March 13, 4793 ( 2 hours before the arrival)
My mom and I were sitting on the couch watching our favorite movie when an emergency broadcast flickered on the tv. We turned to see a slim man with dark grey hair on the television.
“The host has targeted our planet. All members of section 7 please evacuate to the main spaceport. You have two hours to reach this point”. He said it in a tone like he didn't care.
The screen went dark. All I could see was our reflection on the black screen and the horror in her eyes. I turned to face my mom, the look on her face made me want to cry.
“Pack your things”, she said with a distraught look on her face.
I got up so fast I nearly passed out. I ran to my room and pulled out my backpack. Without thinking I grabbed anything I could from my closet not knowing what was happening. Not aware of what I have, I run to my book shelf and grab the most important thing I own. A picture of my dad. As I hold the photo my hands start to shake. They were shaking so much it slipped out from my palms. I saw the photo of my dad slowly drop towards the ground. As soon as it hit the floor, glass shattered across the room like a wave. I could hear my mom yelling my name but I couldn't respond. I finally snapped out of it and picked up the photo. As I picked up the photo I cut my finger on a bit of the broken glass. I shoved the photo into my bag and ran over to my mom. We opened the lobby door and almost got knocked out by a couple who were running to the exit. We ran after them trying not to get run over by the sea of people behind us. We finally found our way outside but things were just as bad out there as they were in here, maybe even worse. As soon as we reach the car we start heading towards the highway that leads us to the main spaceport. We live almost an hour and a half away so we had to hurry. While driving to the main spaceport the car in front of us suddenly stopped and the car door flung open, someone had been thrown out of the car. I could tell my mom was worried but she didn't move. The thought of being left behind made my stomach turn. Once we got within 20 meters of the boarding center, we hopped out of the car and started to run towards it. As we flung open the doors we were scanned by a motion sensored light which read aloud our names.
“Catherine Ruth you have a guaranteed spot on port 17”.
I looked at my mom as she mouthed the words “it's ok”.
“Marlyn Ruth you have no guaranteed spot on this ship, once you have boarded the ship your name will be added to the list”.
I could hear my mom's heart beat.
