Oz
Hunger scratched at my stomach, snapping its teeth with a growl. I licked my dry lips, glancing briefly at the nurse dressed in a red uniform. Her brunette hair tied back in a fashionable bun, and her gloved hands reached for the document.
"Sir," she said softly, "I need you to sign here."
I take the pen and paper from her. Signing my name with a shaky hand. I look back up to her, her kind lavender eyes smiling down at me. "Is that all?" I ask her, managing to keep the tremor out of my voice.
"Yes," she responds. Taking the documents away from me, the nurse walks towards the door. Heels clicking with each step. "I'll send in your receiver in a moment. Thank you for your donation, sir."
I give her a short nod of my head. Keeping my gaze on the spotless floor. I could hear the door close, her clicking going further down the halls. A breath escapes my lungs that I didn't know I was holding. My heart beating rapidly, making me slightly lightheaded.
The ticking of the clock let me know the time as I stared at the pale walls. My fingers twirling impatiently in my lap. I tried to calm my spinning nerves by taking deep breaths, closing my eyes.
But before I could put my heart at ease. There was a knocking at the door, making me flinch in my seat. "Mister Sarin?" The nurse asked, peeping her head into the room, "May I bring in your receiver now?"
"Yes," I answered her. She stepped back inside the room, behind her a scrawny man. His bone joints stuck out in awkward places, and his dark hair, untrimmed, making it fall into his pale face. But what made me stare at him even more, is the strawberry birthmark that went around his violet eye.
I must've looked as much as a mess to this guy. "Mister Sarin, this is Harper Sampson. He's going to be your regular for the next six months." The nurse went over to me, handing me a remote with only one button. "Only--and I mean only--if Mister Sampson makes you think that your life is threatened in any way. Understand?"
I nodded my head, taking the remote carefully. "Thank you, Miss." I said to her.
She sighed, going back to the door. "Mister Sampson will explain how this works, I have to attend another patient. Your check in on the table when you're finished." She turned over to Mister Sampson with a glare, "Don't fuck up this time Harper!"
My eyes widened at her sharp words, and Harper gave her finger guns.
"I try!" He responded. The nurse rolled her eyes, walking out of the room. Leaving Harper and me by ourselves, making me his center of attention (I don't really think I want it). "So ..." he drawled, "This your first time?"
I started to cough on the air. "Pardon?" I asked him once I regained my breath.
He pulled his lips back in a smirk, revealing his enlarged canines. "Your first time donating blood?"
"Yeah." I answered, turning my eyes back to the clock. He plopped himself down in the chair next to me.
"What's your name?"
"Oz," I tried to sit up straiter in my seat. "Oswyn actually, but I don't really--it doesn't matter." I shook my head before I could blabber any more nonsense to him.
"Oz?" Harper laughed, his purple eyes crinkling with his smile. "I'm Harper. Aggie is normally like that. A cunt."
My eyebrows went up in shock, "The nurse?"
"Yep, she's my distant relative." They don't really look alike, I thought. "Now, do you want to start the process?"
My gut growled, and I wrapped an arm around my stomach. "Uh, I guess."
He grabbed my free arm. Placing it on the armrest. "Can I roll up the sleeve?" I nodded my head, feeling my face warm up. Harper chuckled, "No need to be so nervous. Relax kiddo."
He looks just as old as me. I don't say anything about it.
He traced his cold finger up and down my wrist, making goosebumps erupt down my back. "I'm feeling for a vein, just making sure I don't bite the wrong spot." His eyes go to my face, "You're pretty quiet. Scared or something?"
"A little." I admit to him, feeling my heartbeat swiftly. "Do you just bite or ..."
Harper shrugged, "That's the normal way to do it. It's less messy. But some people prefer that we use knives. I can if you want." I shook my head, it's bad enough that I'm giving this guy my blood, I don't need him to cut me.
"I'm fine with the biting."
Harper raised his hands in surrender. "Please understand that when vampires, when I, drink your blood. I'll go into this kind of ... mode."
"Mode?"
"Yeah, I'll say something I don't really mean. Don't take me seriously after I drink your blood." He gently grabbed my hand, exposing my wrist. "I'm going to bite now, okay?" I nodded my head, closing my eyes.
His teeth lightly grazed my skin, sending tingles up my arm. I could feel Harper pull back his head, I cracked open an eye. "Is something wro--ah!"His teeth broke the skin, searing pain made me try to pull back my arm.
But what is a human's strength compared to vampires? Harper held down my arm in place, I could feel my head get lighter with each passing second. I thought about reaching for the remote, but I think this is how they normally feed.
Right?
When Harper was finished, he lapped up the remaining blood on my irritated wrist. "That was amazing!" He groaned, tilting his head back. "I'll give you a thousand if I can take you to my house."
"I don't need your money," I muttered, rolling down my sleeve. Pulling away from him, as I collected the check on the counter.
He raised his eyebrow in disbelief, "Don't you?"
The devil on my shoulder reminded me that the money is needed. And I would get a lot more out of him if I went.
I nodded my head. Selling my soul.
