Beyond The Notes

Intro Melody: Rinko Aoyama

Intro Melody: Rinko Aoyama

May 01, 2025

Rinko Aoyama — or Rin, as her parents affectionately call her — was just a little girl when she stumbled upon something that would change her life forever.

After witnessing countless arguments between her parents, Rin's world grew quiet and small. She stopped talking, stopped going outside. Day after day, she shut herself in her room, accompanied only by silence... and tears no one else could hear.

But one seemingly ordinary afternoon, something extraordinary happened.

While helping tidy up a small storage room at the back of the house, Rin discovered an old guitar. It was dusty, forgotten, wrapped in cobwebs and time. Its strings were dull, its body faded with age.

Her mother told her the guitar had once belonged to Rin’s grandfather — a remnant of his youth. And to Rin, it wasn’t just an object. There was something about the curves of the wood, the way the fading sunlight caught its surface, that spoke to her.

“Mom, can I take this to my room?” she asked softly, eyes sparkling. “I really like it.”

Her mother nodded with a gentle smile, watching as a small spark lit up inside her daughter.

“Thank you, Mom!” Rin exclaimed before dashing to her room, holding the old guitar close like it was something precious.

She tried to strum it, even though the sounds were rough and clumsy. Her fingers fumbled. And then — twang! — the second string snapped, catching her cheek.

Rin froze, stunned. But instead of crying… she laughed.

“Where do I even find a wire like this?” she mumbled to herself. It was her first time seeing a guitar up close. She had no idea where to get a new string.

Unbeknownst to her, her father was standing outside her door, quietly watching with a warm smile on his face.

The guitar’s body almost dwarfed her tiny frame. One string was gone, and her playing was out of tune and unsteady. But she didn’t stop. She kept strumming, lost in the wonder of it all.

Eventually, she fell asleep with the guitar still in her arms. Her father tiptoed into the room, gently moved the instrument aside, pulled the blanket over her small body, and kissed her forehead.

“Good night, sweetheart,” he whispered, turning off the light as he left the room.

---

The next morning, Rin woke to a commotion downstairs. She glanced at the clock — 6:11 a.m.

Still groggy, hair tousled and eyes barely open, she climbed out of bed and shuffled toward the stairs, rubbing her eyes as she went.

Downstairs, her father was busy with something at the dining table. Next to him was a small, neatly wrapped brown box.

“Morning, Rin,” he greeted her with a smile.

Rin gave a sleepy nod, but her gaze soon locked onto the box.

“This… is for you,” he said, sliding it gently toward her.

Curious, Rin unwrapped it. Her eyes widened in disbelief.

Inside was a full set of new guitar strings.

“I saw you playing Grandpa’s guitar yesterday... The string broke, didn’t it?” he chuckled softly.

Rin hugged the little box to her chest. Her sleepy face lit up with a bright, beaming smile.

“Thank you, Dad…” she whispered.

Her father ruffled her hair. “Go on, change the string, and keep practicing. Grandpa would be proud to see you carry on his spirit.”

Without another word, Rin ran back to her room.

She placed the string box beside her bed and carefully picked up her grandfather’s old guitar.

Her fingers shook as she tried to replace the broken string. She messed up several times.

“Ugh… this is so hard,” she pouted.

But after a few more tries, she finally managed to secure the new string.

Rin gazed at the guitar with shining eyes. She sat cross-legged on the floor, cradled the instrument, and began strumming — randomly, clumsily, joyfully.

The sounds were messy. The rhythm didn’t make sense. Her tiny fingers struggled to press the frets.

But Rin smiled anyway.

Every odd sound sparked her curiosity. Her heart beat in time with every vibration.

From outside her room, there came a soft knock.

Knock knock knock.

“Sweetheart?” Her mother’s voice followed, then the door creaked open.

Rin was still lost in her guitar. It took her a few minutes to even notice.

“Mom…”

“You’re really into it, huh?”

Rin looked up and gave a shy grin. “Hehe…”

“Come on, time to get ready for school,” her mother said, walking over to help her prepare her uniform and bag. “You can play more after you get home.”

Rin didn’t complain. She grabbed her towel and dashed off to the bathroom.

Her mother watched her go, smiling to herself.

Her little girl was no longer the silent, lonely child from before.

She had found her melody.

"When the world feels too harsh to face, I find a small voice inside my heart —
a voice that whispers through the strum of strings,
through the beat of drums,
through the trembling notes of piano keys."

Rin isn’t looking for a grand stage or thunderous applause.
She only longs for one place…
a place where she is accepted, even in her silence.

Leo, Aya, and Sora — each carry invisible scars.
They’re not perfect.
They don’t know what the future holds.
But together, they create a new melody:

a melody of friendship, betrayal, hope… and first love.

Yet every beautiful song must come to an end.

When dreams collide, when fear silences the music,
will they still walk in harmony?

Or...

will it all end in silence?

"Behind the Notes" — a story of losing your way, finding your light,
and singing the final song… together.
