It was a dark night. An eight year old girl was watching her mother cook. This young girl's name is Polly.
"What are you cooking mommy?" Polly asked
"I'm making chili hun." Her mother, Summer replied, "You're Daddy's favorite."
"Yay! I can't wait until he gets here!" Polly says excitedly.
Summer turned and smiled at her daughter. "It's just about ready."
There was suddenly a loud banging on the door. Summer looks at it wide eyed.
"Who is it?!" She asked in a panic.
The banging just continues. Polly goes and hides behind her mother, "Mommy, I'm scared."
"Don't worry sweetie." Summer told her.
The door breaks and a couple of guys come in holding a beaten up man. Another guy follows in behind them. Polly sees the beaten man and gasped.
"Daddy!" She screamed.
Summer looks at her husband, "Joel, what's going on?!" She asked.
Joel looks up to the man that had arrived behind the others. "Leroy….please….not them…." he begged.
"You haven't given me my payment!" Leroy snapped at Joel.
"I'll get you the money! Just please don't hurt them!" Joel begged.
"Too late." Leroy said as he took out a gun and shot Joel in the head.
"JOEY/DADDY!" Summer and Polly screamed.
Leroy looks at Summer and then at his two henchman. "Get the bitch." He ordered.
The two nodded and they go and start beating up on Summer. Polly looks angry in tears and runs upstairs. Leroy smirks and follows her. He sees a door shut and goes into the room.
"Little girl, where are you?" He asked in a creepy voice.
Polly jumps out of nowhere and whacks Leroy in the face with a bat knocking him down. Leroy holds the part of his face that was hit and growls. "You little bitch!" He snapped.
"Stay away from my parents!" Polly growled.
Leroy smirks and kicks Polly in the leg. Polly falls down. Leroy stands above her.
"Wanna play games with me little bitch?" He asked as he takes out a container that contains some type of liquid. "I'll show you!" He throws the little into her face. Polly screams in pain as Leroy laughs sadistically.
A few hours later Polly and her mom were at the hospital where Polly's face was covered up and a boy her age ran into the room. It was her best friend, Filbert.
"POLLY!" Filbert screamed as he ran to Polly's side. "Please be okay, please be okay." He starts to cry.
Filbert's parents look saddened and see Summer who got treatment herself next to them. She looks at them and then back at her daughter.
"It'll be okay Polly...it'll be okay…."
12 Years Later
Polly was walking back to her room in college. She breathed through the gas mask she always wore ever since that night. Filbert was by her side. He looked at her.
"I think it's safe to...you know...take it off." Filbert said.
Polly just breathes through her mask again.
"Or not." Filbert sighed. He had been trying to get his best friend to take off that mask for years. There was nothing wrong with her. She had that burn but she had a heart of gold and that's what counted. He always hated the thought of being calling Polly a freak. She wasn't a freak. They were the freaks. "Did you talk to Megan today?"
"Yeah." Polly replied, "She's busy doing stuff. What about Henry?"
"Busy hitting the gym." Filbert said, "So I guess it's just you and me studying."
"Alright then." Polly said as she walked up to the door of her room. She opened the door and walked in. Filbert followed her.
"So you're really not gonna take off your mask?" Filbert asked.
"Filbert, I told you, I can't show the world my face." Polly said.
"But there's nothing wrong with it." Filbert said.
Polly turned to him. Even though she had the mask on Filbert could tell she was giving him a look.
"Well you can at least take it off in here like you normally do." Filbert said.
Polly turned around and took off her mask. She placed it down and turned to Filbert.
"It's not bad." Filbert told her.
"It is Filbert." Polly sighed, "Look can we just get off of this and study."
"Sure but….can I try on your mask?" Filbert asked.
"...What?" Polly asked.
"Can I try on your mask?" Filbert asked again.
"Why do you want to try on my mask?" Polly asked him.
"I just wanna see what it's like in there." Filbert told her.
"Fine." Polly said grabbing the mask and handing it to him. Filbert put it on and looked at her.
"Hey this is pretty cool." Filbert said. He breathed through the mask. Polly shook her head and chuckled. Filbert looked around. He looked towards the window when he spotted something. A silhouette was leaning against the window. Filbert gasped and turned. He was even more shocked at what he saw next.
It was him. It was Leroy. His clothes were torn and he was right behind Polly. Filbert screamed.
"What's wrong?!" Polly asked in shock.
"There's someone at the window and some guy is behind you!" Filbert yelled.
"Wait...you see it too?" Polly asked.
Filbert looked at her and took off the mask. He noticed something strange. Leroy wasn't there anymore. He handed the mask back to Polly.
"Polly, what's going on?" Filbert asked, "Who was that guy?"
"That guy that you saw is Leroy." Polly said putting the mask back on, "Everytime I put on the mask I see him. For the first few years it was fine but then he just started to appear. He taunts me all the time. The only time I don't see him is when I don't have the mask on. I either keep the mask on and see his ghost or I don't and have everyone call me names."
"Polly…." Filbert said. He couldn't believe this. All this time the one thing that was seemingly keeping Polly sane was also causing her pain? "W-What is he doing now?"
"He's behind you...waving and grinning at me." Polly said.
