“Are you finished unpacking?” I heard my mom’s voice from the doorway, startling me at first, but I relaxed back into my bed.
“Yeah” I responded, sitting up and seeing that she had gotten dressed, ready to go out.
That’s right, I needed to be dropped off at my new school and I had been told to finish unpacking before we could go. I just had empty boxes sitting at the corner of my new room, everything was placed out of them, but the size of the room made it look like I had little to nothing. It was weird to say the least, I was so used to living in such a small home, but now my mom was expecting twins and wanted a bigger house.
“Come on, lets go then” Mom said, playfulness in her voice as her keys jingled when she gestured out the door.
I got up quickly and followed Mom down the stairs and out the front door. I called shotgun, even though no one else would be in that seat besides me, but I needed to start practicing if I was going to be having younger siblings, though by the time they’d be able to sit in the front seat I’d already be out of the house.
I heard the engine roar to life, and I watched as Mom drove. She was a peaceful omega, her hair styled in a messy bun, with a smile planted on her face. She was three months pregnant now, but you couldn’t tell. She kept telling me that someday she’d wake up to find a belly bump soon enough, but I didn’t count on it to happen anytime soon. Dad left when he found out she was pregnant again, saying it would be to much to deal with. Can you believe that? He raised me for 16 years but leaves when he finds out Mom’s pregnant with his child. That he made. Pathetic really, though Mom doesn’t like me calling him that. She got right back on her feet only a week after he left, starting out strong and has never been sad since.
I saw the school come into view, beautiful plants were planted around the front of the school, and it look brand new. Once we stopped, Mom urged me out the door and made sure I had everything. She waved goodbye as she drove back off and back onto the road, making a U-turn so that she was heading back home, and I watched as the car disappeared. I was only about 15 minutes early, so I headed to the office.
I opened the door and stepped into the room, instantly smelling the scent of many older omegas. Almost all the desk ladies were omegas, only a few betas, but no Alphas. It seemed weird to me why there wasn’t any Alphas, but it didn’t really bother me too much.
“Travis Morgan” I said, presenting my name as I stood in front of the desk with schedules. I hadn’t gotten mine yesterday, but the school still handed them out before classes started.
The desk lady looked up from her computer and smiled at me, before her face changed to confusion. But as quick as I saw it, it went back to a gentle smile and she got up to go fetch my schedule. I watched as she went over to another lady and they talked for a minute, and she glanced back at him before looking away. The other lady nodded and handed her a paper before leaving down a hallway.
The desk lady came back with the paper and reached out the paper towards me. “Here you go love” She said, and I took it without question.
I walked out as soon as I got it and waited in front of the school as people started to show up. Soon, the bell rang, and everyone made their way inside the school. I followed the crowd through the doors and watched as people started walking in their own direction, giving me enough space to see down the hallway. I looked down at my paper and searched for my first period room number, 204, on the second floor in building one.
I still had ten minutes before the warning bell, so I had enough time to get there. I found the stairs near the bathroom and made my way up. The first door I saw was 216, which meant I had to go down the hallway then figure out where to go from there.
I passed a few lockers as I walked down the hallway, counting down each door as they passed. I ended up in the middle of two different hallways, one was of even room and the other was of odd. I turned into the even one, looking down at my schedule to make sure, then looking back to where I was going. That’s when I saw a figure in front of me, but there was no time to step away.
I was bumped to the ground, my paper slowly falling to the ground as I had let go of it. I looked up and saw another boy rubbing his head. He looked at me as he moved his hand away and didn’t move. I froze up as I felt him stare at me, and I was worried that I may have something on my face. But he soon looked away and got up, reaching a hand out for me. I grabbed my paper quickly and took it, and I was helped up.
“You smell like an omega” He said bluntly, clutching at my hand. He seemed angry for some reason. Why would he be angry that I smelt like an omega? I was an omega.
“Sorry?” I said, tugging at my hand slightly to try and get him to loosen his grip.
“You’re new right? Never seen you before” He said, staring at me, his eyes looking at me as if he was planning my funeral right then and there.
“Yes I am” I said, nervously still trying to move my hand away, but he didn’t even try to let it free.
“Who was it then? Mariah? Ava?” He said, completely throwing me off track.
“What?” I asked, completely unaware of what he was saying.
“Don’t play dumb with me, you smell of an omega, who’d you do it with?” He said in a threating tone as my face heated up.
“I’m sorry, I think you’ve gotten the wrong idea. I’m an omega” I said, trying to stay calm as I spoke. His face looked confused, then surprised, then his features softened all completely and he released my hand.
“Sorry, I thought you were a beta” He said, almost seeming as a whole different person as he nervously smiled at me. He straightened and spoke again, “My name is Callus” he said.
“Travis” I responded, but then the warning bell rang before Callus could say anything else.
He just smiled at me. “I’ll see you around” He said, and I nodded. That was a weird interaction.
He walked off and I quickly walked down the hallway to find my class. Once I had gotten into the room, the tardy bell rang. The teacher got up when I sat down and went to go do attendance. I said here when my name was called, and then class went on after.
I had gone to my second class, and now I had study hall next, room 216, just where the stairs were. I found my way to the room before the warning bell and spotted the guy from earlier. He was reading a textbook, that was probably from his class before, and was writing down notes. There was an empty seat next to him and I urged myself towards it as the bell finally rang.
When I sat down he went to look up at me, and his eyes lit up. “Oh, it’s you! The guy omega” he said, being pretty excited to see me.
‘Guy omega’? That’s a weird way to address me, but whatever.
“What was your first period? How did it go?” He asked, excitement never leaving his voice as he continued to speak to me.
“History, Mr. Boris” I answered, hoping that the bell would ring right about now.
“I have him fourth period, same subject. I just came back from math class with Mrs. Rachels, she’s nice, I think you’d like her” He just seemed to go on and on without a break.
Just in time the bell rang, and Callus stopped talking instantly and turned towards the teacher. She started to take attendance, I say ‘here’ when my name was called, just like I did with my other two classes. Once everyone’s names were called she smiled and got off from her chair.
She wrote her name in big letters on the whiteboard with a pink dry erase marker. She put a little free-handed star next to her name then turned back to the class and introduced herself. She went on to say how everyone was going to get into a group and do icebreakers for the next hour, then the remaining time in class would be spent on work.
I could practically sense it when Callus turned to look at me, but I refused to look back and just stayed focused on the teacher. She continued saying how she was assigning who was with who, and Callus’ eyes were removed from me, but that was until she said she was assigning whoever was sitting closest to one another, and Callus looked straight back at me. We were in a corner, so even if I was sitting with someone else on the other side of me, I was the only one sitting next to Callus so there was no way out.
The people around us started to group up in fours when the teacher was done speaking. I obviously got stuck with Callus and two other girl who sat in front of us. The girl on the right started, asking questions about Callus, and then the other girl on her left. She took one look at me and then looked away in disgust and went to tell the girl next to her to start. And she did, she asked things about Callus and then things about the other girl, seeming to ignore me as well. She asked Callus to ask questions next and he turned straight to me.
“What’s your secondary gender?” He asked me, smiling as he did. I didn’t know why he had asked, he already knew, but I answered anyway.
“Omega” I said simply, and I felt the two girls relax. He must have asked to prove a point cause then the girls barged in to ask me questions now.
They asked how old I was, if I was new, what was my name, and many more. I got a chance to answer them all and they looked pleased with each of my answer, warming up to me more as I talked, and I learned their names. ‘Mariah and Ava’, Callus had mentioned them earlier, so they must have been omegas. They must have thought I was a beta who had just slept with an omega earlier too, so it made sense on why they gave me such disgusted looks. Though I didn’t understand why that was the first thought that came to mind for these people.
It was then my turn to ask questions, so I asked about how the school functioned and if there were any major packs. They said there weren’t which seemed quite weird to not have at least one major pack at a high school, but dynamics must work differently in this town then back at home. I then asked if lunch works differently and from how they explained it, it seemed all the same, though they barely mentioned anything about fights, so I asked that next. They said that since there weren’t really packs, there weren’t really big fights, but they did get occasional fights every now and then.
The half hour had passed by before I knew it, and it felt like I just was filled in two suitcases worth of information. I could barely remember most of it, but remembered what my mind thought would be important, which was their names and secondary gender, and almost to nothing else.
Lunch was soon, so I checked to make sure I brought my food and was pleased to see my bento box still intact. Callus went back to his work and I looked at blank piece of paper for the rest of class, pretending that I was preoccupied by writing random words onto it.
The bell rang and students got up with their stuff, and the teacher happily said goodbye to them as they left but when I was about to leave when she quickly told me to stay. Once everyone else was gone she looked at me with a warming smile as she spoke.
“Your birthdays in two months, am I correct?” She said, looking away momentarily to write something down but returning eye contact when she placed the pencil back on the desk.
“Yes” I said without hesitation, getting the hint of where the conversation was leading to.
“Well, as you know, Omegas do have heat cycles during birthday weeks, so I just wanted to make sure that you had any available suppressants, and if not I can request some for you” She said, never breaking her warm smile towards me.
“I have ones available” I responded, knowing that my mom always had some on her.
“That’s good” She said, writing down a few things again and then turning back to me, “If you ever need some extra ones though, just come to me or the nurse” she reassured, before sending me off to lunch.
By the time I got there, Callus was already sitting down at a table with a few people, talking about something that probably wasn’t that important. Though everyone went silent when I walked over to sit down with them. Everyone looked at me with unreadable expressions and I had a sudden urge to leave, but Callus invited me to sit down next to him before I could walk away.
Once I sat down was when the people started to talk again, not to each other but to me. “Is it true that you’re an omega?” One of them asked, and I looked at them confused and nodded. I heard some of them gasp and whisper to each other before going back to asking me questions. It felt overwhelming to say the least, it was like a celebrity interview with all the news caster trying to ask questions.
Some of the whispers from his table moved to neighboring tables and before I knew it, at least one person from each table was looking at me in amazement, like I was a creation from god himself. Every pair of eyes made my body itch with anxiety, everything just seemed to happen all at once. People were still speaking to me, but then they stopped, and they looked wide eyed at me.
“Travis what are you doing? Stop that” Callus said, shaking me slightly.
“Stop what?” I asked, looking around to see what I was I doing but I was still doing the same thing I had been doing moments before.
“Your releasing stress filled pheromones, you’re going to give people panic attacks” He said, placing his hand over the scent gland on my neck. I flinched at the touch, almost leaning into it, but stopping myself before I could move an inch.
I made sure to calm down and everyone went back to talking, but less to me now. I was glad I wasn’t dragged into anymore questions for the rest of the period, it gave me time to eat my lunch. The bell rang only moments after I finished, and people got up to leave. I had free period for now so I could just stay in the cafeteria, but the lunch ladies were starting to clean up, so I left.
The next thing I needed to do was find my locker.
