Avana is a medication containing the active ingredient avanafil, prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a newer, second-generation phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Its primary distinguishing characteristic is a very rapid onset of action, often taking effect within 15 to 30 minutes after administration. The medication works by selectively blocking the PDE5 enzyme, which enhances the effects of nitric oxide released during sexual stimulation. This leads to increased cGMP levels, promoting smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow to the penis. Due to its high selectivity for the PDE5 enzyme, avanafil may have a lower incidence of certain side effects, such as visual disturbances, compared to older drugs in its class. Common side effects include headache, flushing, and nasal congestion. As with all PDE5 inhibitors, Avana is absolutely contraindicated for use with nitrate medications due to the risk of a severe and dangerous drop in blood pressure. A medical evaluation is required to ensure safe use.
