The world had changed...and so had the sounds that filled the town-once playful chuckles and laughters, now guttural cries.
The streets once open to all, were now divided along a line of power; and this power was determined by the family you took birth in. A group of people was punished for the sins of their ancestors and was constantly ridiculed for taking birth in 'that kind of family.' They were known as...The Ungifted.
Seo Nayeon, who was standing at her doorstep, carrying a girl in her arms, looked at the devastated surroundings as a sheen of tears glazed her eyes. The place that used to be bustling, now looked even worse than hell! "There's nothing left to save!" she said, while gently caressing the girl, she was carrying, "What even is this?! A curse? I had never imagined that one day, I'll have to see this place in such a miserable condition."
Wiping her tears, Nayeon walked into her house, and set the girl on the bed. She still couldn't stop looking at the destroyed place from the window, trying to believe it's not a nightmare.
Just then, her daughter, Mi-sook walked towards her and rested a hand on her shoulder, "Eomma, we don't have time to cry over what happened! Just look at the girl...She's severely injured. We need to treat her injuries first! You're not just my mother, eomma. They call you the 'Mother of the helpless', right? So please, save her!"
The girl's injuries instantly made Nayeon zone out from what she was thinking about. "Oh God!" said Nayeon as she engaged herself in treating the girl's injuries with Mi-sook, "I can't even imagine what she has been through! These wounds seem to be quite painful!"
Suddenly, a groan tore out of the girl's throat, as a breath escaped from her nostrils and her fingers fidgeted against the bedsheet. Nayeon and Mi-sook sighed. "She's waking up!" said Nayeon, moving her hand across the girl's forehead, her voice loaded with relief. The wounded girl, then, opened her eyes, slowly, and looked at Nayeon and Mi-sook in astonishment. Her trembling hands picked up a vase kept on the table nearby, "Don't try to touch me! Why did you bring me here?!"
Nayeon hugged the girl slightly and affectionately, and said, "No one's going to harm you, dear! I found you lying wounded in the nearby area, and brought you to my home. What's your name?"
The girl hesitated for a moment "Lim Bo-ra...", she replied, as she looked at the bandages, Nayeon and Mi-sook had binded her injuries with, "Thank you for treating my injuries."
The war between the two factions had ruined the lives of many people like Bo-ra. One of these factions was the Ungifted, while the other one was the Gifted. In the new society, the superiority and power was in the hands of the Gifted.
Mi-sook grinned and leaned closer to Bo-ra, "Hope you're feeling better now! Anyway, we know that you're an Ungifted. But don't worry! This is Seo Nayeon's house. This place is meant to provide protection to the ones who are abandoned or devastated by the war. Here, we don't believe in that Gifted-Ungifted drama! You're safe!"
Bo-ra froze, her gaze darted between Nayeon's gentle and reassuring grin, and Mi-sook's friendly one. "You guys are not Gifted, right?" she said in a trembling voice. Mi-sook snickered and replied, "Does it even matter? I don't think it does." Bo-ra stressed a bit, but Nayeon affectionately placed a hand on hers, comfort her. "We are." she said, smiling, "But, my girl, we don't think it's necessarry for us to live like the Gifted. Now, go and get changed. We'll be having lunch in a few minutes. And please...Don't even dare to say no! I am doin what I think is right, and I definitely don't need your permission or opinion for the same!"
The story follows the division of the society into two factions-The Ungifted and the Gifted. The Gifted ruled with power and might, while, the Ungifted were treated like Outcasts. After a war broke out between the two factions, a 13 year old orphan girl, named Lim Bo-ra was kicked out of her orphanage, which was run by a Gifted woman. Her life hit the rock bottom. Homeless and helpless, she endures oppression wherever she goes. However, after 2 miserable years, she finds refuge in a shelter, meant for the protection of innocent escapees and refugees. The shelter was ran by Seo Nayeon, known to many as the mother of the helpless. Three years passed. Things got much better. Also, fate throws her into the lives of two powerful Gifted kids—Yujin Dong-jae—who lost their parents in the war. Bo-ra decides to raise them as an older sister. But soon enough, a new problem arised. As Dong-jae and Yujin grew up, zombie community emerged, and for some reason, Dong-jae and Yujin were one of their 'Targets'. Bo-ra tries to protect the kids, but she herself gets hijacked by the community. Dong-jae and Yujin, now older and stronger, risk everything to find her.
