Slumber was once a safe haven from an overwhelming reality, though now it was a never-ending nightmare. Instead of the fields of flowers and herds of mythological horses, there was only darkness and a voice that lurked within it.
That particular voice desired to steal everything away from her, including the body that had belonged to her since birth.
“You have no use for it,” it would tell her. “All you have done is hide from those pathetic mortals and their words of spite.”
“You’re wrong,” she whispered as she laid on the bare floor, shivering from the cold.
Shuffling could be heard for a moment before silence enveloped the girl. She knew that she was not there, for she was asleep in her reality, possibly tossing and turning as she dealt with this nightmare.
“It’s pointless to continue this charade, darling,” she heard it say as a hand reached out, placing it upon her shoulder. “Either you let go willingly, or I would have to use force.”
“Maybe I should just end it,” she’d say, not shrugging off his touch. “At least I’d have a choice that didn’t terrify me.”
A chuckle echoed through the darkness.
“Perhaps, though where is the fun in that? Would you not want revenge on those that have wronged you?”
She sighed, pulling herself up to a sitting position. The thought of revenge might have crossed her mind several times throughout the years, but she always pushed them to the back of her mind. In her two decades of existence, not once had she acted on anything that could make her life better. She considered their offer, weighing the pros and the cons for several moments.
“What would happen to me then?” she asked.
“You’ll still be alive, just not in your reality,” the voice replied. “Safe from harm.”
“Why should I believe anything you say?”
“You shouldn’t, though have I lied to you?”
The girl sighed, knowing what they were saying was true. It had been months since her first encounter with the entity, and as the nights came and went, she felt herself growing weaker. It had, of course, been patient with her, but she knew that one’s patience can grow thin.
“You haven’t,” she finally said. “And I’m exhausted from having to deal with the quarreling here and the insanity of the outside.”
“Does that mean you’ve made your decision?”
“I have. Please do not cause me to regret the choice to let you take control.”
Another chuckle echoed into the abysmal blackness. It was the last thing she heard before she felt herself being pulled into a dream she hadn’t experienced in years.
The girl opened her eyes, staring up at a white-washed ceiling. A smirk appeared on her otherwise featureless face, the thoughts lurking through her mind dark and horrific. Those that have wronged the poor mortal will get what was coming to them, for they were the reason why she had ended up in a place such as here.
Now she had the will to make the dreams of revenge a reality.
