Nick could feel beams of sunlight pounding on his face as he heard his blinds being opened.
"Late" An unknown voice spoke, "Get out of bed Nick." Nick recognized the voice as his twin sister, Jacklyn.
"Too early to wake up" He replied, barely.
Jacklyn strolled over to Nick's bed side and shook him to try to wake him up.
"You seriously need an alarm clock dude, just something to wake you up." She complained, "You've got like 15 minutes until you need to leave for school."
"Wait Really?!" Nick exclaimed as he jumped out of bed, throwing together whatever kind of clothes he could find laying around his untidy room. He tried to grab all his homework he left lying on his desk last night when he tried to finish it, but got distracted by who knows what. Finally, Nick made it out the door with less than a minute to spare.
"Jeez, you look one heck of a mess." Nick's best friend, Ashley responded after taking a good look at him.
"You really know how to let it off easy don't you Ash." Nick sarcastically replied.
"That's what best friends are for dude, anyway did you over sleep again?" Ashley questioned Nick.
Nick sadly shook his head in response, he knew what he had coming for him. He was gonna get yet another lecture on why he should get an alarm clock to prevent his oversleeping, so he doesn't look like a total mess when he comes to school in the morning.
Nick hated these lectures with a burning passion, he knew he should get an alarm clock, he's heard people tell him that over a million times before. He just doesn't get why it's repeated over and over and over again. Why waste your time reminding him of his needs when you can remind yourself of your needs?
"Fiiine, I'll get an alarm clock tonight if it gets you to shut up." Nick grudgingly replied after he estimated Ash was done with her lecture.
"I wasn't done. Nick you're in the eleventh grade you should be able to wake yourself up and still be on time!"
Nick wanted to scream at her to stop, he loved Ash but he hated these constant lectures that he gets everyday. He could even bet money on whether or not he was going to get a lecture from his mother when he went home just by how late he got up. He was sick and tired of these dumb lectures and he needed a way to get out of them, so maybe the alarm clock idea isn't too bad after all.
"So which one do you want?' Ash asked Nick eager to stop lecturing him over getting an alarm clock. The constant reminders were starting to annoy her too, even though she was the one giving them.
"One that's not too annoying but will also get my up on time." Nick replied.
As Nick scanned each clock his eyes landed on a simple looking black one with a red button near the outside. He liked the look of the clock and it looked like one that wouldn't annoy him or his siblings too much.
"This one." Nick said out loud, but mostly too himself.
"All right, go buy it." Ash said, proud of her friend.
She watched him awkwardly walk up to the cash register and talk to the lady standing behind the desk. Nick shuffled back with a bag in his hand that had the object he needed to stop the dreaded lectures. He felt like he was in a video game and he had just completed a really hard objective or obstacle that rarely any players finished. This clock was the start of his new future, a future filled with no boring lectures! All Nick had to do was set it up.
"How do I set this thing up?" Nick asked to himself.
"You're taking honors classes but you don't know how to set up a stupid alarm clock?" Jacklyn sassily replied.
"Look I'm not Einstein can you just help me?" Nick asked trying his best not to be sarcastic, and failing.
"You know, there are directions for a reason Nick." Jacklyn replied, her sassy side showing even more.
Nick pulled out the directions and tried to figure out what he was even reading, it was all gibberish and the pictures didn't even make sense of what he was doing!
"This is just a bunch of random letters with pictures that doesn't make sense!"
"How bad?"
"They look like a two year old drew them, and that's a compliment."
Jacklyn leaned in for a closer look, she had no trouble figuring out what the paper had written on it.
"Oh, this is French." Jacklyn remarked.
"For?"
"The instructions? Look, I'm gonna go downstairs, use a translator app to help you with this." Jacklyn said, jumping off the top bunk of the bunk bed they shared.
Since Nick was too lazy to get on his phone and simply download an app to his phone he decided to call Ashley over to his house because she was taking French for her language class during high school. Ashley, having nothing better to do came over relatively quickly considering how far away she lived from Nick's house.
The two spent the whole night trying to figure out what the heck the directions were even trying to say that, by the time it was midnight they had officially had the clock on and running but not on the correct date or time. They spent another two hours studying the poor excuse for pictures and words on the direction sheet.
