When I first started Johnson and the Monsters, my plans were extremely modest.
I wanted to write porn.
That was basically it. A hot monster detective, a very interested young man, some sexual tension that would eventually stop being tension, and maybe enough plot to give them a reason to be in the same room.
It was supposed to be a one-shot.
Then, unfortunately, I started wondering who these people actually were.
And then I wanted to know what Marcus did when he wasn’t being the object of Evelyn’s increasingly inappropriate thoughts. Then I wanted to know why Evelyn came to work for him in the first place. Then New Vice started acquiring neighborhoods, history, politics, monsters, clubs, government departments, old scandals and people who apparently had lives even when the main characters weren’t looking at them.
At some point the detective cases became actual detective cases.
At some other point Evelyn and Marcus informed me that they were apparently going to have a proper slow-burn romantic arc instead of simply taking their clothes off in a reasonable amount of time.
The porn did not disappear.
It just somehow lost priority to character development.
And now the one-shot has a plot outline for approximately three books.
