“Mommy! Mommy, Mommy!” The little cub ran until he reached his mother’s lap. His short arms stretched out and a dimpled smile adorned his chubby baby face.
“What's wrong, my baby?” The Omega looked at him with a smile of her own. Her gaze overflowed with love, and every delicate feature of her face showed the happiness she felt when she met the excited eyes of her cub.
“Can Meredith and I go play with Keith and the other wolves, Mommy?”
Hendrik was nothing more than a spectator to that sweet moment.
Standing in the distance, he could admire the beauty of the creature who gave him life.
She tenderly stroked the chocolate hair of a young version of himself and showered sweet kisses on his milky skin. He brought his fingers to his cheek when he saw her kiss that area on the cub's face, eager to feel the caress of her lips again, the love in her every action.
“Play with the other wolves?” The Omega pretended to think about it, wrinkling her nose in a cute grimace that the little baby imitated without realizing it. “Do you promise to take care of your sister, Hennie?”
“Yes, Mommy! I always take care of her.”
Hendrik's eyes filled with tears. He took another step closer, silently begging for it all to end.
Please. He pleaded in a hoarse whisper, his hands clenched into fists, his body shaking as he gave in to each broken sob. Please go away, they're close.
Neither of them could hear him. He watched as the Omega lost herself in the tenderness of her little one, in showing him all the love she felt for him, unable to perceive the danger that was drawing ever closer.
Dad. He thought. Dad, do something, help us.
But he knew it was useless, he knew his father had gone out with the hunters that morning. Neither Alexander nor Matthew were close enough to get there in time, there was no one who could prevent what was coming.
No one could help them. And he, so small and helpless, could do nothing to save his mother.
“Mom!” he finally cried out, overcome with grief and despair. His voice choked with each heartbroken sob. “Mom, run!” he pleaded, trembling. “They're coming for us! They're going to kill you!”
She didn't answer.
Hendrik fell to his knees, reliving the moment when the monsters took the Omega's life in front of him and in front of a pair of innocent emerald eyes.
The war between wolves and humans is far from over. Wolves are strong, brave, warriors by nature. But humans are consumed by hatred and a dark desire for revenge, and that makes them a highly dangerous enemy.
Many have died, many will die. Nothing will be as it was before. Here, there are no dreams, there is no hope.
