“This is my chance, my one and only chance. The only chance I have to be more than me! A real friend wouldn't mess that up. You really are a traitor!”
-Isaac
Savio and Rosalind are not pleased that Isaac chose this time to show off his remains. Rebecca Ansolm is dead and so is Ebner Beiler. They’re depending on the festival to draw in visitors and provide more puppet demon material. Dimitri warns the Gennaris that they’re looking to resurrect a complete stranger, someone with dreams/memories that aren’t true, an arm bone that was never broken in childhood, and a willingness to forgive. The Isaac in the Lost Boy wax doll is a fake. The Gennaris force Dimitri back to the Beiler neighborhood where Isaac turns on him. He is indeed Isaac Gennari and anyone who says no will be drowned in wax.
The uproar summons a freshly revived Nil who sends Isaac running in tears to Rosalind. Her mirrors trap Nil and Dimitri in visions of the past, but it’s Rosalind herself who’s driven to madness by them. She madly denies the visions of Isaac suffering at the hands of his parents’ neglect. It’s not true that he was hounded by Rebecca Ansolm to pursue art even though he had neither the desire nor the talent for it. His friendship with another boy was a godsend for the lonely boy. Dimitri couldn’t have angered Isaac so badly that the latter cut off their friendship for good. According to the mirrors the torment of Isaac Gennari ended--or was supposed to have ended--with his death from consumption.
Armed with magic tools and a contract with the dead, Nil arrives in the glamorous city of Harz to find the family that he lost. By day the local citizens happily prepare for their annual art festival, but by night their displays come to life in order to steal their dreams. Death awaits those who dare to interfere, but that’s not a problem for Nil in more ways than one.
