The Duke Who Changes

Chapter 9: Back To Winter

Chapter 9: Back To Winter

Oct 04, 2025

In the Duke's private office, a tense conversation unfolded between Duke Claude and Lord Elesten. The air was thick with unspoken words, and the weight of their discussion hung precariously in the balance.

"Lance, you're suggesting that the curse was triggered by our argument that night, and Lady Celeste discovered it?" Duke Claude's serious expression reflected his concern, his eyes narrowing as he awaited Lord Elesten's response.

Lord Elesten nodded, his face set in a determined expression. "Yes, Your Grace. Given the situation, it's crucial we handle Lady Celeste carefully. If this gets out, the entire Cubresia Duchy will be humiliated, or worse, the Emperor might take action against us again."

Duke Claude's gaze turned icy, his eyes flashing with a hint of warning. "I'll make excuses to the royal palace and the people of the Duchy. This must not become public knowledge. Assign guards to Lady Celeste and have her observed. We need to know what she's thinking."

Lord Elesten's face twisted in frustration, his voice laced with urgency. "Your Grace, it's best to eliminate Lady Celeste now rather than risk her exposing our secret. Remember your marriage and the potential consequences."

Duke Claude's expression remained calm, but his eyes seemed to bore into Lord Elesten's very soul. "Baron Elesten, we've been friends for years, yet you still don't know me that well. I don't kill innocent people without proof of wrongdoing."

Lord Elesten's face fell, and he bowed, his voice barely above a whisper. "As you wish, Duke Claude." With a stiff nod, he exited the office, leaving Duke Claude alone with his thoughts.

Meanwhile, Lady Celeste and Edyth strolled through the Fyietzel Garden, surrounded by pink lavish flowers and black roses. The garden was a testament to Duke Claude's love for his late mother and his complicated feelings towards his father. The sun cast dappled shadows on the ground, and the scent of blooming flowers filled the air.

"Edyth, what should I do?" Lady Celeste asked, her brow furrowed in concern. "Should I go to his office or wait for him in our chambers?"

Edyth's eyes sparkled with excitement, her voice filled with romantic notions. "My lady, you should go tell His Grace in his office! Imagine the scene: you slowly open the door with a pitiful look, and he'll say, 'No, I'm waiting for you.' Then, a kiss will follow, and—"

Lady Celeste chuckled, interrupting Edyth's romantic fantasy. "That's an overexaggerated advice, Edyth. By the way, do you know a good boutique? I need a new dress for the banquet."

Edyth's expression turned serious, her voice filled with confidence. "You should go to Madame Eva's Boutique. She's a skilled seamstress, and her dresses are exquisite. Plus, she's familiar with your taste."

Lady Celeste's face reflected her nervousness, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm a bit anxious about the banquet, Edyth. I don't know how to interact with the other nobles."

Edyth's reassuring smile calmed Lady Celeste's nerves, her voice filled with conviction. "Don't worry, my lady. Just be yourself and think positively. If someone tries to hurt you, stand up for yourself."

As they conversed, Duke Claude appeared in the hallway, and Edyth urged Lady Celeste to approach him. With a deep breath, Lady Celeste walked towards Duke Claude, her heart racing with anticipation.

"Your Grace, I was wondering if you'd like to attend the banquet with me."

Duke Claude's expression softened, and he chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Very well, my lady. I shall attend the banquet with you."

Lady Celeste's face flushed with excitement, and she smiled, her heart racing with joy. "Thank you, Your Grace."

As she gazed into his red eyes, she felt a flutter in her chest. She couldn't help but notice the way his black hair swirled around his handsome face as he smiled, and she felt her blush deepen.
