A young woman with blond hair showed me the way to a basement, I was reluctant to leave Mike- he's the only person I know here- but went nonetheless.
She was really petite with long, long hair and bright blue eyes. She took me downstairs to a room with a bar, pool table and a large TV where another girl was waiting with blond hair, this one was pregnant. I tried to smile at her but nothing more than a dazed look could come out. She didn't seem to mind, instead she led me over to the couch and had me sit down.
"Hello, my name is Nova and this is my little sister, Holly. What's you name?"
"Lacey."
"Is there anything I can get you? Water? A blanket?"
"No."
She bit her lip and looked down for a second before speaking again.
"I'm so sorry."
"Why," I looked up at her, not understanding.
"The man who was with you, he's my boyfriend."
I felt a bit sick when she said that, I realized that she was the woman he was talking about when he said he wanted to get his pregnant girlfriend cookies. Nova must have seen it in my face because she didn't continue with the topic.
She tried to talk to me a little bit more but I couldn't get myself to keep up a conversation. Her brown eyes fell sad at my lack of interest and I almost felt bad for it. A small voice inside me told me to try harder and be nicer but I snapped at it to shut up.
Mike's brother came down to get Holly and Nova followed behind. When they were both gone I could feel it break inside me, I was so scared. Tears began streaming down my face and I couldn't stop it. The sound of steps on the stairs made me alert, I looked around and ran over to the grandfather clock to hide behind it.
The person came down the steps and looked around for me, I buried my head in between my knees while the tears came harder. The person came over and knelt next to me, I still didn't look up. Then they surprised me by putting their hand on my head, I let out a sound and jumped back slightly.
It was Mike.
"What's wrong?"
"What's wrong," I wanted to laugh at the question but the strength wasn't with me," You came into my shop this morning and the next thing I know someone is trying to bite me like some kind of-"
I couldn't get myself to say it out loud for fear of sounding more insane than I felt. My fingers dragged through my hair as if to relieve some of the pressure I felt on my mind. What's wrong with me?
"Vampire," my head snapped up as he said the words I'd been thinking," But he's not, he's only half vampire."
"Half vampire? Oh god, what's happening to me?"
"I know this is all crazy and I don't want you to have to be in this. I'll only tell you what you want to know."
I could feel his hands taking mine but I couldn't bring myself to look at him just yet.
"I don't want to know any of this," I took a breath to prepare myself before meeting his deep eyes," What are you?"
"I am a werewolf and one day I will be Alpha."
"What am I to you," I asked him, scared he would confirm the things everyone had told me," Why am I here?"
"You are my mate."
I took in a deeper breath and let it out more as a shaky laugh. I'm hallucinating. I couldn't take the small amount of space between us so I stood up and walked out into the middle of the room.
"Mate? Like- like an animal? Are you an animal??"
"I'm a werewolf."
"But that doesn't make any sense."
"I know you've heard of them, but in real life we aren't like that. The only difference between you and I is that I have a slightly altered DNA. I'm closer to the more animal and predatory side."
"So- so, what? Will you turn into a big, hairy man-beast? Is that it?"
"No, I turn into a full wolf. No different from the animals you see on Animal Planet."
"Ok, ok. You said you were an Alpha?"
"No, I will be. Right now my father is the Alpha."
"Alpha of what?"
"Alpha of the Jade Forest pack."
I thought a minute, the Jade Forest is the woods that surrounds the town. They live in the woods. Right next to us.
"Your," I stopped and gulped," Your pack, is it big? There must be others in it."
"It's one of the largest packs in the world. It covers Alaska through Canada until the American border and across to Nova Scotia."
"That's big..."
"Yes. Listen, I have to go and take care of somethings. The people that brought you here want to hurt all of us. If this plan works then I'll see you later and I can explain more then."
"If it doesn't?"
"If it doesn't then you'll never have to worry about werewolves ever again. We'll all be dead."
___
Mike and just about everyone left the house when the sun went down, leaving me in a room upstairs with about half a dozen middle aged to elderly women watching over me. They're called Lunas. I recognized one as the Mike's mother.
"Catherine," I called from the room. I was standing near the window, trying to see the fight but it was futile. I couldn't see a damned thing.
She came in almost immediately, after about half an hour I realized that I didn't have to yell for any of them, they would hear me if I just said it.
"What's the matter, dear?"
"How much longer? They've been gone for hours."
"It could be much longer."
"I don't know how much more of this waiting I can take. Mike said they might die."
"They might."
She gave me a weak smile before walking out, promising to bring up something to eat. When she didn't bring it up in an hour I went down to check on them. The house was empty. When I went outside to see if they were out there I saw a wolf.
I screamed and turned to run back in the house before I realized that it was probably one of the werewolves that Mike told me about. I went out to see it again. It hadn't moved. She started walking towards the forest.
I followed her.
