The body is built around the soul, each uniquely designed to perfectly fit the individual spirit inside. But there once was a dark and ancient spell known as “bonding”: the combining of two souls into one body. The spell was irreversible and eventually led to the death of both parties. But still, there are many who have bonded throughout history, tragic tales that spill from the drunken lips of tavern-dwellers, and well-versed adventurers.
At the end of the Inferno Wars, the King of Dragons, Razarith, found himself dying beside a young peasant boy. With the last of his powers, the dragon asked the boy to bond with him, and in exchange, they would both escape the clutches of death. The boy, desperate to not yet face his death, agreed, not yet knowing what he was getting himself into. The soul of the Razarith fled into the young boy’s body, leaving behind his empty corpse. The boy rose from the ground, not so much as a wound or scar left upon his skin.
When the soldiers arrived to find that the last of the dragons had been killed, they sang a song of victory. The age of dragons was over. Or so the rest of the world thought. The boy fled his village, hiding his terrible secret for as long as he could. But soon enough rumors began to spread, and the boy became a target of the Inferno Knights, dragon-hunters turned royal soldiers. Under the King’s orders, the Knights hunted the boy, keeping the public quiet about the dragon’s return.
But time began to run out. While the boy was able to avoid the kingsmen, his own body had begun to rot. Though he had managed the momentary escape from death, it now came back for him in the slow decay of his body, and the swelling souls inside.
So the boy and his dragon companion began to search for a way to break free from the spell. In ancient scrolls and hushed rumors, they learned of a rare artifact, The Oracle, which could grant the user their heart’s greatest desire. But even in a land filled with magic and mystery, The Oracle was brushed off as nothing but a legend.
