Road to Soda

The Arrow in the Alley

The Arrow in the Alley

May 31, 2025

Tokyo City, Inside a Black Sedan

In the middle of Tokyo’s evening rush, a black sedan slid smoothly through traffic. Three people were inside. One was a silent driver up front. The other two sat in the back — a young man and woman, both in their late teens.

The boy, Akira Fujikami, had messy black hair and a serious, reserved demeanor. He was focused on a stack of documents in his lap. Across from him, Emi Nozomi, an intelligent and sharp-tongued girl with bright orange hair and an easily irritable expression, casually browsed through another set of files.

Akira suddenly pulled one out and handed it to her.

“Take a look at this one. Something’s not right here,” he said, his tone low and serious.

Emi barely looked at the file before rolling her eyes.

“You’re thinking too much again. It’s probably just a kid playing a prank. Don’t waste time on it.”

But Akira shook his head.

“This boy went to the police. Said he was seeing things no one else could. They sent him to a hospital. Doctors examined everything — scans, tests — and reported him completely healthy.”

That made Emi pause for a moment.

“Huh… Alright, separate his file. We’ll take a look later. Right now, we have to reach the office and finish the data reports.”

High School Classroom, Afternoon

After the last period, the classroom was filled with chatter as students laughed, stretched, and packed their bags. Among them sat Kaito, a teenage boy with dark red hair and striking green eyes. Known for being overconfident and extroverted, his usual spark was dulled by frustration.

He tried again to explain to a few classmates.

“I’m serious. I can see things — things no one else notices.”

But no one believed him. They either ignored him or dismissed it with mockery. Once the final bell rang, students filtered out. Kaito packed quietly and left school alone.

Streets, Evening

On his walk home, Kaito felt a strange sensation — like someone was watching him. He looked around cautiously.

Someone’s following me...

He changed direction, cutting through a different alley. But it didn’t help.

Wait. There were two footsteps just now... now there’s a second one?

Panic set in.

No. I need to get away.

He picked up his pace. But no matter how fast he tried to move, he wasn’t fast enough.

Why can’t I outrun them?

Realizing escape was useless, Kaito turned around, ready to fight bare-handed. But before he could throw a punch, one of the figures grabbed him, and the other stuck a large syringe into his neck.

He struggled, but his limbs felt weak.

What… is this…?

Then suddenly, the ground beneath them began to ripple like water, as if reality was being twisted.

Out of nowhere, an arrow flew in and forced the two attackers to jump back. The arrow spun mid-air and curved in a perfect 180-degree arc, returning and grazing one of them. It didn’t cause serious damage, but it definitely interrupted their plan.

They looked up — standing nearby were two figures.

It was Akira and Emi.

Akira adjusted his black jacket and observed calmly. “I just came to get a quick look,” he muttered. “Didn’t expect it to turn into this.”

Emi groaned. “I was hoping to shop for tops today. Now everything good will be out of stock.”

Akira turned to the strange attackers and asked directly, “Where are you from?”

One of them replied coldly, “You’re not worthy of knowing that.”

Emi cracked her knuckles. “No problem. We’ll beat it out of your body.”

The attackers smirked.
“Our objective is complete anyway.”

Down on the ground, Kaito slowly regained consciousness. He looked around and noticed a glimmer — the arrow.

With a sharp motion, he stabbed it into the back of the attacker who had pulled it earlier.

“You little—!” the attacker growled.

The other attacker grabbed Kaito by the collar and lifted him up, but Kaito kicked him in the gut.

Seizing the moment, Akira drew his katana and lunged — the attacker blocked it with his hand.

Akira smirked. “Got you.”

Emi fired another arrow — it struck the man’s heart cleanly. He staggered, then blasted Akira and Kaito backward with a surge of force.

“You think this can hurt me?” he growled.

Emi folded her arms. “Before bragging, maybe look at your friend.”

The attacker turned — his ally was on the ground, poisoned.

But instead of panic, he smiled. “Our powers are fading... even our bodies are turning against us.”

On a nearby rooftop stood a tall masked man, his face hidden.

Two portals opened beside the injured figures. The man on the roof watched.

Emi yelled, “Watching from above like a coward? Come down if you’ve got guts!”

The masked figure calmly said, “Now isn’t the time for your deaths.”

Then they vanished into the portals.

Two Minutes Later

A sleek black car arrived. Out stepped Kaien Kenzaki, a towering man, around 7 feet tall, with wild blond wolf-cut hair. He looked impossibly young for someone nearly 30. His dark black glasses covered his eyes entirely, giving him an air of mystery and effortless cool.

He was Akira and Emi’s mentor.

“Good thing my assistant told me you were on a mission,” Kenzaki said. “Without a report.”

An assistant was already tending to a scratch on Akira’s cheek.

Kenzaki faced Emi. “So... want to explain what led to this? And who is this kid?”

Kaito sat up, dazed. “Uh… can someone treat me too?”

Emi replied, “We were about to report. We couldn’t just leave him. I think we need to interrogate him.”

“Interrogate me?!” Kaito said, alarmed.

Kenzaki walked closer, peering behind those stylish glasses.

“What’s your name, kid?”

“Kaito. High school student. Uh… why the sunglasses at night? You can even see with those?”

Kenzaki smirked. “Magic? Tech? Maybe both. I’ll tell you everything...” He tapped Kaito’s chest.

“...after breakfast. With us.”

“Breakfast?! At night?!”

Before Kaito could react, a soft glow pulsed under Kenzaki’s hand.

And Kaito passed out once again.
