“Sorry-” I punched him again.
“Okay I get it-” I slapped him one last time and got up.
“Are you done now?” I brushed myself off.
“Yes, next time I’ll throw you out a window…” I spoke up sternly.
“Please tell me your being figurative.” He begged.
“Please tell me you won’t kiss me again…” I glared at him.
“Yeah but you were being figurative though, right?” He smiled.
“If that’s what helps you sleep at night.” I smirked as I started to walk home.
When we got back it was mostly tears and awkward silence before we went to bed. A few hours into the night Lucas woke me up and asked me if I would ever change my hair to a different color because of one of my birth defects, first I asked if I can actually do that then I said no, go away I’m tired and I went back to bed. The next morning I walked downstairs and everyone was in a rush. So obviously I asked
“Why are you in such a hurry?” And waited three minutes for a response.
“Christmas break is over early, so Lucas is going back to school!” His mom chattered as she frantically made breakfast.
“Can I go?” I asked sitting down shoveling french toast in my mouth.
It was silent.
“Well I’m not sure if that would work out-” Lucas’ mom stopped in her tracks smiling in an odd way.
“Why not?” I stopped scarfing down food for a brief minute.
“Yeah, they wouldn’t notice…” Lucas intervened.
“Lucas!” His mom gasped drying off a cup.
“Seriously! If she doesn’t prove her intelligence then she won’t go.” Lucas’ face lit up determined to let me go.
“Lucas Walker!” His dad put his newspaper down.
“Please!” I begged.
Lucas’ parents looked at each other and exchanged some glances.
“Fine, but only one shot.” His dad sternly regarded Lucas.
I hopped up and down, I showered then changed. I ran downstairs in my Frank Sinatra shirt and jeans with my hair brushed. My first day of school, how amazing is that! I reviewed my clothing and body. We soon arrived at school, it was small and damp. I took a glimpse of the inside when a tall, large boy towered above me, smiling in a menacing manner.
“Hey peacock hair, where’d you come from?” He shoved me aside.
“I’m sorry I don't speak to rats.” I hissed at him.
“What’s with the hair?” He yanked it towards him.
I pushed him on the the ground and placed my foot on his chest.
“I said I don’t speak to rats.” I walked away catching glares from other children there. I glared back and them and would reveal my teeth to them with another hiss. Before class started I sat down next to Lucas as the teacher prepared. I looked around, seeing all the books and numbers somehow excited me.
“Welcome class, we are continuing yesterday's lesson with algebra and advanced literature.” The teacher sat at her desk pulling books out from her desk.
A few girls passed out papers, books, and pencils. I stared down at the equation in front of me.
“This is a simple question, 2x+3=x+7 over 3, we will go over once everyone is done, we have not learned about this kind of problem so I am just testing how close you get to the answer, you may began.” She started walking around the room.
I began writing as quickly as possible, I never learned much math or english in Germany, I only went to school a few times. I placed my pencil down, nervous.
“Okay, it seems everyone is done, I will view your papers and see if any are correct.” The lady smiled, I soon realized her name on the chalkboard was Mrs. Perkins.
I was the last one she came to, all the children’s answers were incorrect, except mine. Somehow.
“Oh, this is correct, brilliant. What a clever girl, are you new to class?” Mrs. Perkins viewed down towards me.
“Um, y-yes” I muttered quietly.
“Well, you are very intelligent. Where are you from?” I caught a fearful glance from Lucas, I realized I shouldn’t tell her from the way that Lucas’ family members responded, but I was pressured.
“I am from Germany…” I huddled my face towards desk.
The class gasped as the people around me scooted away, the teacher was trying not to look frightened, but that didn’t work out.
“That, that is a long way, heh.” She smiled in a stressful manner.
"Hör auf zu versuchen, mir zu gefallen, Schwein…(Stop trying to please me, pig…)” I mumbled, scowling at her.
“Excuse me?” She questioned.
“Nothing...” I whispered.
The woman walked away with a suspicious glare on her face. I caught the eye of multiple other students. Once the last bell of the day rung I went to walk out the door when I caught attention of a few boys.
“Hey peacock head!” One of the boys shouted.
“You are a smart mouth aren’t you?” He questioned me towering above.
“Your a dipstick aren't you?” I smiled at him ominously.
Another boy pulled out his english book and smacked me with it as I toppled to the ground.
“You’re a fighter aren’t you?” The other boy smacked me with the book again.
I stumbled to my feet but fell once more. Then, I was pissed off. I kicked him from on the ground an he fell, I kept throwing punches while getting smacked with books from other kids. I got to my feet and screamed when two boys moved out of the way, resulting me in punching one of the girls.
“ARE YOU INSANE!” She screamed at me.
“Move.” I pushed her out of the way and continued and eventually ended up outside.
“Get some sleep peacock hair…” A girl laughed.
“Dipstick...” I whispered under my breath.
I ran ahead of Lucas back to the house. All I could think off was those pretty girls, they’re so much prettier than me, I thought, I looked at myself in the mirror at home, my short hair was a mess and so was everything else.
“How was school?” Lucas’ mom smiled towards me.
“I supposedly answered an impossible algebra question, and I got beat up…” I started making my way down the stairs.
“Oh, do-” I interrupted Lucas’ dad.
“I’m fine, I’m going back, bash those sluts senseless…” I sat down on the last step.
“SABENE! WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!” Lucas’ mother struck me lightly on my face, scowling.
Lucas chuckled in the background with his dad. His mother returned a menacing glare.
“Why don’t we go shopping and fix up your haircut?” She asked.
I nodded in approval. We went to the same mall as before and picked out some clothes. I got a bag full and we went on our way.
The next morning I pulled on an oversized kind of sweatshirt and poorly cut the bottom to my fitting. I put my hair up in a bun and put on some jeans and some shoes. I quickly paced downstairs eager for food. Once I arrived at the bottom and walked into the kitchen, Lucas was scarving his food down like an animal when the doorbell rang. Lucas gave me a signal to hide behind the staircase for many reasons. I carefully peered open as Lucas’ mom opened the door.
“Hello, I’m officer David from the NYPD, I have come to the awareness that an unregistered minor is in your house?” Lucas gave me his signal by tapping his chair. I silently skidded up the stairs more.
“I don’t know of anyone besides my two boys and my husband in this house?” She laughed in a stressful manor.
