"Abbie!! Hurry up! The lecture is starting in 5 minutes!!" I hear someone shout from the doorway. I yawn and grab my phone. The date says: Saturday, May 15th. I groan. Whoever decided to make lectures a thing on the weekend is my offical enemy. "You're up!" the voice says, and jumps into the bed next to me. It's Jackson, my boyfriend. He plants a kiss on my forehead. "Jack! What the fuck! You woke me uppppp!" I say in a 5 year old voice. "Too bad! We decided to sign up for the lecture together, so we're going. Together." he adds. "Not until you give me a good morning kiss." I say grinning. He leans in and kisses me firmly on the lips. "How's that?" he asks laughing. "Doable." I say, and heave myself out of bed. We'll have time for more kissing after the lecture, I'm sure of it. I quickly get dressed and soon we're walking down the hallway, Jackson's arm over my sholder. "Abbie! Jackson!" I turn around at the sound of my name. It's Nikki, my best friend. "Oops, sorry, did I interupt your couple-y time?" she asks, giggling. I turn red. "Not exactly," Jackson says, coming to my rescue. "Well, I'll be on my way." she says, and sprints away. From the distance we hear a teacher shout, "Miss Romero! This is a hallway, not a track field!" Jackson and I burst into laughter. It's mornings like these that make me forget all of the bad things about our relationship. Like, to name one of them, all of the times he's cheated on me and pretended it never happened. But today is a good morning, where it seems like he really loves me.
20 year old enby Abbie Keller is just starting a new chapter of their life. They were kicked out of the house at age 15 when they came out as nonbinary and pansexual, and started living with their best friend, Jackson. Shortly after Abbie moved in, Jackson asked them out. The two have been dating since age 16, but their relationship has been hitting some rough patches lately. They're attending the same college, but Abbie isn't enjoying this college. They want to go to medical school and become a doctor, not study English Arts with their boyfriend. Will Abbie break up with Jackson and achieve her dreams or will Jackson break things off? What caused these two to break up and stop contacting each other? "What Next?" tells the story of how Abbie learns to live without Jackson, and finds new love as well.
