I was watching Sora with a bright smile as he offered me the chance to walk through his fields with him as he didn't have much work to do and we could just admire his crops as only the day before I didn't have the chance to spend time with him because he had to work.
He was swinging his arms around wildly as he pointed from plot to plot, while telling me what was grown there and explaining to me when it would be harvested. I was both fascinated with the fact that Sora knew so much about crops and that as he and I where walking he looked so much like a kid being taken to the park. Either way I was glad to be with him.
Sora was the best part of my day. To be honest, school wasn't my favorite place to be because along with dealing with teasing, I had to be dodging Jake and making up excuses to why I had to leave tennis practice early.
"Fumiko" He said pointing over to a bed of greens while smiling happily. "I planted these three months ago and they'll be harvested last."
"After that," I said crouching with my hands on my knees from the sun. It might not have been as hot as the day before but at the moment it felt as if the sun was drumming on my head. "After you've finished harvesting everything, what will you do?"
Sora scratched his head as if contemplating for a minute. "Well, first I'll have to inspect the crops and pick out the best ones for selling, then I'll have to deliver them down town and after that I suppose I will have to make preparations for the next planting season."
"But Sora," I said standing up again and looking around, "All of your crops look great! How can you say you're going to pick the best ones for selling when they're all fantastic!"
"Yeah, I suppose." He replied, sounding not totally convinced.
All his crops looked so great they could have been perfect! That's when I recalled what Mrs. Saito said and realised why he might have felt that way.
I suppose all those years of his father telling him he couldn't do anything must have made him unable to see the true beauty of his hard work without first finding faults.
"Sora" I said softly to him unsure of what else I should say.
"Fumiko, let's get out of the sun. we can get a little shade from the trees over there." He said with a hand over his forehead.
As he held my hand and pulled me towards a cluster of trees I couldn't help but smile at Sora. "I thought that the 'sky' loved the sun?" I chuckled lightly.
"I suppose, but I love another." I thought I heard him whisper back.
While Sora and I leaned against the tree I couldn't help but rest my head on his shoulder. The gentleness of the breeze against my skin made me generally come to admire the beauty of the greenery around me. Before me was a field with patches of crops scattered everywhere. It was kind of amazing to imagine that Sora did all of that. Just at the edge of the fields, trees covered the remaining landscape that was mostly hills and slopes but overall it was very beautiful.
"Fumiko, there's something I want to show you."
"What is it?" I asked a little surprised but before I knew it, Sora was pulling my hand.
As he pulled me along, I became captivated by the huge trees that were scattered along the landscape. They had outstretching arms of green that added to the floor of leaves that we walked along. After a few minutes Sora and I came to a stop in front of a tall tree. I was curious as to why but he said nothing and only placed a hand on it before smiling.
"My father and I planted this tree years ago when I was still very young." Hearing Sora speak about his father surprised me, so I remained silent and decided to just listen. "I know you might be wondering why we would plant a tree in a place that's already filled with them."
I nodded my head as I began feeling curious.
"I found this tree growing by my house one day but it was dried up and dying. I watered it everyday but nothing ever really happened." He paused for a moment and stared up at the towering limbs above him that light cascaded over and down to us. "My father found out about what I was doing and -"
"And what?" I asked fearing the worst.
"And he helped me to replant it out here. He said it wasn't getting enough sunlight where it was growing and right here would be the perfect spot."
As he spoke I couldn't help but give him a confused look. I knew from both what Mrs. Saito had told me and the pain in his eyes that his father had mistreated him but the light look on his face and the pride in his voice betrayed it.
"Fumiko, the reason I'm telling you this is because on that day I discovered my love for farming and in that I became the person I am today. Fumiko, I want you to know that this is who I really am."
"I know" I smiled as I gave him a warm hug. "I never wanted anything more from you."
"What was that?" Sora suddenly said as I realized that his mind had drifted away and only now he was taking in my words.
"Oh, it's nothing." I said pulling back from him.
As he held my hand and we continued walking I pulled away from him as I wasn't ready to go back and I wanted to see more of this wooden wonderland.
"Fumiko" he called after me, "where are you going?"
"Nowhere really, I just want to see this place a little more."
"But Fumiko wait. You need to be careful." Sora warned.
"Of what? You don't need to worry, I'm not afraid of being scratched by thrones or prickles." I laughed as I moved further away from him.
"That's not what I'm trying to say."
"I told you I'll be fine....Ahh!" I screamed as I fell off the edge of a slope that was concealed by the thick shrubbery behind me. My eyes widened in terror as I realised that I was falling and the only thing I could do was scream.
"SORA!!!" I cried as I hit the side of the slope with a loud thud and began rolling downwards. I frantically tried to grasp on to anything that was near me but the terror I felt in my chest made it impossible. Tears stung the corners of my eyes as the bushes scratched against my skin like barb wire as I kept failing.
I'm was going to die.
"FUMIKO!" I heard Sora cry before I caught a glimpse of him skidding down the slope after me.
Before I knew it I had come to a stop with a hard bang to the head. I was on my back in a mound of grass between two rocks, my feet still high in the air. As I squeezed my tightly shut eyes open, I began to scan the area I had fallen from. When I tried to get up my arms hurt and I wouldn't budge. I was lodged between the two rocks and unable to move.
I'm definitely going to die!
I thought just before I heard Sora call out to me.
"Fumiko where are you! Are you okay!?" his voice was laced with concern and care.
"I think so, but I can't move." I called back. "I need help."
Soon enough I saw Sora rushing towards my direction before stopping suddenly.
"What are you waiting for? Help me up!"
Still he didn't move.
"What's wrong?"
I gasped as I realized why he had stopped. Both my legs were up in the air and parted revealing my bright pink underwear clearly to him.
"Oh my god!" When I looked back at Sora his cheeks were a burning colour of pink. "Don't look!" I shouted at him.
"I won't" He called back before putting his hands over his eyes.
"Um, now see if you can pull me up." He then slowly walked over to me while still covering his eyes.
"Sora, how are you going to pull me up if you're using your hands to cover your eyes?"
"Oh, um...sorry" he then moved his hands from his face while bending over to pull me up.
As he pulled on my arms trying to get me free, I couldn't help but stare at his blushing face. He looked so cute with his rosy cheeks and his eyes shut tightly, even though I knew I shouldn't have been thinking that at the moment. I knew the reason why he was having a hard time pulling me up was because his eyes were shut.
"Sora, I think - " before I could say a word, Sora yanked at my arms again but this time he lost his balance and fell between my legs. I gasped in shock at him being on top of me. His face was so close to mine as I could feel the warmth of his breath and his chest was pushing against mine as my legs wrapped around his waist and I could feel his...
"Sora!"
"I'm sorry" he said as he opened his eyes and stared into mine. A moment seemed to pass us by as we stared at each other silently. I thought it was going to last forever but it didn't. I soon felt Sora's strong arms wrap themselves around me and he thrusted us upwards and out from between the rocks. While he did all this, I couldn't stop staring into his eyes. That was when I realized that my legs were still wrapped around his waist and he was still holding me close to him. There then came a sudden strong wind that descended down the slope and unto us. As I watched the breeze play with his hair and blow mine about my heart began racing and that was when I knew I wanted him to be mine forever.
