AfroManga is a term used to describe a fundamentally African way of telling stories through comics/manga as sequential artforms.
It combines the global culture of comics and manga with the unique voices of African storytellers. Here, Afromangaka convey intricate story worlds that unpack African culture and identity. In this way, AfroManga helps legitimize the African experience as one worthy of comics and heroes.
To understand AfroManga, one must also understand what it means to be African.
Wits AfroManga is a fourth-year research project created by and for the Wits Digital Arts Department. It is currently the only research project of its kind in the country and consists of both a practical and theoretical component.
