fell, and the entire corridor was filled with smoke and dust, a hazy gray.
"Pfft!"
The Big-faced Cat got up, spitting out plaster. "This is how you 'password experts' crack codes?! Where's the 'expert' part of that title?!"
"Just tell me if it's efficient or not."
Linden walked over from the other end of the corridor.
"How did you run so far? I just saw you flying on the wall!" The Big-faced Cat got up, looking shocked at where Linden had been a moment ago.
"It's called parkour."
The dust settled. The password door was long gone, replaced by a large hole in the black wall.
The Big-faced Cat quickly scurried inside, and Linden followed.
The Big-faced Cat looked left and right... looked left and right... looked left and right...
"Where's the money?"
"Who are you asking?"
"I'm asking you where the money is!!"
"I don't know!"
"You told me there would be piles of money here!! Piles of gold bars!!"
The vault was empty. Aside from the safety deposit boxes on the surrounding walls, it was utterly bare.
The Big-faced Cat completely lost it! He stepped forward and grabbed Linden by the collar! He pressed the gun to Linden's temple, veins bulging!
"You're messing with me! You said there was money here! That's why I came with you!"
"I didn't say that!"
"I did!"
A clear female voice came from behind. The Big-faced Cat stretched his neck, looking past Linden—
Bang!!!
Linden felt a watermelon explode near his shoulder, red juice splattering all over his face! There were also some bone fragments.
"Intense."
Linden wiped his ear, feeling his adrenaline surge. He pushed the Big-faced Cat's corpse away, his breath filled with the smell of blood. In previous dreams, he'd been headshotted countless times by snipers, but being the victim made it different. This was his first time experiencing a headshot up close.
Tap, tap, tap.
The woman walked over with light steps.
"Why did you lie to Big-faced Cat?" Linden asked the woman.
"What did I lie to him about?"
"You lied to him, saying there was money and gold bars here, but in reality... your only goal was the safety deposit boxes, right?"
"None of your business."
The woman rolled her eyes at Linden. "Go cool off somewhere, don't make me regret saving you."
With that, the woman walked along the wall, examining the names on each safety deposit box.
Linden wiped his neck with his shirt, then remembered... In yesterday's dream, this woman also shot the Big-faced Cat when he was about to kill Linden, saving him. Today, just a moment ago, when the Big-faced Cat had a gun to his head, the woman deliberately called out to distract him, then shot him.
It was strange. He had no relation to her, hadn't even met her face-to-face... Why would a ruthless killer like her not only refrain from killing him but actually save him?
"Why did you save me?"
"None of your business."
"You're no fun to talk to!"
At that moment, the woman found her target—the safety deposit box with the name [Linden] on it. She dropped her small computer and began fiddling with the combination lock, no longer paying attention to Linden.
"How about this, let's make a deal."
Linden stepped forward. "You tell me why you saved me, and I'll help you open that safety deposit box. You'd be getting a great deal."
"Heh!"
The woman was amused. "Do you really think that just because you're wearing an Ultraman mask, you're a cryptographer too?"
"I can crack codes more easily than a cryptographer," Linden replied.
"Nonsense! Why should I believe you?"
"Because..."
Linden pulled the elastic from the back of his head. He took off the Ultraman mask. Looking directly at the woman, he said, "I am Linden."

Since the day he was born, Linden has been trapped in a dream loop—living the same day again and again. For more than twenty years, he’s done whatever he pleased: robbing banks, blowing up buildings, chasing women, as if life were nothing more than an endless game.

“So, what did you do last night?”
“Something different. For the first time, I saw someone from my dream… in real life. And she was beautiful.”
The officer didn’t flinch, just nodded, his pen scratching steadily across the page.
“Go on. I’m listening.”

But that coincidence was only the beginning. A cold, enigmatic woman, a mysterious bank vault, and a deposit box engraved with his name tear open the fragile boundary between dream and reality. Each time “Dawn” arrives, the world resets—yet fragments remain. Patterns too deliberate to dismiss, clues too sharp to ignore.

Piece by piece, Linden begins to glimpse a larger truth. The shadows of history’s greatest minds—Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Galileo—surface across the loops. Could they have been caught in the same endless cycle? Were they guardians of something greater, passing fragments of knowledge across centuries of resets?

Now the burden is his. He must decide whether to keep living recklessly inside his dream, or to confront the trial hidden within it. Because if Linden fails to uncover his own Dawn Code, the loop won’t just imprison him forever—it will drag all of human civilization into an eternal darkness, one reset at a time.
