Non-binary is fine, but this is just confusing writing -- and it's going to get waaaay more confusing when you aren't using a single panel image of the person you're referencing. Perhaps you'll never reference them in narration again, so you won't have to hurdle this. But just be mindful that this was hella confusing to read. Better to just use the character's name. "They/they're" works a lot better in dialog than it does in narrative prose.
