The Duke Who Changes

Chapter 6: You Hate Me Yet You Cling To Me

Chapter 6: You Hate Me Yet You Cling To Me

Oct 04, 2025

As I walked down the hallway, I spotted Lord Lance approaching me. "Lord Lance, how is Young Lord Ethan doing?" I asked, concern etched on my face. Lord Lance's expression remained neutral as he replied, "Young Lord Ethan is sleeping soundly in his chambers, Lady Wyrmsley."

I nodded, relieved. "Good to hear it, Lord Lance. Have a great night, my Lord." I bid him a calm farewell and proceeded to my chambers.

The night was peaceful, with the gentle breeze rustling outside the Duchy. After a relaxing bath, I retired to my bed for a deep slumber.

The next morning, however, chaos erupted within the Duchy. I woke up to the sound of maids and servants rushing about with worried faces. "Edyth, what's happening?" I asked as Edyth dried my hair. "Young Lord Ethan is sick, Your Grace. Lord Elesten must have ordered the maids to bring some medicine for the Young Lord. Poor him!" Edyth's voice was laced with sympathy.

I quickly dressed and decided to visit Young Lord Ethan. As I entered his bedroom, I saw him lying in bed, looking pale and weak. "Lord Ethan, how are you? Poor thing, you're still a child to experience this much pain. Do you need something? Do you want me to get you your toys?" I sat beside his bed, holding his hand and looking at him with concern.

Young Lord Ethan's eyes welled up with tears. "Lady Wyrmsley, what are you doing here? You shouldn't see me like this. Mother and father will scold me again. They say that I shouldn't get sick because it will bring shame to the Duchy." His words broke my heart, reminding me of the former duke's cruel treatment of Claude.

To ease his pain, I decided to show him some simple magic tricks. "Lord Ethan, I'm going to show you another magic, so look closely." Green mist appeared in my hand, and soon green butterflies and birds began to appear, illuminating the room. Young Lord Ethan's eyes widened in wonder.

"You're still a child, my lord," I said, holding his hand. "Be a child, laugh as much as you want, be silly, be naughty sometimes, or cry if you want to cry. You're still a seven-year-old boy." My words seemed to resonate with him, and he began to cry.

"Waah, waah, Lady Wyrmsley, you're the first one besides Cele to console me. You're a kind person, My Lady." I hugged him tightly, offering comfort. "There, there, let's get it all out."

After Young Lord Ethan fell asleep, I rushed to the Duke's private office to speak with Lord Lance. As I entered, Lord Lance began to explain the situation. "Young Lord Ethan is going back to his adult form, Lady Wyrmsley. That fever is a symptom of the transformation. He will be back as Duke Claude by tomorrow."

I felt a surge of concern. "So Young Lord Ethan will have a fever in order for him to turn back into the Duke again? The process is quite painful. Why would..." Lord Lance's expression turned serious. "This is why the curse is dangerous for Duke Claude, Lady Wyrmsley. If he can't endure the fever, he might die because of it."
