In a deep pit, stands four treasure hunters staring at an old wooden box with disappointment. The box sat opened with nothing more than an old book and spider webs.
"DAMN IT!" Harold shouts as he slams his shovel on the ground with anger written all over his face.
"Harold, chill dube." Andre says, patting his shoulder.
"CHILL?! Do you know how long we have been searching for this box for? It's been months! We didn't spend all that time searching for a damn box!" Harold shouts as he punches the wall of dirt in the pit.
"He's right, Andre. We are looking for treasures. Not a book." Amias says in a calm, down tone.
"I mean you never know this book could be a treasure." Andre says as he picks up the book from the box.
"Give me that!" Harold says, grabbing the book from Andre's hand.
"Careful! It can still be worth something." Andre says as he watches Harold flipping the pages of the book back and forth.
"I don't see it. It's just a book full of some writing." Harold comments while closing the book.
"I think it could be written in Linear A." Li says looking at the writing on the cover.
"Li, I know you're the one who figured out the location for junk by doing a lot of math, but I don't think this is anything to do with math." Harold says while squatting down.
"Not that. Linear A is the Minoan language" Li comments.
"Then can you read what this book says?" Amias asks.
"Not at all, but we can probably sell it for something." Li says.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go and sell this junk." Harold shouts as he climbs up the stairs.
The treasure hunters climbed out of the pit and began to fill it with dirt. Once they pat down the dirt where the pit once was, they threw their shovels into the back of their black pickup truck and drove back to the closest major city on the map, Bilbao.
"Andre. Why are we heading to Bilbao?" Li asks.
"Well, besides the fact that it's the closest place from here. I've messaged a friend who might be able to identify what this book is about."
"Well as long as it's worth something, it'll be worth the run." Harold comments.
The treasure hunters drove into the city of avant architecture and rich gastronomy, and further towards the less touristy area of the city.
"There he is" Andre points at a middle aged man in a white collar shirt, black suit pants, suit shoes, and blue tie.
"Are you sure that's the guy? I mean he looks like some kind of official or office worker." Amias staring at the man.
"Ya. Ignore the way he dresses. He says that way it looks more official or so I quote."
"Well then what are we waiting for, let's go." Harold says, jumping out of the truck.
Andre walks to the well dressed gentleman, "Kate. Surprised to see you here in Bilbao."
"Well I was on vacation until you gave me that call." Kate says, crossing his legs.
"You're on vacation dressed like that?"
"You have to be prepared for everything. Even work in the middle of vacation."
"I wouldn't."
"Well enough chit chat. Show me the artifact you guys dug up."
Li hands over the book to Kate. Kate took a glance at the cover and began carefully flipping through the book.
"Looking at the book it seems to be written in linear A. Am I correct?"
"Why are you asking us? Aren't you the expert?" Harold snorts at Kate.
“There’s a small issue.”
“What’s the issue?” Amias asks.
“Well, paper was invented around 2000 years ago and linear A was created almost 4000 years ago and not long after it was replaced by linear B. So you can get where I’m coming from then, you see the issue.”
“First just make it clear with us. How much is it worth”
“It’s not worth much is it. Probably worth almost nothing unless the context in the book is legitimate. Am I right?” Li asks.
“Well I wouldn't say anything, you can probably sell this for scrap paper. But to be completely honest with you I am unsure whether this is real or not, since linear A is mostly undefined. I’ll tell you that if this book is real then you guys have discovered something that is invaluable.” Kates says as he hands the book back to Andre.
“Why is that?” Amias asks.
“Well, for all we know this could be a missing piece of human history. That itself is what would make this so valuable but unless you can prove this book is real, its current value I would say is like a gram of silver or something.”
“How much is a gram of silver?” Harold asks.
“I would say a bit more than one euro.” Amias answer.
“Then it has to be a fake then. It should not be possible for paper to last for that long, even if it does it should be fragile and easily broke” Li murmurs as he flips through the pages of the book.
“It could be but the existing linear A in the book matches the existing linear A that has been translated. The only way this could be possible is if they created a material similar to stone paper for this to still be around today.” Kate says while pointing at the book.
“OKAY OKAY OKAY. Enough of your nerdy conversation. If it’s fake just throw it out and we’ll just look for some other treasures or something.” Harold said loudly.
The rest went silent with only the sound of Li flipping through the pages of the book, one page at a time until he turned to a page with a largely drawn symbol of a line circling a dot.
“Guys we may just have hit the jackpot.” Li says quietly and he walks towards the car.
“What are you guys waiting for? Get in!” Li shouts.
