There was a moment of silence in the depths of the forest before Keith's scream pierced his ears. Hendrik heard him shouting a string of curses and repeating the same words over and over, but he couldn't concentrate too much on what his best friend was trying to tell him; all his attention was focused on the sensation of his teeth breaking through the Omega's skin.
He exhaled through his nose as he felt the tissue tear under the force of his fangs, not knowing if the pressure he was applying was correct, or if the Omega would withstand another wound. Instinctively, he tightened his grip on the other's body and held him tightly, as if he wanted to become one with him, to merge and never have to live apart again.
His wolf howled inside him like never before, satisfied with his decisions and rejoicing in the feeling of bliss that overwhelmed his spirit.
Never in his entire life had he imagined that bonding with someone would feel like that.
His entire existence was filled with a sudden wave of pleasure and satisfaction that made his skin tingle. The despair and sadness he had experienced were quickly replaced by endless emotions that he never thought he would experience at the same time with such intensity.
Joy, bliss, happiness, love. For a second, Hendrik thought his heart would explode from so many conflicting feelings.
He felt like he was touching fucking heaven, but it didn't take long for him to fall into fucking hell.
He split apart as soon as his body was attacked by a sudden and explosive feeling of discomfort coming from the depths of his body. Every part, every limb, every bone, every muscle seemed to be being torn apart by a devastating torment.
He couldn't hold himself in a proper position for too long, forced to fall sideways onto the snow while barely aware of how the muscles in his bare back were contracting in a monstrous way, as if, suddenly, a sharp whip were hitting him over and over again.
As if the worst of demons were right there, mocking him, attacking him with its claws until it tore his skin off.
It's working. He thought in his agony, dizzy and barely able to breathe steadily. The bond is working, I feel the same as he does.
He couldn't believe it was really working. He had heard so many stories about bonds, his parents, his friends, they all seemed to have a different version of what it felt like to form a union.
His mother used to tell him that when an Alpha and an Omega bonded, a miracle occurred in nature that linked the feelings of both parts and formed a single shared soul. Bonding was considered sacred for their species, an act that occurred only once in a lifetime, which is why the union between their souls was beyond the understanding of any creature.
It is magical, she had told him when he was a young cub. Like the stories Dad and I always tell you before bedtime.
When you bond with someone, you must be so careful, my love. You're not just accepting their emotions, you're also accepting their feelings. Their joy will become yours, and their pain, of body and soul, will become your pain too. If your Omega suffers, you will too. It's part of a balance.
Fucking balance. He could feel the damn lashes on his own flesh. Every single one.
A pair of hands ended up holding him down to prevent his sudden movements from really hurting him, but it wasn't enough to lessen the pain at all; he couldn't stop writhing, the sensation was fucking scorching, burning his skin and penetrating deep into his bones. It was unbearable torture.
Hold on, hold on for him.
If he continued to sob, he wasn't aware of it; if he screamed until his vocal cords were torn, he couldn't feel it. Finally, the fire in his muscles began to gradually subside after what felt like an eternity. It was impossible for him to control the gasps that escaped from his parted lips. He couldn't move, with watery eyes and arms drained of energy at the sides of his body.
All the adrenaline from his previous mission had been absorbed in one fell swoop. He felt exhausted and sore, certain that he would lose consciousness at any moment.
No, he couldn't afford to give in to his weakness.
If he fainted, Keith would surely prioritize helping him and taking him home, desperate to rescue him and leaving the Omega who also needed them to fend for himself.
No. A soft, high-pitched voice crept into his troubled mind. It was just a broken whisper, filled with concern. Don't leave me.
His blurred vision traveled from side to side, finding the Omega's body inches away from him. He wanted to raise his hand and brush his cheek in a comforting gesture, but he didn't have the strength to move.
I won't. He promised, not knowing if he would be heard or not. I won't leave you.
“Hendrik Edward Zolvryck! What the hell did you do, you big idiot?!” Keith yelled somewhere around him, sounding genuinely distressed by the whole situation. “Edward 's gonna be furious! Have you lost your mind?! Your father's gonna have a heart attack!”
Edward... What would his father say about the whole thing? Keith was right, he would surely be furious and yell at them both for hours, maybe even end up punishing them.
After all, Hendrik had surely just broken the most important rule of the pack.
Shit, he could even be exiled for it.
Keith continued yelling and cursing at him until Hendrik mustered enough courage to speak. His throat burned, and his voice was barely audible, a broken, deep whisper.
“ We're taking him home...” he murmured. Keith opened his mouth to object, but stopped when he realized how much effort it took for his friend to utter those simple words.
“H-help me up, and I'll carry him.”
“You've really lost your damn mind,” the wolf replied incredulously. “How the hell are we going to get him home?! Shit, Alexander is going to kill you... he'll kill you and then come after me, you just doomed us, you fucking lunatic.”
Oh, Alexander. Yes, he would be a little upset too.
Even though his friend's words were true, he couldn't think clearly at that moment. He felt as if his head was about to explode, and the pain in his limbs was so severe that he couldn't even imagine how difficult it would be to conserve a little energy on his way home.
He was confused and disoriented, yet there was one thought in his head that kept repeating itself over and over again.
A single phrase that felt right in his spirit, one that had been running through his mind from the second he heard that Omega cry for help.
“Keith... I found him,” he said in a low, calm voice, immediately catching the attention of the opposing Alpha, who gave him a look full of confusion.
“What?”
A lazy, single-dimpled smile spread across Hendrik's lips.
The war between wolves and humans is far from over. Wolves are strong, brave, warriors by nature. But humans are consumed by hatred and a dark desire for revenge, and that makes them a highly dangerous enemy.
Many have died, many will die. Nothing will be as it was before. Here, there are no dreams, there is no hope.
