AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
The sounds of my own scream woke me. My ears were ringing from the noise and my lips were parched. I closed my mouth. It was dry, and barely had any moisture left.
Was this… sand?
I coughed and tried to spit it out without much success. Everything felt so dry… and my whole body felt like it was burning. Where was I?
Slowly, I opened my eyes only to quickly shut them again at the sudden brightness.
I tried again, lifting my arm to shield myself from the blinding light. My vision took some time to get used to the brightness, but soon enough I was able to see…
Sand.
All I could see was sand. Above me the sun blazed hot and intense.
Where was I?
I couldn’t remember where I was supposed to be… however this didn’t seem quite right.
Sighing tiredly, I stood up and tried shaking some of the sand away from my skin and clothes.
No matter. Time to find a way out of this nightmare.
Using my hand as a cover, I tried to get a better look at my surroundings. The heat was distorting the air above the sand, creating wave-like motions. Squinting, I thought I could see some faint green on the horizon. That was the only cue I needed to start moving forward. So I walked…
I walked a lot.
Regardless of the distance I walked, the scenery around me barely seemed to change. Some rocks, a weed, a cactus. Was that a lizard? Maybe not. I dared not try and catch it anyway, I was too tired.
It felt like ages, days or even months. My feet were aching from the burning sand and all I could focus on was the heat, smothering me. The sun was so intense that I could still feel the brightness through my closed eyelids. My heart was pounding as my chest seemed to grow tighter and tighter. My breathing was laboured as the hot air felt like slime clogging my airway. I was suffocating!
Am I going to die here?
Thump thump. Thump… thump.
Slowly my heart beat calmed down, and I regained my breath. The sand burned where my knees had been grazed from the fall. I wanted to cry but my eyes were too dry to shed tears.
There MUST be a way out...
I stood up and pressed on.
