Sam Bateman was born in Haywards Heath, England, and his family moved to Adelaide, South Australia when he was 2. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and the rest of his childhood and young adulthood was spent trying to navigate the world in his own unique way.
One of his special interests was drawing, and he used it primarily as a medium to express his views on the world better than mere words could. He has written and illustrated a children's book titled Beeing Proud: My Life With Autism, which explains autism in a way both children and adults can understand, from the perspective of a young autistic bee named Bonnie. On this site, he has published his own webcomic, That Kid Maya, a slice-of-life comedy about a young autistic girl's experiences with quirks of everyday life, and is currently working on a graphic novel titled Adele: Preteen Music Wiz, about a young autistic girl pursuing her dream of becoming a professional musician.
