By all accounts -financial and otherwise-, Evan was a boring and unattractive man.
He had eyes set so far apart he might as well have been a fish and his nose was so large and imposing that he couldn't help poking it into other people's business.
"I don't think that's how you churn butter, Sasha, " he said to me.
I stayed calm and ignored him.
I was in the churning room just outside my uncle's barn.
Evan and Elsie, my darling cousin, were both seated quite comfortably on a couch, sipping tea and having biscuits.
There was no reason for them to be there watching me churn butter.
Except that it pleased Elsie to show off her fiancé to me.
Not that there was anything impressive about him.
I suspected his parents might have been siblings.
Well. He had inherited their property and their fortune.
So he was a catch.
Apparently.
Elsie batted her big brown eyes at him and tucked a blond lock of hair behind her ear. She swatted at his arm when he said something inane about beetroot and I sighed.
Elsie was pretty. Too pretty for Evan.
Evan turned away from his fiancé and tried again to offer me advise on churning.
"Do you need me to bring you more tea?" I asked him.
He looked at the kettle and noted it was empty. I wiped my hands needlessly on my apron and started to go get the kettle when Elsie jumped up.
Her brown eyes narrowed on me in suspicion.
"I'll go get the tea," she said. "I am his hostess and his fiancée, after all."
I lowered my head because it allowed me to roll my eyes. "Yes. Right."
She seemed pleased at my reaction and said, "Evan has a distant cousin you may be allowed to meet if you behave."
I looked up at her and she added, "After our wedding of course."
Wow. This girl.
Her eyes twinkled and I almost snorted. Elsie's parents were lesser mages. She and her parents couldn't do powerful magic but they could do small things like heating up tea, perfecting makeup and brightening their clothes.
Stuff that was alright for their social climbing purposes.
We were not related by blood as her father was my father's second cousin through marriage or something and that was how I ended up with the Watersons.
My mother had been a succubus and my father was Fae and I had inherited their powerful magic for luring prey and feeding off of other people's emotions and magic.
I was also brilliant with potions because of my sensitivity to the sight, smell and touch of my ingredients and everything I made was pretty darn good, especially my food.
And so the Watersons usually had me doing chores that involved food. It seemed even just touching the food made it better.
It was times like these I wished my father hadn't sent me away.
I couldn't live with Father because Fae didn't take kindly to people who weren't their kind so he'd left me with the 'wonderful Watersons': Elsie, their spoiled only child and her parents - Uncle Geoff and Aunt Daisy.
They made me do chores to 'make me more appealing to potential partners'.
"Get back to churning and do take Evan's advice," Elsie said. "He has many farms and servants and has watched them properly churn butter."
She left then with a smirk tossed over her shoulder.
I went back to the churn and Evan watched me intently.
When I put my hands on the handle, he sighed as if it were so wrong, he couldn't help but be greatly disappointed in me.
I bristled.
"Could you... Show me the proper way?" I asked through gritted teeth.
His eyes were trailing over the bodice that I magically tightened with a wave of my hand. My breasts threatened to pop out and his eyes threatened to do the same.
"I suppose if you need the help..."
He stood and came up to the churner.
I wasn't even using my faerie glamour to make myself prettier but I could feel his lust grow and I could taste it in their air.
It tasted like burnt apple pie.
Disgusting.
But the succubus part of me was hungry.
Every person’s lust tastes different and sometimes if I fed on a couple, I could mix their tastes and make something delicious.
But what could I do with a burnt apple pie?
I let the tendrils of my magic, my succubus magic, sinuously wrap around him.
His eyes glazed over and he stepped closer to me. When he reached out to touch me, I used my glamour.
I didn’t want his hands anywhere near me.
An image of me, the same in every way, took my place.
Evan didn’t notice the real me moving away to stand at the door.
He lifted my mirage’s chin and she smiled slowly. I raised an eyebrow at that when I noticed the tent in his pants grow at that.
I supposed he must have been quite bored with Elsie’s bashful ways. The woman giggled every time he said something and blushed and hid away every time he complimented her.
But Elsie was certainly at the back of his mind now.
He let one finger slide down my mirage’s bodice and popped open the first button there.
I almost whistled at that.
Instead, I took out some raisins I’d stored in a napkin as a snack for later.
My succubus side may feed on lust and emotions but the rest of me needed real sustenance. Now I could feed both.
"You have beautiful eyes," Evan said, not looking at them at all. "Green, like my endless meadows in the spring."
Oh no.
Was he romancing my mirage?
Because if so, my eyes are brown. The bodice was green, so I’ll allow the confusion.
I suppose it was also pretty difficult to wax poetic about brown eyes.
Brown like the bountiful soils on which we grow our corn…
Brown like the muddy plains on which we grow our rice…
Brown like the roasted coffee beans with which we make our coffee…
In all my years, I’d heard the least romantic things said about brown eyes. Most were farm related.
I was always grateful they left out the brown skin.
"And your dark hair, thick and coily like the..."
Both me and the mirage raised our eyebrows at that and waited.
He lowered his voice. “You are beautiful.”
I stifled a laugh at that but it was hard. He was just going to pretend he hadn’t been saying something and I had half a mind to help my mirage remind him.
But she had turned to the churner, removing his hand from her chin. The mirage gave him her back and took the handle in both her hands. Or seemed to. She wasn’t real, after all.
She bent over slightly and his crotch was nestling her ass.
Evan didn't need any extra prodding.
His removed himself from his breeches and lifted her skirts and her leg.
It was somewhat disappointing, if I was being honest.
By that I partly mean his lack of foreplay.
But I mostly mean his size.
I felt bad for Elsie knowing how hard she worked for him when he was an in-and-out man.
It was so bad that I stopped feeding on his burnt apple pie lust and almost covered my eyes in shame.
Almost.
But it was strangely fascinating. Like watching several wagons crash into each other. Still, even morbid fascination lost its spark after some time.
I was about to dispel the glamour when Elsie came back in.
She looked at me and turned a pale face to look at Evan, with his hands gripping my mirage’s breasts and his face contorted into something that would have been funnier if I could see all of it, and then Elsie screamed.
"EVAN!"
It was funny because the glamour around my mirage made her invisible to Elsie, and anyone but me and Evan.
So all Elsie could see was her fiancé having sex with… the air.
Evan turned and his eyes widened-
But he didn't stop thrusting. "Elsie! Wait! I can explain!"
Elsie dropped the teakettle and put a hand to her mouth but she didn't run off in tears, I'll give her that.
I shoved more raisins into my mouth, enjoying the show.
"Evan! Evan, stop that at once!"
Evan’s breath hitched. "I just-"
He let out a loud groaning sound. Like a carriage that had too many packages loaded onto it.
And my mirage straightened up, stepped away and vanished from his sight.
Evan released himself right there, still thrusting and moaning at the loss of his invisible partner. He didn’t seem to realise that the mirage had gone. He shut his eyes and just went with it.
After a few seconds, eyes shut tight, he tucked himself back into his pants. Evan then stood there, doing nothing.
He eventually opened his eyes, looking at the floor and breathed for a moment which seemed to stretch, then he coughed. He walked around the room for a while, nodding at the ceiling like he’d seen something he liked. And then he turned to us and put on the most genuine expression of surprise he could muster.
“Elsie, there you are! You were gone for ages!”
I definitely laughed then.
And Elsie let out a shrill scream.
"DADDYYYYYYYY!"
